The Official 2006 New York Mets Thread

The Daily News said the Mets still want to add a starting pitcher. On the trade front, the White Sox (Javier Vazquez, Jon Garland) and A's (Danny Haren) might be the two most viable trading partners. Newsday reported the Padres are the clear front-runners for 2B Marcus Giles, but Giles' agent would not rule the Mets out as a possibility.
I haven't heard about Giles' interest before. That would be a very nice pickup.

Mets brass plan visit to Los Angeles to pitch Zito

The Mets have also shown interest in a couple free agents as backup plans, including Jeff Suppan. But Zito appears to be their best chance to enhance their rotation at the moment.

I think he goes to the Rangers. In fact, I've been bracing myself for that for some time now. You don't hire Scott Boras if you're willing to take less money to play for a better team. And it's pretty much an article of faith that the Rangers will offer more money.

I too think Giles is heading to SD to join his brother.

SAN DIEGO -- Free agent second baseman Marcus Giles and the Padres were closing in on a deal that would allow him to play with his older brother, Brian, on their hometown team.

"We're putting in a lot of time and effort to get a deal done," Giles' agent, Joe Bick, said by phone from Cincinnati on Monday.

Mets met with Zito yesterday. Early reports say it went well.

Better still, these two articles say the Rangers didn't offer the 6 year, $100M deal we heard:

yep, and friends say he would take less to play for the Mets, but who much less is the question.

And Boras has let slip the parameters for a Zito deal, insisting that six or seven years will be required while rumors swirl -- somehow -- that the Texas Rangers have offered six years and $102 million. But Rangers GM Jon Daniels denied that the team had made any such offer

Any Zito news yet? Not that I am worried.

I'd be surprised if anything happened before 2007. Boras is going to play the Mets, Rangers, Giants and Mariners (those appear to be the only four suitors) off each other for a week or two and see what happens.

But, if you want my odds on this, here goes...

Mariners: 12-1 (I don't think they're really all that serious.)
Giants: 3-1 (Made strong runs at a number of guys, and should be taken seriously.)
Mets: 3-2 (Best spot for him, but maybe not the most money.)
Rangers: 1-1 (They will offer the most money, and therefore, are the favorites.)

Well, while it would have been great to get Zito, I'm not upset we didn't go with that contract.

Now it looks like Lastings will be package for a starter and we hope one or more of the young guns step up.

njfin, you hear anything about who were goin after?

agreed... a name like javier isnt something i was hoping to hear.
