Y-do some teams know how to rebuild and we cant?

Here is the problem with the Dolphins as I see it, based on 35 years of watching this team.

We have only had about 6-7 losing seasons in the 40 years we have been a team....we are never horrible, with maybe the exception of the 4-12 we just had....but we we never seem to be better than about 10-6.....we just seem average every year.

I think Saban needs to upgrade the team in many areas, get younger, stronger tougher players, a better o-line, new kicker, younger players on D...we never are lousy enough to have to blow it up and start over like the Raiders, 49ers, Lions, but we just can't seem to get into the elite team level that can compete for a SB.

I'm not sure if this franchise has ever made the decision to completely re-build. At least as long as I've been a fan, we've never made a legit effort to do so...

We've constantly been living in the "we'll be there next year" theory. Therefore, the focus is always based on moving forward with what we have, instead of starting over fresh. That's my take on the whole thing....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

:dj2:

I've been spinning this tune for a while...

and, as I said a few times before, this isn't "done" until Taylor and Thomas are gone.

But, everyone wants to hang onto them just like we did Dan. Sure, an argument can be made on JT's play.... but please stop with the ZT tackle stats, people...

JT and ZT represent the Jimmy Johnson era. As long as these faces remain.... NOTHING's changed.

In regards to the "Saints" re-building. First of all, it's not a rebuild. What are they "rebuilding" from? Complete failure?

In order to rebuild, you must first build something worthy of respect from accomplishment.

Was Jimmy rebuilding from the Dan Marino Super Bowl years?

Was Wannstedt rebuilding from the Jimmy Johnson Super Bowl years?

Is Saban rebuilding from the Wannstedt Super Bowl years?

NO. And quite honestly, it was never the Miami Dolphins when Dan Marino was here. It was the Dan Marino Dolphins.

We are BUILDING. It's pure and simple. And, it needs to be done from SCRATCH to be done right.

New Orleans has made great decisions. But, more importantly, they have a group of guys who buy into the philosophy. And, have the complete support of the city. It's not a city or fan base in disarray or clamoring about being in the Super Bowl. They're happy to be winning. They are rallying behind their coach and players. They don't flip/flop each week between their coaches be "god" one week and needing to be fired the next.

Think about it, they allowed their best offensive talent WALK. LeCharles Bentley was allowed to walk away. A Pro Bowl Center. In a year in which they acquire a new franchise QB and have a top pick in the draft (which became Reggie Bush). They allowed the anchor of their offensive line WALK. Who's his replacement? Can you name him?

Then how is their offense doing so well without him? It's a team game is why. And they GET IT.

Colston?

Yea, one of those "lucky" picks in the 7th, right? Maybe, but, they did their homework, took a chance and then give him a chance. After TC, they felt so good about their choice, they traded Stallworth for a need position, MLB.

You don't hear their players complaining. You don't hear their fans whining and moaning about a "Perfect Season" or being "Super Bowl" bound every year. Everyone's just glad to have a football team that gives it everything every game.

Maybe instead of believing we are owed Super Bowls, we should look at these other teams that do it right and figure out what they are doing that we aren't.

Then, sit back and realize... Rome WASN'T BUILT in a day.

The problem with Miami is not necassarily that they CAN'T rebuild. IT's that they haven't tried. It seems every year we try to plug holes and re-tool. Seems every coach thinks we're a few players away. It seems that way at times to me too. But I guess someone needs to realize that the team will need to be gutted. Eventually, even our better team components will start to break down. At this point, it will be sooner rather than later.

very well said, and this has been my thoughts all along . :tantrum:

Year after year this eats at my brain. Why can other sucky teams put together great drafts and talent and put together a respectable product on the field and we just cant do it. This is a serious musing. How long must we suffer as fans? For God's sake the New Orleans Saints can do it!

It's been 2 years man!
Did you really expect Saban's crew to be able to fill all the holes we had on this roster that quick?

You only get so many draft picks and FA acquisitions come with salary cap ramifications. It takes time espcially the way the former regime wasted draft picks.

LT...your a sensible guy. And a Chargers fan. You also spend a good bit of time on these boards. You are the best chance we have to get a completely ubiased opinion.

That said....what are your opinions of our team...our strengths..weakness..and our coaching. IYO is Saban the man for the job?

Thanks in advance for your response!!!!

Sure ---> Let me put on my GM cap for a second here--let's see where is that thing..oh here it is...ok. Here's my thoughts on the Fins.

