Intersting fact about Pennington:

His only win in eight starts last year was against Miami

....Maybe that's why some of us seem to think it's a good signing, they're blinded by his record against the Phins.

What some of the phinfans don;t realize is that if he joins the Phins, he will have nobody to beat.

True, but he did have a horrible o-line last year. Maybe even worse than ours.
Another interesting fact. He has the highest completion percentage of ALL-TIME with a minimum of 1,500 pass attempts!

After careful consideration, I have to vote AGAINST it. I realize he's likely better than McCown but I think the skill level he possesses over McCown is offset by the lack of synergy between Pennington's STYLE and the Miami power running game. This would be different if it were Cam Cameron's offense, absolutely. However, this was set up to be a ground and pound offense with a power running game led by Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. We have tight line splits, a guy in Ernest Wilford we brought over in part because he's a great blocker, our starting TE has been mostly a blocking specialist in his career, our high draft pick left tackle is primarily a run blocker at this stage, the guy winning our RG battle is noted for his straight ahead strength, and Vernon Carey is a powerful right tackle.

This is not anything resembling a finesse or sophisticated, horizontal passing offense. This is bloody, it's raw, it's straight ahead running married with vertical passing to one of the fastest deep threats in the league.

Kellen Clemens was not better than Chad Pennington. And, he's not better than him right now. But, he was still the best quarterback for that offense because his style best fit with the renewed commitment to in-line running and blocking that the Jets made when they paid Alan Faneca and Damien Woody big dollars to come in.

Notice the Packers, for as awkward as that situation was, did whatever was necessary to ensure that Brett Favre did NOT play within the division. What about the Jets and Pennington? Nada. Released within hours, and they don't seem to care a lick if he goes to Miami.

That tells you something.

There is nothing to lose by signing him. We have the cap space, and don't need to cut anyone of value for him. At worst Pennington replaces Josh, and performs just as badly as him, and he just cost the Fins some money they have.

Beck will not be the starter this year, right now it looks like Josh, so Pennington would not be stealing any playing time. And we can not start Henne until we are comfortable with him, and know the line won't kill him.

The Fins are not winning more than 6 or 7 this year. So this is not going to set us back.

And look at the bright side, if we bring Pennington in, and he performs well enough, after the year we could maybe get a draft pick for him.

im dumbfounded as to how many people want chad pennington here. the guys a scrub. just because he may be better than mccown doesn't justify bringing him in. thats like replacing suck with suck. and also to mentor ur rookie??? you gotta be kidding, i wouldn't let him tutor my nephew.

Why not? i mean the guy brings leadership and experience to the table, he woudn't be a bad mentor to Beck and Henne.

What i don't understand is what negative effect can pennington bring to the team if none of the QB's in our roster have done anything of significance? Mcown sucks so he will mostly likely be the odd man out.
Pennington > Mcown.

Sign him ASAP. Guy is a playoff QB. Get him into camp!

from what i recall, fiedler had a pretty high completion percentage for us, mostly due to dumping off passes to the running back who was covered and in turn got crushed once they got their hands on the ball... also fiedler couldn't throw a long ball on target to save his life.

Pennington > Mcown.

I wouldn't want any of our quarterbacks tainted with any knowledge pennington has on any level. thats my point. just say no. Also I wasn't a fan of the McCown signing, but its who we have and i suppose he's just filler. I doubt he does any mentoring to beck or henne.

Well, there are several differences in the situation - not least of all Brett Favre being a HOF QB absolutely beloved by GB and the fans there. Those people would literally tear the stadium down if Favre ever came in as the QB of a division rival. Seriously, they'd murder the GM and burn the place down before ever seeing Favre as a Viking.

Secondly, the Jets put themselves behind the 8 ball with regards to the salary cap situation. Someone had to go with Favre's salary coming on board, and someone had to go yesterday. Cutting Clemens isn't going to do it, but Pennington would fit the bill - and they just got an upgrade to Pennington so there he goes.

I'm not saying that Pennington's superlative physical gifts aren't a part of the reason they're releasing him, I'm just saying that there's other considerations as well.

Maybe because the Jets GM is doing Tuna a favor (Tuna mentored him) just like Jerry Jones did by giving away almost half the staff and players to him.

If he's better then McCown, why wouldn't you want him here? Especially if there's a chance McCown starts?

As far as our QB's Go, Chad will give us the best chance at winning. I cant stand to see john beck fumble another load of touchdowns the other way. or let another rookie have a go. We need the best potential there is right now to assist with getting our offence where we need it.
