Oldest Dolphins Memorabilia

This is the ticket stub from our final win from the 18 game winning streak covering 1972 and 1973. We opened 1973 hosting the 49ers on an incredibly hot day. There are famous pictures of an old John Brodie struggling to deal with the heat on the bench. I think he had to be pulled from the game due to the conditions.

It says Game 5 because they counted the preseason games. We must have had four home preseason games that year. Imagine that, for those who believe the current preseason set up is too long:

This is a strange one. The NFL teams in that era had basketball teams that played a handful of games each spring for charity. In spring 1973 the Dolphins played the Redskins in one of those games. As you can see, it was a big deal locally, with a packed house and hosted by Rick Weaver and touted as Super Bowl Part 2. This is the inside of the program.

BTW, the Redskins won, 85-77. I know that only because I wrote it on the front cover:

Dan Marino rookie card is prob the oldest thing I have. Was bought in late 80s, back when u thought u could retire off sports cards. Crazy thing is if I can find them or didnt get rid of then in the move, in 89 my mom took my to a fins-browns game. On the flight from Mia to Raleigh I met a man from Rochester, NY. Big fins fan. We became pin pals when it was same for 10 year olds to be friends with 40 year olds. He had a friend that worked for Eastman Kodak. He sent me field photos from the game, autographs, think shula, Mark's brothers, Louis Oliver, sammie smith, a danny bar (I ate it hut kept wrapper lol), honestly if j look deep enough I mk ight still have the poster of dan in his zubaz pants. If you were a fins fan kid in the 80s and u didnt have that poster welllllll. I also have on VHS the "cant touch us" video the guys put out

I believe this is the oldest Dolphins memorabilia I have. In 1969 I was 10 years old and the Dolphins were struggling mightily. The city was down on them for the first time. It was four years into expansion and the team was declining instead of improving. So I looked up the names of many players in the phone book. Yes, the white pages phone book. That was our only source. Several established Dolphins players were there so I wrote brief encouraging letters to them late during the 1969 season. The only one who responded was the tight end Doug Moreau. He was an original Dolphin drafted in 1966 and played throughout the '60s, ending his career in 1969.

Anyway, you can see what a classy thoughtful guy he is. Moreau has been a high level politician in Baton Rouge and also an LSU sportscaster on radio and television.

Classy!!!

A good friend of mine has a sister who owned Where in the World Travel in El Segundo, CA. She had the Los Angeles Raiders account when they were in LA. He and her went to the SB in '95 in Phoenix (Steelers lost to Dallas) and they got to go to an NFL merchandising party. He picked me up an authentic Wilson game jersey. Sand knit. Never worn it. Would love to send it to Miami and have Marino autograph it.
And yeah, I've got a Marino rookie card too!

This is really cool. Thanks for sharing all this great stuff. Love the letter from Moreau.

You are welcome. I forgot I had that letter until I saw it. Then I immediately remembered the circumstances and who it was from, before looking at the signature.

I have two boxes of old stuff but I hadn't seen this one in a long time. The Dolphins memorabilia was a bonus because the box also included treasured family photos and letters from the '60s and '70s. I was amazed at one item after another. Thanks to this forum for unintentionally helping me find it.
