Alex Boone would be interested in playing for Miami Dolphins

Boone was only coached by Foerster in '15 and it was nothing impressive. (bottom 10)

Mike Solari (Giants) and Tim Drevno (who is now at Michigan w/ Harbaugh) were the OL coaches during the years ('11-'12) when the 49ers had a dominant line.
Oh, well the article quoted earlier said Foerster coached him in twice, 2009 and 2015. I don't remember exactly how good he was in 2009, but for a while there that SF line was incredible.

He was cut in '09 and spent the entire year on the 49ers practice squad.

Then in '10 he was inactive for 15 games and played only in the finale.

Is a regressed Boone better than any guard on our roster ?

Tony Sparano was with Boone in San Fran (granted as a TE coach) and just last year in Minnesota. I also think Sparano is a better OL coach than Foerster and he couldn't convert him to a ZBS, so there's that as well.

LOL. There's nothing to disagree about. He doesn't fit our ZBS.

I know nothing about the technical Xs and Os aspect of football. That said, here's what I don't understand:

Miami had a better o-line before Philbin came along and wanted to go with his Zone Blocking Scheme. Ever since then, the line's performance has been pathetic. Even though I'm an ignorant fool, it sure seems to me that maybe Miami should go back to the old style of o-line play! I want to see a huge wall of old-school, nasty road-graders that open holes for the RBs and protect the QB. Isn't that the job of the o-line? Philbin's o-line couldn't get the job done; Gase's first job should have been to get a whole new o-line.

Breaking News: Aging veteran FA lobbies for job.

I think, all too often people recognize a name and associate it with a reputation that was earned by solid play when the player was in his prime. I admit, sometimes it's enticing when you see some of these names available. However, these players get cut for a reason and usually it's because there has been a decline. In a handful of cases it's to unload a salary cap hit when there is a young player waiting in the wings.
Every FO has a scouting department that scours the waiver/cut list for guys that can upgrade the roster.

Some reactions from a Vikings board. Generally the consensus is "good riddance" and "big mouth/lockerroom issues" but there are a few who take a more neutral or positive POV towards Boone.

Having read other team's forums for years, I've come to realize that as with FH, there's most always conflicting opinions, but that the overall consensus is usually the correct one. So I'd personally pass on this option.

Pretty honest evaluation. Boone has played stiff and rigid since his arrival. Gets worked in pass protection and had limited footwork to drive lineman off the ball during running plays. I suspect the Vikings will be looking for a veteran or to add from another team's cut persona

[The dead money is unfortunate. However, he failed to impress at guard. He is someone who should have been that veteran leader on the O line. I did not feel he took on that role, and his performance on the field was lacking. He just was nowhere near the Boone I thought the Vikings were getting./QUOTE]

Good he sucked. Now start Hill over Remmers and the line can be average.

surprised we couldn't get anything for him, not even a seventh rounder we lost on the cornerback. Maybe we did have someone interested but needed him to take a pay cut. Which he did not approve. One can only guess what really happened behind closed doors. I'm guessing a lot of cussing, yelling, and screaming. Let's see if Boone talks? (probably will)! BTW, glad he's gone, all talk...

with the injuries this oline has had the past two years this is a bad move. Sorry, dont care how much cap space is freed up. He is at least an average guard and we are 2 injuries from being a train wreck. This does not inspire confidence in my team.

As for Boone, I've been screaming on this board for Zim to bench him as the line almost always functions better and plays with more heart when he's out.

Hard to believe that no one has mentioned this yet but the guy had become a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. Funny how right away some people have to start pushing their narrative that this is a Spielman failure. Try to remember that Boone was brought in for a different offensive coordinator and a different offensive scheme. The type or running plays that fit the offense as designed by Norv Turner to suit Adrian Peterson's style is not the same as designed by Shurmer to fit the backs we have now. Apples and Oranges. Alex Boone does not really fit what we are doing now...plus he always seems to be banged up and his play has dropped off some. What we are doing now in the run game does not fit a guy who is a bit of a plodding mauler and lacks agility and the ability to get out front and lead on screen plays and such.

No question in my mind that there is more to this than field performance. To eat that kind of cap money there has to be some sort of locker room issue. Something like this will definitely make a statement.

The NFL, also being a product of the college, as a whole has transitioned to the ZBS, Every single team runs it to some extent. Some more than others but it's a very popular league wide.

It can't hurt, as we are desperate at LG. If Forrester wants him again that is a good sign. We really need to bring In someone.

There definitely is the opportunity to run a power scheme now because, as SoS said, nearly everyone in the NFL runs some variety of the ZBS. That's what Harbaugh was doing in San Francisco to so much success, running power schemes against defenses designed for zone schemes. He added a fullback and often used extra OL as "TE's" to bulldoze those undersized LB's and DT's, and then by the 4th quarter they were so worn out from the physicality of it all, that the defenses just wilted.

As they overcompensated by putting more men in the box, that opened them up for the deep shots down field. That's precisely why Harbaugh wanted Kaepernick, because he had an absolute cannon for an arm and plenty of willingness to fling it downfield against that 1v1 coverage. If it broke down, he was a big strong runner who could salvage the play by running for yards. Alex Smith was reticent to throw deep, so Harbaugh got impatient and replaced him, just so he could facilitate his running game with the threat of the deep pass to keep the safeties honest.

It worked, look at the LB's these days, most are garbage. Why? Because they're being asked to do so many things it's nearly impossible to be good at all of them. Whatever your weakness, the offense will isolate and exploit the mismatch. Today guys like Ryan Shazier are all the rage ... basically fast safeties playing LB, because they have the speed to blitz and cover. Most offenses use the short pass as their bread and butter today, so a LB who can't cover (like ours!) is going to be exploited a lot ... and I mean a LOT. But, those guys fast and quick enough to cover slot receivers and big enough to cover TE's are rare. Those guys tend to be used as pass rushers if they're over 6'2 and coverage DB's if they're under 6'2. Those great athletes aren't being funneled to LB anymore, because no matter how good they are, they're going to be exploited by something.

But almost all of the OL's either run a full ZBS scheme or some kind or a mixture of both zone and power concepts with a heavy emphasis on zone. Defenses have been losing to it, so all of the NFL has migrated to it. Remember when Shanahan used to make every RB look like a HoF'er? That was because of those zone schemes. It worked so well, everyone adopted it. Just like everyone adopted the West Coast Offense or at least heavily incorporated it's concepts into their offenses. The ZBS is a perfect fit for the West Coast Offense systems.

Boone represents a power guy in a time when there aren't many power schemes being run. While he's not the player he used to be, he's also not surrounded by other dominating power guys who block out the sun and wear down the defense. Still, I'd like to see what he's got left in the tank. We're not looking for the old Boone, we couldn't afford him. But we are looking for a serviceable OL.

If he's cheap, I wouldn't mind the depth. He probably will be. My biggest concern is he is a bit of a head case from what I gather.

I don't know the details behind Boone getting cut in Minnesota, whether it was performance based or to save money. I know the Vikings made a lot of changes on their offensive line this offseason.

Boone was a quality player for the 49ers a couple of years back.

They transitioned to a ZBS to fit the talents of Dalvin Cook. Just like we run a ZBS for Ajayi.

49ers were a power running team which fits Boone's skill set.
