AJ is indeed improving

How about comparing the Old Bucs team to last season's Dolphins team....then you can compare Feeley to Young very easily. Like Feeley....young couldn't do anything on that team....he didn't have the time to throw...or a running game to help him.....youngs words when he left the bucs.....thank you lord...miracles do happen!

I was wondering when you would chime in.....

anyway, everybody is on a clean slate this year. It doesn't matter about past performances, it doesn't matter about INTS for TDs last season, or being a "career backup"

for the first time, all of that is thrown out the window. The person with the best chance of winning games in the year 2005 will start. If Sage plays lights out in training camp, or if Brock turns into Montana.......who knows...

I'm just glad that Saban comes in with no ties to anybody or has no commitment to any player. He wont say, "oh, well such and such has a big contract, so he'll start" and that is refreshing

The offense as a whole last season set AJ as well as the rest of the offense up as a failure from the very beginning. The offense was a complete cluster f*ck from the top on down. When you have coaches that can't agree on what should be run, and then you have Dave's hand in the mix, you are doomed from the get go.

Last year's offensive performance is a very poor indicator of a player's ability whether that player is AJ at quarterback or Seth McKinney at center.

This issue will boil down to this though. AJ is getting his opportunity in a real system to show he can be the man. If he does, then he's the man. If Gus beats him out, it is very likely the Dolphins will release AJ at the end of the season and go in a different direction.

Can't argue with that!

Bottom line regarding Feeley's worth is that when we made the trade for him noone in football operations (ie scouts, gms, personnel people) thought we got ripped off. The people who make their living evaluating football players all thought it was a good pickup for us. Secondly, Saban had plenty of time to review Feeley's performance last year and when all was said and done he decided that all he needed to add to the qb position is a backup. Guarantweed if Saban felt Frerotte was going to be the starter we wouldve drafted a qb in the draft. Since he didnt it means that he liked enough of what he saw from feeley to give him another year to prove himself.

Bottom line is that the people who get paid to evaluate talent believe Feeley has the chance to become a quality starter

This was the quote that bothered you. I apologize if you read every sentence literally. Every GM, scout and coach was not interviewed before I posted my supply. I will try to update my rolodex before posting again

You comparing Feeley to Young now?

I lived in Tampa during Young's stint with the Bucs when came over from the USFL. He didn't look so hot when he played on a crummy offense.

I echo all the sentiments of the last few posts. Last year he did not have a chance, not a single chance and he still managed to put together a few game winning drives and manage to throw two of the finer touchdown passes I have ever seen(The one to DT in the Patriots game, more the one to DT in the Cleveland game). Call me crazy but I think that, along with the opinions of numerus coaches, GMs and scouts who are payed copius sums of money for those opinions, AJ just might be worth a shot in a first year of a dynasty that could be lurking and developing for a long time.

... AJ just might be worth a shot ....

If he beats out the competition he will get his shot.

It should not be a question and to be honest I dont think it is a question anymore. Feeley is young with a ton of upside. Ferotte is on the outs of his career and was brought in because he knows the system so if AJ were to go down, our season in not necisarily over.

A bit on topic, if any of you were expecting Brock Berlin to come in and make some noise in minicamp, sorry, he didnt

Comparing Frerotte to Feeley is silly. Frerotte has started in 64 games while Feeley has only started in 13. Frerotte's TD:INT ratio is much better than Feeley's and Frerotte's QB rating is more palatable than Feeley's. I don't think Feeley has "tons" of upside, but I certainly think his potential was overcome by what he had to play with last year. I hope Feeley takes this opportunity to learn from a veteran, and doesn't get down on himself and his abilities because Frerotte is winning the QB competition at this time.

I cannot argue with that, from what I saw today I would have to say that Ferotte has a slight advantage but it is only mini-camp and Feeley definatly has the gun for the job and the deep balls he was slinging were suprising in both distance and acuracy. It will definatly be interesting to see how this battle progresses, I am impressed by both quarterbacks. At the moment Ferotte has a very small edge but Feeley is looking like a gamer

Gus is winning right now..Hmmmm, I didn't get that impression based on this mini camp's reports, he's getting picked more that AJ..and under or overthrowing everyone..it was said that AJ has a nice touch to his passes. The only thing I think negative about AJ is when he's pressured.

Here is a copy of yesterday's post practice meeting with reporters (Saban):

(On the repetitions at quarterback) – “Since we are pretty much still in a teaching mode, we’re not really concerned with breaking down reps or who gets what reps. We do rotate them from team to team at times so that, especially the first two guys, end up working some with both units, just from a timing standpoint, getting snaps from both centers, throw to different receivers at times. Gus (Frerotte) has done a very, very good job so far. Of course he has a little upper hand in terms of knowing the offense, but we are very pleased with the way A.J. has progressed in terms of learning this offense and being able to implement it. I see him showing a little bit more leadership, a little bit more confidence each day as he grows into it. We are not disappointed in the way those two guys are progressing. Sage, I think, is still thinking a little too much, but when he feels comfortable in what he is doing, he is doing a good job as well.â€Â

You can put your own bias or spin into what he said, as you see fit. However, stating that Gus is ahead of Feeley (which has been said by Saban previously) is not out of line, or inconceivable when given this statement from yesterday- and the report that Gus completed 8 of 11 passes in drills, and Feeley completed 5 of 15 passes in drills yesterday. However, I would take any of these practices with a few grains of salt as it is inevitable that the reports will be tainted with bias, no matter how accurately one would wish to report what he saw.

I just hope Feeley can fight through it and tap into the abyss of potential he seems to possess.

I put this response in the AJ improvement threat, but thought I should let everyone know the latest on the Qb's

Here's the latest I've read on the subject:

Feeley must show that he is better than average after showing glimpses of greatness in 2004. He finished the year with a below-average 61.7 passer rating, completing 53.7 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 11 games.
Could Gus Frerotte start for the Dolphins?

Saban was also pleased with his three quarterbacks -- A.J. Feeley, Gus Frerotte and Sage Rosenfels -- though Frerotte has a little edge at this stage based on his knowledge of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan's system.

"All three quarterbacks have progressed nicely," Saban said. "Which one's going to start, and how are we going to make that decision . . . we're going to play the best player. Whoever plays the best. Isn't that what everybody would do? We'll do that every position, and most certainly we'll do that at this position."
On the learning curve

Right now, Gus knows the O the best, as expected, but the other 2 are progressing nicely too. AJ does have a chance to start.

Of course he has a chance, but he still sucks.