1. FIND AN IDENTITY: Are you a running team or a passing team? Pick one and run with it. Once you've chosen what you want to be, BUILD around that. Personally, if I were GM, I would build this team as a RUN FIRST offense. Give Ronnie Brown the ball 20-30 times a game. **POUND THE GROUND TO OPEN THE AIR).

2. FIND A QB: Way too early to determine what and how DC will recover from his surgery. I for one have never been a big fan of Culpepper b/c in my opinion, he lacks the short and intermediate passes a good QB must have. I know some of his stats might be misleading this category but in reality, from the games Ive watched, he misses way to many short passes. His number was padded in Minn. due to Carter, Moss, and a very good supporting cast. On top of that, the injury he sustained "might" never allow him to return to his normal self that could get away and shed LB's the same size as he is.
IMHO- with DC, it's more the passing I'm concerned with rather than his movability.

3. Rebuild the line: Sorry folks, but Damion McIntosh is not the answer. He's horrible and when you guys first got him, I told you guys to watch for his false starts and his turnstile hands.

4. STOP GOING AFTER OTHER TEAM's "rejects" and build from within and build through the draft. The days of paying for high priced free agents is not the way to go. Keep the core young players, lock them down to multi years and watch them develop.

5. I like Kevin Carter as compliment to JT, but it would be nice to give JT some help from either an attacking LB or an attacking DE (a la Merriman and Castillo or SHaun Phillips). The run defense is stout and is solid..a good DT/NT would help your team SO MUCH.

6. Find a "ball hawk" safety. A safety that's in position just looking to bat the ball down. I havent seen that many games this year but the games I did see, the CB's were getting beat up top rather than the slants/comebackers/hitches. When CB's are consistently getting beat up top, it's safe to say the safety has a responsibility to know where he needs to be.

7. Depending on draft position - TRADE DOWN FOR MULTIPLES and rebuild the line. Fonoti is a waste of time (fodder) for this year.

8. Welker wil lcontinue to stay at the slot /#3 receiver.

9. THe problem of the team is on the offensive side. The defense can get better...I would also look to bring in another WR to compliment CC. I can honestly say, I think CC is in the top 5 WR in the NFL. However, when the opposing team solely focuses on him (once the run has been stopped) well that's problems. Booker IMHO is ok but does not warrant any double teams and any NFL team with a pretty good CB will be willing to cover Marty Booker one on one which allows a "rover" player to take away McMike and or the back.

10. Saban is not the problem. The players need to execute and stop dropping balls, making mental errors, etc...

Rebuilding starts with the Qb and we haven't drafted one (backup garbage in the sixth round does not count) since Marino in 1983. It's like we're afraid to draft because it will take too long for a QB to be effective. But look at all the years we wasted on Fiedler, Lucas, you know the list. DC is still the best hope we've had at the position. I'm just praying that he can bounce back next year or it will be more years wasted!

Just say NO to Quinn and or Brohm.

Doesn't necessarily mean them. I'm just saying over the years we have passed on a lot of oppurtunities to draft a new QB. It wasn't like we got burned the last time we did it! Does anyone remember the success of Marino?

I like Brohm. I compare him to Cutler. On a lesser known team where he has to do more. Draft him and groom him to become the starter. In the mean time go with DC or JH, who knows one of them may become a long time starter.

Good drafting and coaching are the key in the age of free agency. Get the type of YOUNG players that fit your system and coach them. Players need to know what is expected, if they don't perform find someone else.

By the way that was Don Shula's adage. You performed or he found someone else.

It's very simple. I can sum it up in one word. Coaching.. Our coaching staff is underachieving.

It's taken the Saints what, 30 years to rebuild, I'm not sure I'd use them as a great example

I have to completely agree with those who've said we've never TRIED to rebuild. We SHOULD have. Several times, starting in 1996, again in 1999, 2003 and this year, we should have dropped our high priced players, built up draft picks and started the long, painful process. Instead, we've put it off and became mired in mediocrity.
Then when we DID hit the skids and went 4-12 and Saban came on board, I was optimistic we would finally rebuild. But nuh-uh. Saban has fallen into the trap of "just a few players away." He brought in overpriced and undertalented free agents, and traded for a couple of QBs---one an injured likely has-been and one a never-was. This will get us nothing but more seasons out of the playoffs and without a high draft pick. We NEEDED to trade the older, talented defensive players, build up draft picks and go through the 3-season-minimum it will take us to rebuild to a good team.
When will we do it? God knows.

I get the sense that this isn't the best draft for QB. None of these guys has proven anything like the big 3 from last year, and none of them, save Quinn, has anything approaching an NFL pedigree. I think there'll be some gold to be found on day 2, but other than the top 5, this draft is seriously devoid of impact players.
