The Philbin Legacy: Reggie Bush: "I Felt Like I Was Playing On The Replacements"

Personally I think it was more of Bush's running style rather than being a leadership issue. Really similar to Ajayi. Too much reversing field and losing 3 yards when a 2 yard gain was there to be had. Philbin and Gase's short passing offense can't afford that negative play or it stalls the drive. At the end of 2012 Reggie was doing a lot of dancing trying to hit the home run. Go look at the game logs.

Philbin wanted Carr. No one talks about that
Revisionist history for the Gullible: In a transparent attempt to make himself look better Philbin made that claim with no credible independent corroboration only after he was kicked to the curb.

Can you imagine showing up late to one of Jimmy Johnsons meetings?
A coach needs to be respected and if you don't have that there is no direction.........the team has already lost.

Or Shula's. Unfortunately this incoming generation of people and players is soft as a cloud, often with no work ethic or sense of responsibility whatsoever. It's pretty sad, anyone who has tried to hire employees under the age of 30 prob knows what I mean. These players today have it easy, they barely have to hit in practice anymore, and hard hits in games are pretty much illegal and going away. You would think they could at least show up on time to meetings when they are getting paid millions.

The other thing with Philbin is he lost his son right before coming over....you wonder how much of an impact that has on someone!

What's interesting is that he's now gone back to Green Bay...that's got to be tough. I bust the guy's balls as much as anyone, but losing a kid has to be one of the toughest things in the world.

Quiet now, adults are talking...

IT was an awful time for this franchise...Gase is far from perfect, but going from the slack-jawed, confused and extra queasy Philbin to a guy who is a little arrogant...I'll take arrogance every day of the week.

Philbin was arrogant too... but arrogant in the worst way.

I hear ya (and great to see you back Cedar!!!). It would be unimaginable to lose a child.. I shudder at the thought.

However, him rushing back to take this job if not emotionally ready is on him. But considering how when defacto demoted 2 levels to Colts OLC, supposedly his bailiwick, first he got Luck almost killed and this season either set or came close to setting the record for sacks on the QB, I'd say anecdotally that his incompetence had less to do with emotional trauma and more to do with that he was really just an il-equipped figurehead OC at GB..

I am not sure it was so much arrogance as it was him being over his head and not knowing how to respond....and the only way he could was by just saying because I said so (in mothers voice).

Everyone handles it differently, but having gone through it, it's not unusual for a career driven male (a.k.a., many of us, but clearly every HC before or since) to throw themselves even deeper into their job -- and given how many hours a HC job devours, would anyone even notice if he was in a healthy place to even be our HC?

Oh, I'm not excusing him being a complete nitwit on losing his kid...I'm just surprised he went back to Green Bay is all...but if they're willing to give him a job...

Thanks Vaark...it's good to be back.

I was never that excited at the hire in the first place...Clements (I believe) was their QB coach at the time, and really was the assistant in helping McCarthy develop Rodgers along, not Philbin. To my knowledge, and my memory of those days is a purple haze, but I think I remember reading that Philbin was really in charge of literally putting PowerPoints together and helping put a game plan together more than anything.

What always concerned me more than anything with that nincompoop was that he surrounded himself with guys that he didn't view as threats to take his job, guys that weren't going to elevate him, more or less guys he was just comfortable around. Look at what we had...Zac Taylor, Mike Sherman, and a whole list of others...it was like an acid casualty version of Richard Karn's "Family Feud"...couple this with his propensity to run off guys who weren't always the nicest guys on the field but actually produced...it was indicitive of his tenure as a coach.

Couple this with the Bullygate fiasco, his underhanded dealings with Aponte, and everything else, and you had a real shitstorm. I'm glad he's gone. Never liked the guy...I always hated people coming up and telling me "Oh Cedar, I watched Hard Knocks...Joe Philbin..you've got a hell of a coach there"...I always wondered if they had gotten some bad acid or something.

He was a terrible head coach. Ross showed his cluelessness for football decisions by hiring him...as I think that he thought Philbin, by virtue of his "Offensive Coordinator" title, was in fact, in charge of the Green Bay offense...

As I've said, I think Gase has his shortcomings, but he's a guy that I think can do some good things with this team. We've whiffed on so many coaches over the years, and he doesn't fistpump, doesn't act like a mummy, and doesn't have a mean pornstache, so he might be worth giving a few years to.

who cares about this?

This is a Miami Dolphins fan forum. A former Miami Dolphins player offered some thoughts on the wretched state of our team during his two years here. I care. **** off, kid.

Thanks for posting this, Vaark. Wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

One thing that I think stands out to me is that Dan Campbell may have been a really good thing for the Dolphins, even if he was only in charge for a short time. It seems like in his 3/4 of a season, he instilled some accountability and discipline in these guys and gave Gase a better situation to work with.
