I'll say this about the usage of the word "mafia". It means nothing to no one other then the person reading it. If it means nothing to you, no biggie. I'm German and I've been called a nazi many times in jest, but it still is offensive to me to a point. But now call me another racial slur or what not, I could care less.
I've seen people get upset when someone called Fieder "Jew Fiedler". They got all bent out of shape. Well boys, Jay is in fact Jewish. So how is that wrong? Because of the way it was used.
So what means one thing to you, means another to me. So yes, I can see how the usage of "Fiedler Mafia" could be offensive. And I also see this simple term being used to divide members of this board into a us versus them. Just like on the DD board or over on the Miami Herald board. This board is about the Dolphins. How many members of this board have migrated here from other boards just to get away from this sort of thing? I am one of them.
When you create a term to call a group of people, you thus seperate them from others. Saying "Fiedler Mafia" to distinguish persons is no different then saying "spic" to define a group of hispanics, n*gger to define a group of african Americans, etc. According to what the abridged dictionary says, those terms also define a tight group that sticks together. But they also mean more then that. They are used to divide, divide them from you. It seperates. And that my friends is what is wrong with it.
My vote it to filter it, or at least remove any and all postings that attempt to "group" people into such factions. And also, if we're allowed to call persons part of the mafia, then I should also be allowed to say someone is a "RW Nazi" because their opinion on Ricky. While its a different word, I'm still giving it the same meaning.
Ok, long enough. Back to the salt mine.

Because they are a tight group who stick together. It's straight out of my abridged dictionary, and therefore cannot be considered racial, as it applies to every nationality.
