Then who will return our kickoffs? The only thing RWM does is return punts, and he really isn't that good at it. He's far from great.

Welker isn't going anywhere. RWM or not.

I hope not. All I am sayin is that I am not to sure Saban is gunna want to keep a guy that just returns kicks when RWM is atleast a solid return guy (maybe not great) but he is fast. And, IF (and a big IF) Chris Atkins is healthy, he is also a good ST guy which might make it hard to justify a roster spot for just a return guy. I am all for keepin Welker, hes the best we have had in a long time, but Im not so sure Saban will see it that way.

Our wide reciever corps makes my nipples hard.

Yeah Baby Yeah, they make me very horny too baby! No No I meant the Dolphins receivers. No No, I dont mean the actual receivers, just the thought of the balls being shagged downfield baby. Oh I dont know what I meant, and I'm spent!

Wr#1: Chris Chambers (Hoping for a breakout year from my man Chambers  )

Wr#2: Marty Booker (Former Pro-Bowler and is a very very productive reciever)

Wr#3: David Boston (Wow, when David Boston is your 3rd WR, you have to have an awsome WR corpse.)

Wr#4: Derrius Thompson (Could be a productive 3rd WR in almost any NFL roster)

Wr#5: Josh Davis (Should have been a 2nd or 3rd round pick eaisly, did you look at his Marshall stats? Umm, yea we got a gem IMO w/ this kid, please put him in, I want to see what he can do.)

Wr#6: Welker (Cmon, he has to be our return man, last year when everything was looking down Welker stepped it up and gave us good field possession on almost every return, and gave me at least, someting to look forward to when the other team was punting.)

Yup. I would like to see 5 WR's in our lineup, but since Wes Weslker is our Return Specialist, I feel it would be wise to have 6 WR's (also we shouldn't be counting and depending on Boston to hold up all year.) Between the three fighting it out, Gilmore, Newson, and David... I'm thinking it'll be Gilmore unless Josh Davis really shows us something special.

WR #1:Chris Chambers
WR #2:Marty Booker
WR #3: David Boston
WR #4: Derrius Thompson
WR #5:Bryan Gilmore
WR #6: Wes Welker

That would be pretty damn good!
That is my WR depth chart... exactly.

Welker is more of a KR than a WR. Chambers, Booker, Boston, Thompson and Gilmore make for a very decent WR unit.

Well, how can you guys keep putting Thompson in the top 5 ? The guy has done nothing (save for one catch against the Pats last year) to warrant any praise from us...He is very inconsistent. His years at Wash were more productive than he has been here, and he's had more opportunity to establish himself as a good WR. He just hasn't done it...time to move on and see who else is out there...

Gilmore has potential but is injury prone. Thompson is mediocre to poor. Boston could be great, but will he stay injury free ?? Booker is solid and should do much better with Linehan's scheme, provided the OL gives the QBs time to make the throws. Chambers, while we all have expected him to breakout, hasn't done it/had the opportunity to do it yet. He is good to very good, but still hasn't shown it all yet. We are rather long on potential and short on results from this group of WRs.

I say our group, overall is mediocre at best...pending Chambers breaking out and Boston actually playing in a game for us.

He'll probably keep four tight ends, but only two fullbacks...so six wideouts would be o.k. if two of them can contribute on special teams.

There is a lot of talk about Josh Davis...people seem to think he's great...the guy wasn't even drafted...there has to be something there. I would like to see him do well, but, don't think he will beat out Gilmore.

Josh Davis is a great receiver. I have watched him every year here at Marshall and the guy doesnt have the amazing speed but he makes plays and gets open, he has a knack at creating seperation. I feel he will have no problem making the roster.

If we go after McQuarters though, Welker will definatly be cut... and we definatly wont be holding on to 6 WRs... but, if we dont, it is really interesting thought. I LOVE Welker, do not get me wrong in anyway, I would be upset, but I just really think we are gunna go after McQuarters. He isnt a stud, but he is solid and fast. However, the main reason I think Saban will want him is for his versitility with the ability to play CB and Saftey (EDIT: Also a great return specialist!). We would probably use him at Saftey this season.

My question to you is: Why would we only keep five receivers on the 53 man roster? We have Linehan as our offensive coordinator now, and he uses a lot of 4 WR sets.

IMO, keeping only 5 WRs on the 53 man roster will spread us out real thin in that position, one injury to that postion would crippled us. We have to keep 6 WRs on the 53 man roster.

Chris Chambers
Marty Booker
David Boston
Derrius Thompson
Brian Gilmore or Josh Davis or Kendall Newsom
Wes Welker

Now some people mention signing R.W. McQuarters, so if we sign McQuarters (McQuarters can play S or CB and is a good return guy)

So if we signed McQuarters (I don't know if we're looking at him, I'm just throwing that out there because I think we need a versatile player who can play safety and CB) then it will make things interesting (maybe scary for some others in this forum), becasue Wes Welker's job could be in jeopardy. I love Welker as our punt return guy, but if we sign McQuarters and he takes the return job from Welker; than I would keep Gilmore and Davis or Newsom over Welker becasue they are better receivers.

Chris Chambers
Marty Booker
David Boston
Derrius Thompson
Brian Gilmore
Josh Davis or Kendall Newsom

Yeah, key point is depth, that's what N England has had. There's no way all our starting WR's will stay healthy all year, just doesn't happen. The way I think of it is the top 5 WR's Chambers => Gilmore + we have a dedicated ST players in Welker. Problem solved?

To anyone who thinks we should get rid of Wes Welker... First of all, I'm interested in bring R.W. McQuarters for an interview with us, but I don't care if he can return punts.. Wes Welker is our guy. He's the best return specialist we've had for the longest time I could remember. He's our guy, I highly doubt that we'll get rid of him unless he has a disappointing season.

Okay check this out. If we end up only being able to keep 5 WR's on the roster for game day then when we go into a 5 WR set then I would expect to see something like this:
WR1: Chris Chambers
WR2: Marty Booker
WR3: David Boston
WR4: Derrius Thompson
WR5: Ronnie Brown

Thats a better 5 WR set then anyone here has posted. Ronnie can catch like a receiver and he would create a HUGE mismatch for any team if he lines up as a WR. It's not like he'll be tired from take 40 runs a game. Name 1 dime back in the league that would be able to cover him. If we end up keeping 6 Wr's on the roster then I'd expect it to be Gilmore unless he is beat out by someone like Josh Davis or Kendall Newson.

good point nando... if we were to have a crisis we could always put ronnie out there.

Ronnie could be the NFL's Reggie Bush in terms of ability at RB and WR.

The battle at WR in camp will be intense! Chambers and Booker are the only "locks" I can see. Boston must prove he can stay both healthy and clean. If so he is a big time talent and makes a three receiver set very exciting. Can you picture a slot CB trying to cover any of those three??????

Thompson and Gilnmore have to prove himself to THIS coaching staff. Thompson was a Wanny FA and Gilmore was a Sullivan project. Do they stay under the new regime? Or will training camp bring about a purge?

Welker is exciting as a return specialist. He was the NCAA leader if memory serves. But he lacks the size that Linehan has seemed to like among his WR's. Sign another RS and suddenly Welker could become a one-season wonder.

Davis had a draftable grade by most "experts". Why then wasn't he picked? Inquiring minds, etc................ Could he stick? Sure, he may become to Linehan what Gilmore was to Sullivan

But lets all remember that paper depth in May, means very little compared to real depth in December. Yet, I like what I see so far. Good job, front office!
