7/27 Training Camp updates

Sounds like its only a question of when Landry takes over as the starting slot receiver. Gibson and Matthews combined for almost 800 yards last year, and if Landry wins the starting job he could be looking at a really big rookie year. I do think that either Gibson or Matthews won't make the team, and it might come down to health. WR is very deep this year so we can't keep everyone.

Dolphins receiver Rishard Matthews has felt like the odd man out this offseason. He showed a lot of promise last season starting as the slot receiver when Brandon Gibson went down with a patellar tear.
Yet with Gibson back and the Dolphins using a second-round draft choice on Jarvis Landry, Matthews is on the bubble. There have also been reports of discontent between Matthews and the coaching staff, and Matthews has acknowledged trying to improve his maturity level.
But there’s no question he can catch the ball and at today’s practice he was a prime target for quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Gibson, still coming back from the injury, sat out the second half of practice and was seen with ice on his knee.
Matthews was the most active receiver at practice today and nearly made the play of training camp with a one-handed grab over Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes. It was ruled incomplete but it’s a glimpse of how hard Matthews is working to stay on the roster.

There was a contrast between Matthews’ effort and receiver Mike Wallace who avoided making a diving catch on a deep Matt Moore pass early in practice that would have been a touchdown.
Of course, Wallace is Miami’s $15 million man and it might be smarter for him to avoid a potential injury at a July practice. But after questions about Wallace’s effort last year, his lack of effort on that play didn’t go unnoticed by the fans in attendance.

The Dolphins are deep at tight end with Charles Clay, Dion Sims, Michael Egnew and fifth-round draft choice Arthur Lynch. But could Gator Hoskins also have a shot at a roster spot?
There’s almost no way the Dolphins would carry five tight ends on the 53-man roster. Most teams don’t even keep four. But when asked about his tight ends, Philbin singled out Hoskins. He said the Marshall product has good poise and can adjust on the field.
Philbin also praised Sims. He said Sims played more snaps than any other tight end in Saturday’s practice. He said the second-year player has a lot of potential.
Expect Sims to get plenty of snaps this year as the team runs two and three tight end sets.

Is it just my imagination or was Wallace only mentioned when talking about incomplete passes? I'm beginning to think the long ball issue isn't because of Tannehill, since he doesn't seem to have any trouble hitting the other guys long.

You are on to something. Could it be in spite of the apologetics & spin that Wallace really is a 1 trick pony?

I sure hope this new oc is not gonna run the qb to contact...he takes enough punishment in the pocket lets not pull an rg3 and run him to it...Jarvis Landry balling in pads good day for Rishard Mathews Miamis dumb to cut that guy...right tackle struggling in pass pro...sounds like colledge at least for a vet signing isn't washed up...brenner struggling with strength first day in pads not good for him...

Billy turner getting reps with the 1s in pads...like that...I really want that guy on our oline...liked the motion of Wallace into the slot about time...

Sounded like even aikens showed up today...wish they had told us how tight ends fared one on one blocking in their reps...

havent heard much about dion Jordan as an edge pass rusher...to take the next step he should be dominating the 2s and giving the 1s hell...not a peep so far that I can recall

I know that Kelly's system is Touch Down, First Down, Get Down, and Foles seemed to do well with in last season. Given Tannehill's edge as an athlete, he should be able to keep himself out of harm's way.

He better...last year he even tried to stiff arm a guy on a long run...get down get out of bounds...I just don't know from what I've seen thru 2 years if that's his mindset...it needs to be though

I agree with all of this, but I'm still in favor of utilizing Tannehill in the read/option, and I'd ask him to pull it down and run more, and/or take more opportunities to buy time by escaping the pocket. I don't believe Sherman adequately drilled avoiding hits; I know that Kelly did, and I'm pretty sure Lazor has and will. The upside to the offense - and to Tannehill - you're leaving on the table by failing to take advantage of his speed outweighs the injury risk, imo. I'd only ask for 2 or 3 designed carries (or option-dictated carries) a game. But if executed well, those could be two or three big plays, and if not, you're helping your running game by keeping the D honest. Foles is very slow, but his ability to fall forward for a few yards helped the O-line and McCoy in the running game. Miller's going to need more help than McCoy.

Yeah that was a big play off read option, and we stopped running read options for a while after that. The staff has shown they have a lot of trust in Tannehill so far in certain situations but the area they don't want to trust him in is situations where you have to think on your feet. I can't really blame them, and this is probably one of the reasons they wanted to have a look at his tackle form.

The tackling form thing was absolutely nothing...a half speed going thru the motions drill...nothing to get from that just something on the to do list to mark off

I'm sure we will see read option more this year and I'm ok with it in bits and pieces...not something I want to make a go to thing though...and again they need to have a step back pass in the package which will help keep the d honest and help the inside running game...

I don't have a issue with Wallace not diving for that deep ball either in practice...good way to separate a shoulder...can't afford to lose him...

On smart football, they have a great video by Pete Carroll, where he details the way he teaches and practices tackling. It's worth a watch. Details how they're able to practice it without pads.

The talk about QB's practicing tackling made me think of this.

I didn't give it a second thought, its mind boggling somebody could read that than think: Cam Cameron stuff right there.

There is a good chance it was a 5 minute thing that they wanted to look at in pads and it'll never come up again. And there is also a good chance that Lazor, the QB coaching guru, was the one that wanted to see it for himself.

And I really like that "TD, first down, get down" thing that Kelly emphasizes, hopefully Lazor focuses on improving Tannehill in that as much as anything.

First day in pads and you didn't hear a peep about Brandon Albert getting beat...good sign....right side of the line is a sieve though...that's worrisome. Billy Turner needs to be getting reps on right side...RG or RT. Give the kid a chance to compete. I don't like reading Dallas Thomas getting run over time and time again and James getting beat repeatedly by Wake is one thing but Fede? Both Tennessee products who clearly, despite having athletic ability and size, lack fundamentals right now. I hope Benton can get them into shape quickly.

On a different note the best player by far in patriots camp thus far...none other than Darrell revis who they say has gotten back to pre injury form now...the quick acceleration is back...

Lazor better use a lot of motion with the wrs week 1...and design ways to line guys up off the Los to help with releases

If thats true you myswell just hand the Patriots 6-0 in the AFCE and at least 12-4 overall. We needed Revis on our side just to even the odds, the Pats getting him is just unfair.
