Lets ask Boomer and CK!!

Whats with all the love for John Beck all of a sudden? I understand this QB class is pretty weak after Quinn and Russell, but this is getting ridiculous. Two months ago the buzz was all about Stanton, then it was Edwards and now all of a sudden John Beck and Kevin Kolb are being made out to be franchise saviors by some people on here (not necessarily directed at you or anything). Edwards, Beck and Kolb seemed like second day picks when the season ended, now people are talking late first/early second rounds...None of them lit up the combine, so I'm just kind of curious as to how they've risen this far.

My admiration for Beck came about by hearing of him from Boomer and then checking out his highlights on the web. So my own viewing history of him is weak and limited, but he just jumped out at me from what I saw. Strong arm, really quick, good at moving around the pocket and scrambling, he seems to be clutch kind of guy, too. That's the best that I've got- I saw him, and I just had that kind of "wow" response. I've read up on the guy, and with the major negative seeming to be that he's 26, I'd be really happy if we got him in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

whoa....Boomer u seem really high on Doug Free, why is that??

and do u SERIOUSLY think Ben Grubbs will be there at #40??? cuz i highly doubt it. altho i do think Quinn, Grubbs, Free, Rice will give us a top 10 offense in a few years.

For Boomer, there's nothing "sudden" about his love for John Beck. He first turned me on to Beck and Rowe back in like, October. I investigated and liked Beck a lot more than Rowe, though both looked good.

Beck what I like about him is he's got plenty of savvy w/ regard to pocket presence and movement skills, and a very very quick release...but most importantly he just finds the most appropriate way to get the ball into his receivers' hands. He varies his delivery and ball speed according to the situation. This is something I think that Jon Gruden would naturally be attracted to because it was something that Rich Gannon did extraordinarily well in Gruden's offense.

He's extremely accurate, is capable throwing on a rope like few other quarterbacks in this draft (probably coming in third to Russell and Korrodi in this regard) and yet his best passes have been touch passes. Statistically the season he had this year was extremely impressive from a passing quality standpoint...and that has nothing to do with gaudy TD stats but rather his accuracy % and his YPA numbers...INT% number good too.

Speaking to the original poster, the ideal draft for Miami involves getting Brady Quinn but it is uncertain what we'd have to do to get him. So I've kind of been considering ideal Quinn drafts, and ideal non-Quinn drafts.

I think one ideal draft I've been considering involves Joe Staley at the top at #9.

It would probably look something like:

#009: LT Joe Staley, Central Michigan
#040: DE Tim Crowder, Texas
#060: QB John Beck, BYU
#071: OC Samson Satele, Hawaii
#108: NT Paul Soliai

From there, in the 6th and 7th rounds you'd be targeting to get a return specialist (I like Tim Mixon, the corner from Cal, and Legedu Naanee from Boise State), another OL (Kyle Cook, Adam Koets, Dane Uperesa, etc), another DE/OLB type (Xzavie Jackson, Brian Smith, etc), and a punter (Sepulveda probably gone, looking at Podlesh or the kid from Miami).

Now, on the other hand, Miami's sniffing the crap out of Ted Ginn Jr. and he represents probably the most serious non-Quinn possibility in this draft at the #9 spot.

If that happens, they'd have to get their OT later...and my suggestion is Doug Free at #60 or #71. That could even bump John Beck up to #40.

YES, Big Sam is in on this one..

After seeing Beck against my Lobos on a couple of occasions, I will add this.
He wasnt the guy that the defense would spend a week preparing for... that being said, he did have very good field presence (Reminds me of Brady, and how it pi$$ed me off cause just when you thought he was gonna get sacked, he would hit the open guy-that is he has a good head about how much time he has in the pocket). He is also a very good game manager, and once again would ruin us with his time keeping skills and savy entering the line of scrimmage

Now then CK, just add Quincy Black to that list of yours and we could seriously see eye-to-eye on a very good draft
PS: Couldnt we really trade down 4 or 5 spots and still pick up Staley?

