If the reports of Smith getting $24 million in guaranteed money are accurate, the Dolphins will likely have to offer in the area of $22 million in guarantees for Brown. Smith's total guarantee was a 20 percent improvement on what Eli Manning, the No. 1 overall pick in 2004, received from the New York Giants.

If that percentage increase is to be used for Brown's deal and based on the $18.3 million that Oakland offensive lineman Robert Gallery received last season, the guarantees would be just less than $22 million for Brown.

its looking like it might be a few weeks before ronnie is signed. this is alot of $ to give to an unproven rookie.

ronnie, First: run, catch, td, work hard . Then, you`ll got the money.
dont like it? ok, move back to Alabama

Since a few years, rookies have lost the radar...they`re nothing in the league but want a lot of many for what? the name? say hi to Akili Smith, Leaf, etc

Agreed, rookie contracts should be incentive based. NOT gaurenteed money.

He might be unproven but that is the cost of a top 5 pick. That is how it goes, we knew we'd have to give him a lot of money when we picked him. Cant say prove yourself and then get paid, that isnt how it works. We're paying for his potential, and hope that he lives up to being the #2 overall.

What do expect with the #2 pick. 18 mil 22 mil who cares. We pay good money to see this game. I don't care what you pay just get him on the field.

You'll care when we're in cap hell and can't afford him anymore.

I'm hoping that as it's paid out to him over the next 4-5 years that other older players like JT / Zach / Madison will be starting to step out so we won't be in that position.....

I agree. In no way am I jumping on the "I dont' want Brown" bandwagon, but from a pure money standpoint (Wanny word!!) $22 million is too much IMO. I don't care what the goign rate is. There is no damn reason on God's earth why a 20% increase in salaries is needed in 1 year. Cost of living raises are 3% or less...and these people aren't going to starve

And most people aren't going to want to admit it, but lets be serious, since Ricky is in camp we don't need to hurry to get Ronnie in due to a "RB necessity" need.

look on the bright side.....the total cap space increases every year to help offset increasing salaries as well so if this is spread out right over the next 4-5 years it's doable although a pretty penny.

I see Ronnie holding out untill towards the end of camp which means Lamar Gordon will be our starter on opening day. Ronnies should be rounding into playing shape around the time Ricky is allowed to play and I think Ricky will tear things up when given a chance. I know Ronnie wants the $ but this hold out could seriously affect his playing time, especially if Ricky returns to the Ricky of old.

Collective Bargaining Agreement!
Seriously, the NFL needs to stop paying rookies so damn much. Every year the rookies get paid more and yet the same amount end up being nobodies. Tim Couch got something like $30 million from the Browns for being the first pick and playing a few seasons, Akili Smith got a lot of money (not sure how much) for winning all of like three games with the Bengals, we all know about Ryan Leaf...
These guys (Ronnie Brown included, just because we drafted him doesn't mean he's the second coming of Christ) have yet to prove anything in the professional league and yet demand more and more money. If a guy like Tony Gonzalez asked for a new contract (he did, few years ago) then you give it to him because he's proven himself every season. Alex Smith could break his leg, be unable to play, and just go home and relax for the rest of his life because he's got $20 million in his bank account. I really hate these rookie contracts, especially when it causes a holdout.

If there wasn't a salary cap I wouldn't care what they paid him. Being that they have the salary cap, there should also be a cap on ROOKIE salaries. Honestly, they haven't even played a down in the NFL and they want big money. Sorry, prove yourself and then you get the big money. The whole thing sickens me. They think just because they were drafted at a certain spot, they deserve money. Every rookie contract should have incentives, but only be able to sign for the league minimum. You think you're such hot stuff, then you shouldn't have a problem with signing a contract that's heavy with incentives. After 2 or 3 years when you have proven you're worth the money then I don't see a problem with you asking for that kind of money.

Anyone see an alarming trend here?

Let's do a quick study:

2004 Salary cap: 80.52 Million
2005 est. Salary cap: 85 Million

Increase of 4.48 Million, or a 5.6% increase.

How exactly are teams supposed to fit 1st round rookie contracts into the cap when it rises about 5% a year and rookie contracts are rising 20% a year?

God I hope fixed rookie contracts are in the next CBA... it's getting a bit rediculous.

I gave this thread 5 stars for this post alone.
