Spurs vs. Blazers

Without one of their key players to start the season, the San Antonio Spurs weren’t happy with their performance in their opener, starting 0-1 for the first time under coach Gregg Popovich.

Still, they’re feeling much better than the Portland Trail Blazers.

As prized 2007 top pick Greg Oden recovers from another injury, the Blazers will look to rebound from a lopsided loss to start the season Friday night in their home opener against the Spurs, who’ve beaten them 12 straight times.

Portland (0-1) had high hopes for 2008-09 after the young Blazers managed to finish .500 last season even with Oden out for all 82 games following microfracture knee surgery.

But Oden’s long-awaited debut didn’t last long on Tuesday night, as he played only 13 minutes, did not score a point and sprained his foot in a 96-76 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Anyways back after a short hiatus.

Damn, TP went for 55 tonight in double OT.Keeps proving haters wrong.I know people will say "Spurs needed double OT to beat a mediocre T-Wolves team",but I don't care this team needed a victory and got it.

They lead the league in steals per game and forcing turnovers. Both of their opponents at home have shot less than 39 percent from the field.

No, it's not the usually defensive-minded San Antonio Spurs, it's the Miami Heat.

On Friday, the Heat look for their first road victory of the season and first win in San Antonio in nearly 12 years.

Miami improved to 2-0 at home on Wednesday with a 106-83 victory over Philadelphia. The Heat, who had 12 of their season-high 18 steals in the first half, were led by rookie Mario Chalmers' franchise-record nine steals.

"Anytime we get a steal and a fast break, it's going to be an easy layup," said Chalmers, who leads the NBA with 3.8 steals per game.

Miami (2-2) had a 21-8 advantage in fast-break points, and a 32-10 edge in points off turnovers.

Good to see with all the injuries and things going on, that Pop and Timmy can at this point still have a sense of humor....Timmy said one thing that struck a cord.Even if Manu and Tony were healthy, the Spurs just aren't playing the kind of defense we're used to seeing.

Already without one of their top players, the San Antonio Spurs opened the season with their worst start in 35 years. Snapping out of their early funk could be a challenge with another one of their All-Stars sidelined.

After learning point guard Tony Parker would miss about four weeks with a sprained ankle, the short-handed Spurs hope to find some answers on Tuesday night when they host the surprising New York Knicks.

San Antonio entered the season knowing Manu Ginobili would miss the first several weeks following offseason ankle surgery. The Spurs didn't know, however, that the absence of the NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year would have such a significant impact.

They lost their first three games for the first time since their 1973-74 season in the ABA before barely squeaking out a 129-125 double-overtime victory over Minnesota on Wednesday. Parker scored a career-high 55 points in that game to help get San Antonio back on track.
