Ricky Williams gets paid to do card shows. So do Zach, Seau, and others. All of those guys also get paid to do football camps, corporate events, charity events, and more. While I'll agree the news article sounded silly, Sage is doing nothing different than any other player -- he is trying to get paid to make appearances. Big deal.
