Jeez, I go out to dinner with my wife, and look at the action I miss!
Here's the thing that astonishes me: the original report (from ESPN) said that the Mets would get Ramirez and Baez, the Sox would get Cameron and Huff, and the Rays would get Shoppach, Sanchez, Petit and Milledge. Forget the other two sides for a second; Tampa would be getting Petit, Milledge, Sanchez and Shoppach for Danys Baez and Aubrey Huff. That's a bigger ripoff than the Kazmir/Zambrano deal! Four prospects that are likely among the top 100 in baseball for a good, but not great righthanded reliever, and a positionless slugger that's been slumping almost all year.
I think the Mets make out well enough, because Ramirez is exactly what their lineup needs. I'm not thrilled about him possibly playing RF, but I'll get over it. With Piazza's contract coming off the books next year, they can handle Manny's deal. Assuming Ramirez is due $21 million, that's offset by the $17 million from Piazza and the $7 million from Cameron's deal.
I have no idea why the Sox would want to do this deal. That's why I'm skeptical that it will happen. Theo Epstein is a pretty bright guy, and I don't see him getting snookered like this. The only way it makes some sense for him is if he's preparing to lose Johnny Damon in free agency and sees Cameron as a suitable replacement, and he's planning to make good use of all the money saved on letting Damon and Ramirez walk. And even that strategy is questionable.
Needless to say, I'll be watching this intently for the next 2 days.
