When you hear of great NFL players who have become great NFL coaches, the guys name who I think of is Zach Thomas. I dont know if Zach ever has thought about coaching after his career ended, but his work ethic and knowledge of the game is amazing. Future hall of fame QB Peyten Manning called him the smartest player he has ever played against. Just a thought , but seems like a no brainer to reach out to Zach for any type of defensive coach position you may have available. Even if just starting at a linebacker coach position!!!
 
Being a smart player doesn't always mean you're going to be a good coach. Just like being a good defensive or offensive coordinator doesn't mean you will be a good head coach. Peyton Manning is a very smart player but even he says he would not make a good head coach.

You can say that about every first time coach that's how they get there start Philbin has never been a HC we are taking a shot in the dark with him
 
I'm sure if ZT wanted to he could serve an internship and get on in coaching.

Question is if a guy that had made all the money he made would want to be paid peanuts
to grind and grind and grind and grind.

I don't see the motivation for him to do it.
 
Last I heard, he was thoroughly enjoying time with his family. Don't think he would be interested in coaching at this time in his life.

Have to take it with a grain of salt since it's from Omar Kelly, but about a month or so ago I posted a link to Omar Kelly's twitter feed where he said Zach told him he was ready to get into scouting. Maybe Zach saw what Elway is doing with Denver and decided he'd like to be a GM someday instead of going the coaching route.

Anyways, I'd let Zach have a crack at scouting/coaching if I were the dolphins. He gave his heart and soul for the dolphins every week and the least we could do is give him an opportunity.

With his understanding of offenses, and his work ethic to watch countless hours of film on opponents, he is a natural to be a coach someday.
 
IIRC, Zach is an assistant coach for one of the local high schools here in the Dallas area.

He is indeed the type of guy that could either:

Stick around a small school and help kids understand the game

OR, transfer what he knows probably first to the College ranks, and then someday into he pros.

And if he did, what would be the drawback of letting him scout players? Irleand for all of his faults is a pretty decent judge of talent, so if he didn't agree with Zach then he could just not draft the players Zach reccommended. There is nothing but upside for letting Thomas work for us.
 
I agree scouting ... Is the way to go ... Then go from there. It would be hella nice if he can find some late round talent like himself
 
I would take Zach any day of the week. I miss watching him play. He was so fast and hit people hard.
He laid the wood and always competed. 1 of my all time Dolphins Fav.
