Possible new Kickoff and Onside rules (Crossman pay attention!šŸ˜‚)

Why make the change to the on-side kick? This play doesn't allow the players to get to the momentum generated in a downfield kick (which is what causes injuries) and is an element of the game that keeps things interesting. Why limit it to Q4 and why announce it is coming? I really don't see the logic here.....

I think they should make it so the receiving team has to wear blindfolds. That would level things out a bit

Yeah that one is coming out of nowhere, we've all heard complaints about kickoffs but I never heard anyone complain about onside kicks.

The NFL has stupidly tried to kill kickoff TD's for years and has all but succeeded. Now they want to make the game even worse. Simply a terrible idea. They would be better off giving teams 3 points for a kickoff that goes through the uprights. So many things already make football so much worse than just 5 years ago. Doing this would be behind stupid.

Doin way too much with these silly ideas. Just stop messing with it you get 50 million viewers a game relax already
Just get rid of kickoffs entirely. Home team decides if they want the ball first or not to start the game, no coin toss or kickoff. Instead of onside kick, just have them convert a 4th and 20 from their own 20. If they convert they get to keep the ball wherever they converted if not then the receiving team takes over wherever they got the stop at.

McAfee did a good demo of how this will work for the Kickoffs and it sounds really great. It adds an actual football play, no more just touch back and out to the 25

I hate, hate, hate the on-side kick proposal. While those kick attempts rarely affect a game, itā€™s a piece of strategy that teams must account for.

Remember Sean Payton having the balls to open the 3rd qtr with an on-sides kick vs the Colts in the SB? New Orleans almost certainly loses that game if that play doesnā€™t happen. It should remain an element of surprise for coaches.

Honestly, if theyā€™re going to adopt that rule, Iā€™d rather just see the play outlawed all together and replaced with teams having a choice to retain the ball after scoring by attempting a 4th and 10 or 15 from their own 25-30 yard line.

The NFL would be incredibly stupid to take away these options for teams trailing in the 4th qtr. IMO it would kill a lot of the intrigue and suspense associated with big comebacks.
Exactly. The NFL should come up with something better that maintains the element of surprise.

You guys should have an open mind and see how the play actually works in live action.

This could end up being a very entertaining addition to the game.

I hate touchbacks and loved Devin Hester and Dante Hall, I hope this brings back Return specialists as a bigger part of the game again.

I would love to see that too.

I don't know why no one can kick the ball right for the onside kick. The ball only needs to travel 10 yards and then it's fair game, whoever gets it. Just kick the damn ball straight up in the air so our guys have time to be down field 10+ yards and then it's just a jump ball for everyone. Think of it as a lob wedge for golfers. That's the issue with onside kicks, the team trying to get the ball never get there fast enough and they are essentially hoping for a botched catch/drop by the other team to even have a chance. Why has no one figured this out? I don't care if it requires a different kicker/punter someone in professional sports should be able to do this.

NFL reportedly tinkering with onside kicks, considering bold rules to make kickoffs 'exciting again'

Highlights:

'
According to Pelissero, teams would only be able to attempt an onside kick if they're trailing in the fourth quarter, and they would have to let the other team know they're doing it in advance.'

....

'Setup zone: The kick and return teams would line up on the receiving teamā€™s 40- and 35-yard lines, respectively, and not leave until the ball is touched or reaches the ā€œtarget zoneā€ (20-yard line to goal line).

Touchbacks: If the ball is kicked into the end zone, the receiving team gets it at the 35. If the ball is kicked into the target zone and rolls into the end zone, the receiving team gets it at the 20.'

The onside kick is becoming the old extra point. Outcome is known before the play. Somehow get the OSK to a 25-33% success rate and ALLOW surprise OSKs
