I just went back to take a look at the first rd of the 2011 draft. Pouncey is better than any other player taken after him in that round, although you can make a case for Kerrigan and Jimmy Smith.

I'd rather have A.J. Green or Julio Jones. Do you see any of those type of players in the WR group? Those type of players are routinely drafted in the top 10, whereas top centers usually aren't drafted that high. That's one of the reasons I didn't have a problem with the Dion Jordan pick. That body type and those physical attributes are a rarity and come at a premium.

I would have preferred a competent GM who could find a good center in later rounds, leaving flexibility to try and trade up for Julio Jones.

Miami could have tried to trade up for either Julio or A.J. As great as Pouncey is, I would take any of them over Pouncey. The thing we don't know is if they did try. Maybe Ireland tried to trade up and couldn't so that's left open to speculation. What we do know though is Ireland had a track record for favoring the "cornfed" players. The one aggressive move he made in the draft for an offensive skill player was Daniel Thomas. Yeah, that Daniel Thomas.

You do realize that we finished with a better record than Atlanta last season, right?

In hindsight trading up and giving what they gave up for that WR has cost them much more than he was worth.

They are not a better TEAM now, just the opposite in fact.
 
OP, you do have a case. Not only were people not wanting us to draft an OL man early. Many on here had felt that you do not have to have a good OL. They were screaming oh look at Green Bay and ohh look at Pittsburg their OL sucks. They were screaming oh we should of not draft Jake Long and gotten Matt Ryan because OL is not important. Matt Ryan would of been a bust with the OL we were going to have without Jake Long. I am still amazed that Tannehill was as effective as he was with a bad OL.

Right on. The board as a whole totally deserves to be called out on this.
 
I've always been on the Jake Long > Melted Ice side.. Still think some our better teams were when we ran a lot via our smash mouth offense. Wore teams down with big backs and huge cornfed. Just never had that Qb.. Now we do.

I was never a fan of slinging the football 50x a game.. Those teams/players may have all the stats, but they don't win championships...

2 things to win a Superbowl, run the ball and stop the opposing offense.
 
I think the OP's statement is correct that there were some FH posters who took the position that we should never waste a 1st round pick on a "cornfed", not that our needs didn't require it in a particular year.

Personally, I think OL play is second only to QB play in establishing the foundation of success on offense, and virtually all teams that have achieved sustained success have had a top quality OL (we had one of the best ever in the 70's), so I'm all in favor of using a 1st round pick on a talented OL guy in any year.
