You know what makes an RPO Offense better?

Typically, all the linemen are run blocking regardless of the QBs read, therefore a pass has to be executed almost immediately. There is no time for letting a route develop, or going through progressions.
If this means dink-and-dunk short passes and no 30, 40, or 50 yard vertical passing game, then I think it's garbage!

You can, but its really hard at the NFL level.

Your line basically has to run block and doesn't have eyes in the back of their head. Therefore they will continue run blocking if the QB decides to throw.

What makes throwing deep so hard in the RPO is that your offensive line, by virtue of run blocking, will almost always have an illegal man down field if the ball isn't thrown immediately. In college the OL can move farther downfield on a pass so its less of an issue.

That or you just accept no push in the run game.

Exactly why it can't be a main feature of an NFL offensive system.

The ppl that are argueing for an RPO based offense because "that is Tua's strength", have only superficial knowledge of what that means in reality.

All i want is good pass protection for this kid. Enough so to allow alot more opportunities downfield like the completion to Waddle.

RPO belongs in the trash bin, its a gimmick offense that works in college NFL defensive coordinators have already figured it out.

Look at the teams that used in the past and their production drop off this year....KC anyone?

The Chiefs primary problem this season is IMO the OL

KC is not exclusively an RPO team.

Andy Reid played and started coaching at Byu.. He runs a Wide open WCO like Byu did back in the day (McMahon, Young, Detmer, Sarkisian).

AR ran the aforementioned w/ McNabb & Alex Smith

Only recently has he added RPO & Air Raid elements due to Mahomes

p.s. Mike Leach (an Air Raid proponent) played at Byu about the same tme as Reid. He is part of the LaVell Edwards coaching tree as is Brian Billick.

Tua isn't fast or durable enough for that college offense to work at this level so the whole idea that we're missing out by not running it is a non sequitur IMO. His NFL career will hopefully be in the pocket.

The vertical passing game that was the Raiders and Chargers (1970's & 1980's) was a fad too

Even, the Martz led Rams w/ their intermediate passing game (Based on Don Coryell's scheme) was a trend as well

It's the "R" Sure anybody can deploy an RPO offense but it's the "R" that is the most important thing. "Look at me I'm running an RPO"

Oh but that takes an offensive line and talented RBs. Miami is 30 of 32 teams in yards per rush attempt. Baker Mayfield QBs the team with the number one stat on yard per rush attempt. He frankly blows. Look at today.

To be clear, I am not sold on Tua. I didn't want to draft him because of his injury profile. But if you love him or hate him you need to acknowledge that he runs the RPO extremely well. I would LOVE to see how he does behind a solid O line with a real RB behind it. Najee, Chubb, Elliott, Cook, Kamara and so on.

1000% correct, REID is a WCO coach that has added the RPO nonsense in due to the talent of Mahomes, and look what has happened. They stopped attacking the defenses and starting allowing defenses to dictate to them what was going to happen. Blitzing or shooting gaps on the WCO generally didn't work out well for defenses.

It used to be defensive players didn't know who was going to block them on a play, now with the spread everything they know and DL attacks the OL and play shoot the gap.

Get away from this RPO and attack a defense methodically the way OC's in the past would do, not hoping for busted coverage or a broken tackle to make your offense. Run the ball, drive block, not this silly RPO angle block on every play. Once defensive players stated being punished they slow down, they are more careful and this allows additional time for your QB and alot less shoot the gap crap from the defense.

Unless the defense parts like the Reed Sea, I really don't want Tua running.
Agree. I have noticed a few times when I think there was chunk yardage available if he took off and ran.

But, he needs to be smart about it.

RPO is fine as a "piece" of an offense, but that can't be the base at the NFL level.

Sure, you can break off a decent gain occasionally but it is always, by virtue of the rulebook, going to be a smaller gain expectation from the playcaller.

Many ppl throw around the term without an understanding of the actual Xs & Os concept, or they confuse it with the read option.
Wow Uriah Heep, haven't seen that in a long time

No need to delete that brother. we don't mind the odd, friendly OT post. It's when a thread drifts seriously far from the OP that it becomes an issue.

The idea that NFL d coordinators have Andy Reid’s offence ‘figured out’ is hilarious. Dude has been eating d coordinators lunches for two decades.

Good teams go through slumps — it happens.

RPOs have a place in the offense but it is generally far less effective in the NFL where the OL can't go downfield as far and defenses are better.

Now, if you have far superior talent offensively....
