There were times last year when we brought in an extra lineman to help in the run game. That's a staple for many great running teams like San Francisco. These seem like ideal situations for Shelley, as it seems he is dominant in that area. While his pass protection seems very poor by those PFF grades, he is young and should improve some. At a minimum he looks like an impact situational substitution ... we sure had our difficulty in goal line and short 3rd down situations last year. Also, he gives us veteran cover if we don't have a rookie who is ready to step in or if our veterans like Garner and Brenner aren't good enough. This makes me feel better about him.
Finnegan isn't really a numbers guy. When he was playing well, his game seemed to get better in the 4th quarter. He created takeaways, was a solid tackler, supported the run, and he often irked the opposing WR into stupid penalties at crucial times because he got under their skin. With teams actively throwing away from Grimes, I think Finnegan has a chance to have a big year. If he can return to his previous healthy form, I think he will be a good CB. If not, he'll be cut. Less downside than most FA's. Plus, we are looking for Taylor and Davis to develop, so they should be significantly more ready this year than at any time last year. Finnegan isn't assured of a starting spot. Also, this is an insanely talented CB draft. While the S position is bad, the CB position is probably the best I've ever seen. It's so deep that both of the Florida guys are likely mid to late round picks, and there's a low but very real possibility one or both could go undrafted. It would be criminal if we didn't add at least 1 CB in this draft. So, Finnegan gives us options without much risk.