Do the 2 of you like Beck more than Kolb, or do you prefer Stanton (question his football IQ?) ?

Damn CK, you make me feel a lot better now that I've seen one of your mock's. I've been working on a mock thats very similar to that one.

Round: 1, Pick: 9 (9th Overall) Miami - Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan
Round: 2, Pick: 8 (40th Overall) Miami - Tim Crowder, DE/OLB, Texas
Round: 2, Pick: 28 (60th Overall) Miami - Kevin Kolb, QB, Houston
Round: 3, Pick: 7 (71st Overall) Miami - Andy Alleman, OG, Akron
Round: 4, Pick: 9 (108th Overall) Miami - Paul Soliai, DT, Utah
Round: 6, Pick: 7 (181st Overall) Miami - Kenny Scott, CB, Georgia Tech
Round: 6, Pick: 25 (199th Overall) Miami - David Ball, WR, New Hampshire
Round: 7, Pick: 9 (219th Overall) Miami - Kyle Cook, OG, Michigan State
Round: 7, Pick: 25 (225th Overall) Miami - Brannon Condren, S, Troy
Round: 7, Pick: 38 (238th Overall) Miami - Xzavie Jackson, DE, Missouri

I have a question for you though, although I love Soliai in the 4th, I've heard his stock is somewhere around the 2/3rd round right now so it would take a lot of luck on our behalf for him to drop. My question is, have you heard or seen Miami express a lot of interest in Soliai or is that just a player your extremely high on? I know the Dolphins have been looking at Utah players, but I think the guy they've been looking at is Kelly Talavou in hope of landing him in the later rounds.

The punter from Miami is Brian Monroe, one of my good friends from childhood...is he supposed to get drafted?

Boomer, you are very respected, and if there are so called Boomer haters, then that is their loss, and ignorance. Always great to hear your thoughts, it is very apparent that you do your homework inside and out. Thanks again

Cheers Tay.

You would take Stanton over Beck? I'm a little surprised at that. I like the Alleman and Free picks- I'd much rather have Free at #71 than Staley at #9- and I'd be very happy with Rice at #60.

Ginn
Beck
Rice
Free
Alleman

If Alleman fell a little that would be great. He probably won't, though. Maybe Beekman or another good OG/C will.

Not necessarily, I'm more confused than Rufus Wainwright.

;)

Because there's a lot more to Beck and Kolb than a Combine workout. That said, Beck especially had a very good Combine. This is a good year for QB's.

Christoph,

It's more about getting value for each pick. If I go Quinn or Ginn in R1, then I'm not sure I see LT value at 40 or 60 that I do at 71 with Free.

You get me?

Do I think Grubbs will be there? No. But I was asked for my dream scenario. ;)

I think Arron Sears might be there. MIGHT

Boomer, I have a question about Kolb. Most Qbs who come from shotgun offenses struggle in the NFL under center. Why shouldn't teams be worried that Kolb would flop under center like those that have preceded him?

Do the 2 of you like Beck more than Kolb, or do you prefer Stanton (question his football IQ?) ?

That's so tough. They all, I think, have starting ability in the NFL. What bothers me with Stanton is that he's probably TOO intelligent. He's a very, very bright kid. But that works against him, because he's over analytical to the point of distraction. He takes a bad play with him into the next one and so on and so forth. But he's also shown the first round grade throughout his career.

Beck I can't help but like. In my post 2006 draft thread in VIP last year, I highlighted Beck and Rowe as 2 QB's to watch. John had an excellent season and I've said it a million times, he reminds me of Rich Gannon with a much better arm.

Kolb is an interesting guy. He has that sort of lazy delivery, that quirkiness to his motion, but he's very effective, very accurate and both he and Beck especially are Cameron's kind of passers.

So who do I prefer?

Colt Brennan.

;)
