Armando Fins should have over spent (if we did then he would say we spent to much)

This article is exhibit 1A as to why Armondo should stick to reporting the facts instead of stating his opinion. Paying players more than their value is what gets you in cap trouble down the road. This also be a very bad year to overpay linemen with how deep the draft is. And one more point, what happens when they need to resign Tannehill and they have no cap space? You end up gutting the rest of the roster which causes liabilities down the road. Armondo is just doing what he does best, creating hysteria.

I have to disagree. Overpaying on long term contracts get you in cap trouble. Overpaying on short term (1-3) years is the price you have to pay to compete to get what you want. People here are to naive, terms like you "build through the draft" are nonsense. Correct me if I'm wrong but we have drafted every year as has teams like Jacksonville and the Raiders. You build by being a smart all around team and don't question where you get the pieces from. Teams like the Patriots and Broncos have always been active in free agency.

Why does allowing players to develop and now take more of a role in playing get left off the decision table for letting other players go. Why is it a stretch to think W.Davis and J.Taylor will fill N.Carol's role. Isn't that why we draft players?

Talk of spending more money needs to consider our standard practice of signing FAs with a low year one cap hit that goes up on year two. This year, the Grimes and Albert contracts are structured that way. Their combined cap hit is about 8m this year, and about 20m next year. That's 14m less cap money next year, all things being equal.

Some have expressed a dislike for that strategy, but it's a sound one as long as you roll money over to next year to cover for the increase. What does it do for you? It gives you flexibility in case a player becomes available unexpectedly. Also, you never really know how much the cap will grow from year to year. If it goes up unexpectedly, like it did this year, it absorbs a lot of the hit. On the other hand, it creates the illusion you have more cap space than you can really afford to use since, remember, you need to roll money over to cover your butt.

In short, don't expect the Dolphins to exhaust their cap space, unless a great opportunity comes up. We still have room for a couple of moves, though.

To go with the increases, you also have the reductions of $7-8M on Wallace and Wheeler, and the cap going up at least another $10M next year. Add in Moore's expiring deal, and the 1 year deals as well.

The BIG key to all this is finding draft picks who are viable NFL starters, and we have failed miserably at this for years. Many here answer most needs with this being a deep draft and that's where we fill our needs but, that's nly gonna happen with 2 or maybe 3 players if we are Lucky.

Yeah, it's complex, but you still need to account for the cap increases. For example, Moore's contract expires, but now you need a new backup QB. Wheeler's cap number goes down, but who knows if we'll even want him on the team (and it's 4m dead money if we cut him after this year). I'm sure the team is keeping tabs on all details, but no one really knows how much the cap will increase (a lot of political interests involved in reporting one thing or another) and it's a fact that if they hadn't rolled over money and the cap hadn't increased this year we'd have been in a tough spot this year, given the needs and FAs we had.

Odd you would think a smart player would take less not to go to Jacksonville!

If Wheeler is gone next year, there is the $4M hit you mention but, we save the $2.9M salary. The cap will increase at least $10M next year, and the year after. Take it to the bank, the 40% increase in TV revenue has kicked in. There were some questions on it taking the jump this year due to the NFLPA borrowing from future benefits to stabilize the cap last year but, that's all worked out.

There is no reason to not roll over cap space because every team has to spend 90% of the cap over 4 years, and it allows you to chose when you want to spend. I would be very surprised to hear that any team has not done it.

He had a 3m hit las year and 17m this year. Same 14m difference we mentioned with Grimes/Albert. But we rolled some money over and the cap grew, and voila, we're golden.

I don't think teams are allowed to rollover, rollover. So if the phins plan on rolling over next year I think they'll have to stay under 133 mill this year and we are close to that already. If this is the case we will have substantially less to spend next year. I think the phins might sign front loaded extensions for odrick and pounce this year to free up money next year but that would mean less money for free agent signings this year. The bottom line is you can play with the cap but you can't beat it. We need quality low wage player in the draft to stay competitive.

With the new CBA teams are allowed to roll over any unused cap space. This was not the case before.

That's a crazy, and completely unrealistic example. lol

Complex, maybe a little, unrealistic, no. Just because you have a bunch of salary cap one year doesn't mean you will have it the next. Teams who roll money over aren't raising their salary cap they are just raising/borrowing the amount they can spend. At some point the rollover money will run out and the team will be in cap hell. That is why it is so important to draft well (better talent on cheaper contracts) than to continually throw money at players in free agency. Not drafting well and not having to resign their own players is the reason the Fins have so much cap space to being with.

The article is using a very far fetched example which HS kids using basic math can avoid, and will never even remotely come close to happening. The rollovers are all calculated by team projecting their needs and cap space over the next two years, and what they want to do with it.

Do you really think any NFL team, in a billion dollar industry, does not know what is coming?

That clown has the easiest job in the world.

All he has to do is second guess EVERY SINGLE MOVE that the Dolphins make.

We should have a sarcasm thread, where we can guess what that loser will use as a headline after every move that the Dolphins make.

Even second graders can play, it'll be a cinch. :err: :dphan:

True but, does not this forum do the same, and then some? lol
