2016 Coaching Data Base

With the news that the Browns hired a guy out of the New York Mets' front office, I can only imagine that this is what the scene is like right now as he shows up to get settled into his new office.

Tannebaum closing the deal

Dont know how it initially popped in my twisted mind... But Im starting to fear the Campbell interview... Im pretty sure he's going to nail it! Ross is an idiot and Tbum is looking for a yes man... They cant give Dan the job right? Can they?
Tannenbaum isn't looking for a yes man, he's simply looking for a winner. His whole career as a top professional football executive (and Ross's right hand man to run the Dolphins football operations) is predicated on finding the right guy to coach the team. Another big failure and his career is cactus. I think that they are lining up a role like Assistant Head Coach for Dan Campbell. He's popular and has motivational skills but is still a work in progress re actual coaching and tactics - he's wet behind the ears and it was obvious in several games we should have been able to win. Ross will probably accept Tannenbaum's recommendation, like he did when he fired Joe and appointed Dan the interim coach.
Mike is handling this as a professional. He is casting a very broad net and not rushing to an immediate decision. I expect that they will evaluate many coaching categories (eg results, motivational skills, player development, experience in developing coaches, leadership skills, media skills, character, decisiveness, preferred OC and DC as his key coaching team, etc and force rank each of the applicants. It will be thorough and analytical and not just based on the smoothness of presentation and charm in the interview (or the richness of the suntan).
BTW - Stephen Ross is not an idiot. Where some other owners inherited their fortunes, Ross is a self made man who began as a Detroit tax attorney and has become the biggest property developer in New York with an estimated net worth of over $8 Billion. Yes, he's bigger in business than his arch rival, Donald Trump. Ross has been inexperienced in some of his football decisions and made some mistakes, but he is not an idiot. Smart people like him can learn from mistakes. I'm pretty sure that the learning from the Philbin coaching period is the importance of appointing a coach who can motivate and inspire others, not just a structured, rigorous X's and O's guy with high character as the #2 guy behind a Super Bowl winning team. If I was a betting person, I'd expect that Tannenbaum's recommendation will be in stark contrast to Joe, ie his strengths will be Joe's biggest weaknesses. For that reason, don't dismiss the prospects of Teryl Austin or Hue Jackson.

Despite the fact most of Detroits resources ($, draft picks) have gone into the offense over the years, it was the defense that carried them.

Teryl Austin lost his best two players on defense and still had them as one of the top defenses in the league.

If any coordinators should be getting hype, it's Austin.

So we bash Gase when his top 4 targets miss 31 games. Doesn't have crazy numbers and lost White before the year and Marshall traded. But Austin loses two guys, his D goes from 3rd to 10th and he is a superstar? Has no HC exp and has been a coordinator for a grand total of 2 years but he's so much better. Wow the agendas are amazing

What do you define as one of the top defenses in the league? 23rd in pts against and 18th in yards.

Shanahan has had two interviews so far. Haven't heard of anyone else having two, so I still think he is in the drivers seat.

Wonder if the Dolphins met with a college coach or coaches on the days they only had one interview. They probably would have kept it quiet because of recruiting. Might have met with Mora.

When was the second one?

Well the first contact was Dec. 22nd with Marino and Tom G. but they didnt call that an interview so technically he has had only one interview. I wish he was in the drivers seat but I don't believe that is the case.

I would be more pleased to see Campbell get and make a success of this job than any other candidate. Unlikely but that would be ****ing awesome
