NFL reportedly tinkering with onside kicks, considering bold rules to make kickoffs 'exciting again'

Highlights:

'
According to Pelissero, teams would only be able to attempt an onside kick if they're trailing in the fourth quarter, and they would have to let the other team know they're doing it in advance.'

....

'Setup zone: The kick and return teams would line up on the receiving teamā€™s 40- and 35-yard lines, respectively, and not leave until the ball is touched or reaches the ā€œtarget zoneā€ (20-yard line to goal line).

Touchbacks: If the ball is kicked into the end zone, the receiving team gets it at the 35. If the ball is kicked into the target zone and rolls into the end zone, the receiving team gets it at the 20.'

Like the second part. Don't like the first part.

So the ST coach tells his kicker, 'kick it high and try to drop it at the 10.' Who cares about injuries?

I hate, hate, hate the on-side kick proposal. While those kick attempts rarely affect a game, itā€™s a piece of strategy that teams must account for.

Remember Sean Payton having the balls to open the 3rd qtr with an on-sides kick vs the Colts in the SB? New Orleans almost certainly loses that game if that play doesnā€™t happen. It should remain an element of surprise for coaches.

Honestly, if theyā€™re going to adopt that rule, Iā€™d rather just see the play outlawed all together and replaced with teams having a choice to retain the ball after scoring by attempting a 4th and 10 or 15 from their own 25-30 yard line.

The NFL would be incredibly stupid to take away these options for teams trailing in the 4th qtr. IMO it would kill a lot of the intrigue and suspense associated with big comebacks.

Just go watch clips of this in the XFL. It's backyard football style nonsense. Devin Hester would have returned 100 TDs against this single line circus.

Would be shocked to see this get 24 votes.
Right?! My first thought when watching this was ā€œOMG, Miami could have a field day putting Tyreke back there to return kicks under this new rule!ā€.

Seriously, Miami should be praying this rule change gets made. Between Tyreke, Achane, Mostert, and Waddle, Miami is already loaded up to take advantage of a rule change like this one. Miami could conceivably take advantage of this more so than any other team in the league.

Yeah you're not wrong. Achane could really crush it with that style KO

I'd just go with a 4th and 15 option if the NFL is that dead set on making a change to kickoffs. Teams made 4 & 15 at around a 13% clip last year.

Here's you onside kick % rates over the last decade.

  • 2022 regular season: 3-of-56 attempts recovered (5.3%)
  • 2021 regular season: 9-of-56 attempts recovered (16.1%)
  • 2020 regular season: 3-of-67 attempts recovered (4.4%)
  • 2019 regular season: 8-of-62 attempts recovered (12.9%)
  • 2018 regular season: 4-of-52 attempts recovered (7.7%)
  • 2017 regular season: 12-of-56 attempts recovered (21.4%)
  • 2016 regular season: 7-of-63 attempts recovered (11.1%)
  • 2015 regular season: 10-of-67 attempts recovered (14.9%)
  • 2014 regular season: 6-of-58 attempts recovered (10.3%)
  • 2013 regular season: 11-of-61 attempts recovered (18.0%)

I agree with the 4th and 15 approach. Would certainly make games more interesting.

Thanks for posting those stats.
