Barry Jackson Sports Buzz 3/16/14

I do not like the Finnegan signing at all. i would have kept Nolan Carroll at the rate he got. I have no idea what Miami was thinking there. Maybe Miami got caught with their pants down on what Carroll's market was going to be. Maybe the Carroll representation spooked Miami and they mentally moved on but never had a come to Jesus moment again where the sides got back together to regroup.

I also would have paid either Schwartz or Asamoah. $4.5 mil for a good guard in free agency is fine. Gotta be realistic.

I agree with the way the Starks/Solia/Mitchell thing played out.

I'm pretty sure Miami is going to draft a back on day 2. Watch out for Ka'Deem Carey. He may fit what Bill Lazor wants to a T. That might mean CJ Mosley in round one, because this team needs a linebacker in the worst way. I'd love to see Billy Turner in round 3, but I am not so sure he gets there.

I hope there is something going on at LB. It really turned out to be a disappointing effort by Ellerbe and Wheeler last year.....with Wheeler being the larger disappointment of the two.

Would like to see a move here. We have a new LB coach, so hopefully has he a good plan to either get more out of these guys or shake it up and make some changes. When we got Wheeler from the Raiders, there was a lot of positive talk about an ascending player and how well he played in Oakland. I'm not sure what happened.....but between the stupid penalties and the inability to stop the run...he looked lost out there.

I'm speculating here......but perhaps they felt that Finnegan's drop off in play last year was injury related, as prior to that he was playing at a very high level. They also can be reliving the glory of their decision with Grimes....in taking a chance on a player coming back from injury and seeing how well it worked out. Time will tell.....

Those numbers on Finnegan are pretty ugly. I didn't realize he was as small as he his. We have two 5'9 corners - we are not going to be physical w receivers at the LOS. This bothers me.

Its basically the opposite of how the Sehawks Legion of Boom was set up. All of their corners were tall.

No disrespect, but have you ever watched Finnegan play? He's about as physical as they come for CBs

These are the same type fans that would have criticized the Grimes signing initially last year...that is until camp started and everybody could see how good he was.

Finnegan has been a pro bowl corner up until last year (injuries)....If he is healthy we got a steal.

I've watched him play...He is a guy you want on your team.

If this all comes together and they stay healthy...Grimes, Finnegan, Jones & Delmas is one impressive and scary secondary.

If they want to draft a LB I'd go with OLB Kyle Van Noy in the 2nd rd, I'd still draft Zack Martin at #19. I'd rather not spend a 1st rd pick on a MLB- the team still has to find a way imo to fit in Dion Jordan at OLB in a 4/3 since he's not best suited for DE, also dump Wheeler and probably Ellerbe next year when it make sense to dump their bloated salaries.

I like your thinking. I'd love to get Kyle Van Noy. Honestly, I'd sit at 19 and see if we could get Eric Ebron. If not, it's not popular, but this is a trade down scenario waiting to happen. Maybe with SF, who is flush with picks. No way can SF use all their picks on guys who can make their team. Trade down and find a way to get Van Noy and a back like Carey, and still have an extra day 2 pick in there. Miami can use as many day two picks as possible.

Ummm no…I just list the following

Dee Milliner…5 different surgeries, shoulder issues specifically
Eddie Lacy…toe issues, though he had a great year
Chance Warmack…knees
Jesse Williams…knees
DJ Fluker….shoulder
Mark Ingram….knee issue
Trent Richardson…chronic knee issues…odometer off the charts
Dre Kirkpatrick….recurring knee issues
CJ Mosely…dislocated his elbow in 2011 and missed time
Cyrus Kouandijo…failed physical with a knee

I could even add Julio Jones that broke down with a foot injury.

Nick Saban is a great college football coach. However, his players are damaged goods when entering the pros and they are extremely overrated.

What are doing at RT?

Something is going on at LB. Between the interest in Jackson and talk of moving Misi to MLB, I expect something early in the draft that shakes up the LB core.

Not a newsflash, but I do not see the status quo from last year starting in Sept.

Something is going on alright...it's called Ryan Shazier at 19.

I love that player. Love him. Explosive. Run and chase.

Van Noy I like too.

However, I would still say, I need a philosophy of what to do at RT. I do not want to forsake the line.

You move misi to mike you got a 2 down mike that teams will attack in man coverage you draft Kyle van noy to play strong his ideal slot in a 43 you got a 2 down strong that also will struggle in space...you can have one lb not great in space and coverage strong usually being the spot but you can't have two...especially when teams will speed up tempo and not allow you to substitute out in if they see that...which they would

You draft skov you got a 2 down mike...all these options listed would struggle in space and coverage and athleticism...instinctual yes but wear targets in coverage...

I would leave misi at strong and find or try to find an every down mike option or an every down weak by end of day 2...if you wait very late you can find a 2 down mike for the rotation I'd say

I think there's a very good chance a top cb drops in our lap on draft day and I wouldn't be surprised if we went cb with our first pick.

I would not move Misi either. That seems silly.

Personally I think it's the mike that they will go after they have wolb options and I think they want to see how jelani Jenkins develops...which means shazier who I wouldn't take in the top 20 anyways would be out...I think they will pass on mobley also I wouldn't do that at 19 either...could see a Matt Borland at pick 50 or the 3rd round...that's more your mike with very good instincts

Especially odd since we are giving Finnegan $11M and Carroll was signed for like $3.85M over 2 yrs. Actually a terrible contract, and Hickey's worst signing. Finnegan should be 3x the player Carroll is at those prices, and I highly doubt he will even be better than him at all.
