3 Things Philbin Wants RT to Improve On

He needs a threat in the backfield, a RB that can gain yardage with a bad o-line CJ2k fits the ticket because he can make people miss, do y'all remember the game he played against the dolphins? if they blitz then we hit them with a draw or a pass out of the backfield.

No its not just you. His pocket presence is horrible and needs to be improved.

I disagree. Tannehill pocket presence is fine. There were too many times last season where the pressure was quick, without a blitz, and from multiple rushers.

Yes the line was bad.

But there were times this season he had plenty of time to throw, and he has no pocket sense at all, it collapses around him and he does nothing to help out his line by either stepping away from trouble or tucking and running.

Usually but with wallace I think its more of a drop back and release right away. He's showed he can burn just about anyone and can catch up to the ball. Tanne had plenty of chances last year even with the ****ty line and still failed to connect. And when he did, wallace had to slow down. That's a result of holding the ball to long cuz wallace is too fast

Thats absolutely right. There is no point in wasting time with player development. Every rookie that doesnt show elite talent right away, should be cut.
Once a player makes a bad 1st impression, they should be dumped. Even when they were playing out of position.
Thank God we dumped Wade Smith when it was clear he couldn't play LT. He never amounted to much.

Oh you, go kick freaking rocks! I wanna see how much Pocket Presence you have left after getting you brains bashed in for most of the season.
 
Its not just you - you diagnosed his problem spot on! And its my belief that this kind of "pocket presence" cannot be taught or learned...you either have it or you don't. The clown from Michigan who was our starting QB sucked at this even worse - IMO its what makes Brady so great - because he has pocket presence he can relax and be very accurate. RT lacks it - bigtime! And I am not a big RT critic - I actually love how competitive he is, and how athletic he is - and he has a very strong arm. He is NOT a Jedi when it comes to knowing what is around - he cannot FEEEEL the force!

He gave a more bland answer than I thought, considering it was obvious to anyone that the deep ball needs fixing and the reaction to pressure has got to get dramatically better. I'm not worried about the INT's though, too many of those were a product of having to get rid of the ball extremely quickly due to our awful line. He's right to be optimistic, but these areas have to improve in a third full year of starting or its going to be another year of not good enough, which should rightfully cost Philbin his job.
 
Very few QBs can consistently hit a 9 route on the sidelines yet that's what was expected of Tannehill last year. Surprisingly, Sherman rarely moved Wallace off that route where he could adjust to the throw. Hopefully Lazor is flexible enough to create something that works instead of forcing the square peg into a round hole.

I don't disagree that the biggest problem isn't his pocket presence, a bigger problem is his escape ability. He can't make people miss or isn't strong enough to break any tackles. If you watch Luck he ALWAYS makes the first and often the 2nd and 3rd guy miss, and rarely does the first guy get him down. Ryan rarely breaks a tackle and more often than not, the first guy gets him down. Marino couldn't out run my grandmother, but I say he wouldn't have taken 30 sacks last year. He had the ability to make people miss in a phone booth, and could use blocks in ways Ryan hasn't learned to date.

Ryan has very good speed but very average acceleration. Nor does he have a great feel for how to use a defensive players momentum against them. This is an area he has to get much better at, or it won't matter how much we spend on OL.

Typical fan who can't take a real look at his qb. Just because the o line was horrible doesn't give Ryan a free pass when the time was given to him in the pocket. He holds the ball to long and can't sense pressure. If you can't agree with that then I don't know what to tell you. The evidence is right in front of you.

Agreed. Ryan could be a big threat to defenses if he did these things. He's a former we he can move with the ball. He just never does it.
