The Official 2006 New York Mets Thread

The New York Mets have agreed to a deal with the Kansas City Royals that will send right-handed starter Brian Bannister to Kansas City for right-handed reliever Ambiorix Burgos, ESPN's Steve Phillips reports.
Bannister, 25, was 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in eight appearances (six starts) last season. Burgos, 22, recorded 18 saves in 68 appearances, striking out 72 in 73 1/3 innings. The deal is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

decent deal, Banister would not make the staff anyway in my eyes.

I like the deal. Give me a 22-year old who strikes out a batter per inning over a lucky junkballer any day.

Harden to Mets for Lastings & Heilman????????????

Its in the works according to ESPN radio

One baseball executive told the Oakland Tribune the A' have resumed their pursuit of Mets OF Lastings Milledge, whom the team tried to acquire during the season. The A's, according to the executive, were offering pitcher Joe Blanton

The Phils would offer you Jose Mesa...but he is no longer around.....gonna be a tough year at Shea Stadium Greg!!!! :boohoo:

 :sidelol:

Not as long as we play the Phils 16 times, that's at least 15 wins for us!

:tantrum: He was clutch for us last year. That one hurts.

What hurts is that we made no attempt whatsoever to resign him. Didn't even offer arbitration. I guess they're counting on Dave Williams or the soon-to-be-resigned Vic Zambrano to fill the long relief/spot starter role this year. I'm very surprised and disappointed that they made no attempt to bring Ollie back.

I don't get it at all. Maybe the guy just told Omar he wanted out of NY? I don't know, but this one bothers me much more than Bradford, and he was pretty darn good down the stretch last year too.

I hope the master plan reveals itself soon.

Bradford didn't bother me in the least. The Orioles signed him to a THREE year deal (I believe the amount was $10M) and we're getting (I think) a second round pick from them. He's a good reliever, but that's simply too much to spend.

The master plan, I believe, is this (and it has some parallels to football): spend resources on the glamour positions, and rely on Omar's ability to find bargains to fill out the less important parts of the team. The team's long-term core: Beltran, Wright and Reyes, is locked up for several years. Money and talent should be invested in surrounding them with big hitters and good starting pitching, with the bullpen a secondary priority.

Bradford was set to be the 3rd or 4th righthander out of the bullpen and is basically a righty specialist (lefthanded hitters KILL him). Why spend heavily on someone like that?

And as for Oliver, as sorry as I was to see him go, we should at least consider the possibility that Minaya knew what he was doing there. Let's not forget the guy was an afterthought as a spring training invite, was out of baseball entirely in 2005 and was a really bad starting pitcher for the five years before that. Had Oliver been offered arbitration, he might have taken it and ended up with an absurd contract based entirely on his 2006 season.

To me, its looking more and more like Omar has a big trade in mind, I don't know what, but its like the big calm before the storm.

The Daily News said the Mets still want to add a starting pitcher. On the trade front, the White Sox (Javier Vazquez, Jon Garland) and A's (Danny Haren) might be the two most viable trading partners. Newsday reported the Padres are the clear front-runners for 2B Marcus Giles, but Giles' agent would not rule the Mets out as a possibility.

I'm still hoping for a push for Jake Peavy. That was rumored a while back, though I don't know how serious it was.

If the A's trade a starter, I doubt it will be Haren. Blanton seems more likely.
