To anyone who thinks we should get rid of Wes Welker... First of all, I'm interested in bring R.W. McQuarters for an interview with us, but I don't care if he can return punts.. Wes Welker is our guy. He's the best return specialist we've had for the longest time I could remember. He's our guy, I highly doubt that we'll get rid of him unless he has a disappointing season.
Hmmm....

I duno.

Saban may think that a KR/PR is a waste of a roster spot if the guy cannot contribute elsewhere.

In NE... Brown and Johnson are both WRs that see playing time and contribute on O.

In Miami, Saban may be happier with a guy like McQuarters because he can contribute on D.

Okay check this out. If we end up only being able to keep 5 WR's on the roster for game day then when we go into a 5 WR set then I would expect to see something like this:
WR1: Chris Chambers
WR2: Marty Booker
WR3: David Boston
WR4: Derrius Thompson
WR5: Ronnie Brown

Thats a better 5 WR set then anyone here has posted. Ronnie can catch like a receiver and he would create a HUGE mismatch for any team if he lines up as a WR. It's not like he'll be tired from take 40 runs a game. Name 1 dime back in the league that would be able to cover him. If we end up keeping 6 Wr's on the roster then I'd expect it to be Gilmore unless he is beat out by someone like Josh Davis or Kendall Newson.

I have thought of that possiblility before I made my first post, but opted against it becasue the 5th and 6th WR spot should be for WRs who are on the brink of becoming future #2 and #3 WRs. The only way they can become that is from playing experience. Putting Ronnie Brown as our #5 WR would be an awesome weapon to use, but at the same time it will stunt the development of our younger WRs too. I'm sure there will be some packages where Ronnie Brown will split out as the H-back but we have to give our #5 WR a chance to development as well.

Salary cap is a factor here. If Gilmore and Davis are good enough, why not cut Derrius Thompson? DT has not shown us that much. Also, any hitch in Boston's gate and he might be shown the door as well if the new guys are that good.

Is Derrius Thompson that much better than any of the younger guys that he's worth the salary AND a roster spot? I mean, wouldn't carrying an extra position in the defensive backfield make more sense? Have an extra safty, one more guy gets a chance to step it up and become a playmaker.

Waste of a roster spot lol! Welker is the best returner that we have had in years if not decades. Add to that he can kick too lol!

He'll probably keep four tight ends, but only two fullbacks...so six wideouts would be o.k. if two of them can contribute on special teams.

Think we keep 6 WR & 4 TE, but not 2 FB. Only 1 FB on roster and a backup FB on practice squad (Moa?). If something happens to FB during game, we go with 2 TE and/or have a TE used as an emergency FB. If the FB gets banged up and must be inactive for a week, activate FB from roster to practice squad and try to rotate someone from roster to practice squad.

No one is interested in cutting WW... I just question whether Saban will keep him if we have other guys who can return as well as play either offense or defense

Nasty

Hey benchfiedler, you should caption your picture with "What the ............were you thinking AJ"!

guys it may very well be that we keep welker, gillmore, davis, booker, boston and chambers and move one guy to the practice squad and still cut dt. THE thing to keep in mind as someone else said is injuries and i know rw mcqaurters can return punts and is a good s/cb as well he will make big plays.

IMO its gonna be:

WR 1: Chambers
WR 2:Booker
WR 3: Boston
WR 4 Thomson
WR 5 Davis
WR 6 Welker - although he is there for returning punts and kicks.

6 wr's in this order

1. Chambers
2. Booker
3. Boston
4. Thompson
5. Gilmore
6. Welker
