Barry Jackson Sports Buzz 3/16/14

Especially odd since we are giving Finnegan $11M and Carroll was signed for like $3.85M over 2 yrs. Actually a terrible contract, and Hickey's worst signing. Finnegan should be 3x the player Carroll is at those prices, and I highly doubt he will even be better than him at all.

Gonna miss those all pro plays Carroll was always making.

The secondary fix seems very short-term to me. Finnegan is a likely upgrade over Carroll at least in the short-term (in hindsight I would have signed Carroll instead). Both Finnegan and Grimes are 30 and Delmas is signed for one year. That tells me the secondary could be an area Miami looks early in the draft. There are some really good corners out there to be had in the first few rounds.

Other than that, I'm very happy about free agency. Albert was a must have and Miami got that done. Mitchell is a nice surprise and fits the Dolphins switching gears a year ago to find players who can get to the passer. I'm glad the team was able to re-sign Grimes and Starks. Smith is a bit of an unknown so we'll have to wait and see there. I don't think there's much left on the offensive line in free agency. The Dolphins will have to find two starters in the draft.

Appears the patriots are shifting to a more physical in your face jam and ride coverage philosophy with the corners...not good for our pretty much all finesse minus Mathews wr core...

Lazor gonna have to use motion to the inside and late motion to get em off bad coverage match ups etc...late motion is something that he used a lot of at UVA...primarily with the tight ends though...

What are doing at RT?

I know what you are saying. It's quite the tight rope. I really like Billy Turner's movement skills. Can I get him in the 3rd? Probably not. We need a RB, LB and an OT and have only so many picks. Can't expect a starter as a rookie coming out of there that late at RT. Maybe somebody falls out of the sky like Zack Streif.

Other options, LB in the first and Billy Turner in the second to play RT with the back in the 3rd. Or, bite the bullet and take Zack Martin in the first and then Ka'Deem Carey in the second with a LB in the 3rd. The latter approach is the least inspiring.

I would not move Misi either. That seems silly.

As to Misi moving to MLB, it's not my preference either but Ireland caused some problems that have to be cleaned up.

1. Wheeler and Ellerbe both blow, make huge money and Wheeler is particularly bad at WOLB

2. They drafted Dion Jordan to play 4/3 DE when his ideal position is 3/4 OLB.

The question is, how do you fix these problems? Let's say that next year the overpaid and underperforming Wheeler and Ellerbe are shown the door, as they should be. Assuming that we stick with the 4/3 defense, I would have Misi at SOLB, move Jordan to WOLB and draft a solid MLB. OR draft guy like Van Noy, Christian Jones or Telvin Smith for WOLB, JOrdan at WOLB and Misi in the middle. Jelani Jenkins- very good coverage OLB, but he couldn't set the edge in college and I don't see that changing much in the NFL. 3rd down coverage OLB imo.

So what do you do? Maybe move Misi to MLB- he's a better athlete than advertised, 3 down MLB imo. And again, I'd rather have him stay at SOLB, too. Move Jordan to WOLB- there's no reason he can't play that and play it well, the caveat is that you HAVE to maximize hiss pass rushuing attempts, make him somewhat of a joker/amoeba/part time DE player. Get creative.

Hindsite is 20/20, but we could have had DT Star Lotuleilei and OT Menelik Watson last year instead of Dion Jordan, ideally a 3/4 OLB miscast as a 4/3 DE. I like the player, I want to keep him, he has great potential, but the fit was questionable to begin with- he's just not a DE. I fully expect and want him to develop with Miami, but say there's a 3/4 team with a top six pick that loved Jordan last year and Jadeveon Clowney is available when they pick- that's a trade scenario to consider.

I like Martin or Moses.

As I see it, there are 3 top-20 O-linemen in this draft, and they'll all be gone by 19. So you can reach on Martin or S'ua-Filo (who is the better OG prospect, imo), or you can draft one of the true top-20 guys in this class (guys who would have likely been top-10 last season) and look to pick up an OG or RT in the 2nd or 3rd.

THe LB situation is such a mess and now a need....

Ellerbe is playing the wrong position, Wheeler is always out of position, Misi is....Misi, not bad and would be fine if the other two played the way they were paid.

The Dolphins need at least one more physical receiver...doesn't matter if it is a TE or a WR, just someone who is willing to fight...

The OL needs at least another G and T and some solid depth...

**** you Ireland for leaving this mess...

There were times last year when we brought in an extra lineman to help in the run game. That's a staple for many great running teams like San Francisco. These seem like ideal situations for Shelley, as it seems he is dominant in that area. While his pass protection seems very poor by those PFF grades, he is young and should improve some. At a minimum he looks like an impact situational substitution ... we sure had our difficulty in goal line and short 3rd down situations last year. Also, he gives us veteran cover if we don't have a rookie who is ready to step in or if our veterans like Garner and Brenner aren't good enough. This makes me feel better about him.

Finnegan isn't really a numbers guy. When he was playing well, his game seemed to get better in the 4th quarter. He created takeaways, was a solid tackler, supported the run, and he often irked the opposing WR into stupid penalties at crucial times because he got under their skin. With teams actively throwing away from Grimes, I think Finnegan has a chance to have a big year. If he can return to his previous healthy form, I think he will be a good CB. If not, he'll be cut. Less downside than most FA's. Plus, we are looking for Taylor and Davis to develop, so they should be significantly more ready this year than at any time last year. Finnegan isn't assured of a starting spot. Also, this is an insanely talented CB draft. While the S position is bad, the CB position is probably the best I've ever seen. It's so deep that both of the Florida guys are likely mid to late round picks, and there's a low but very real possibility one or both could go undrafted. It would be criminal if we didn't add at least 1 CB in this draft. So, Finnegan gives us options without much risk.

I think that Shelley Smith starts, depending on what we do in the draft. The team desperately needs some run blocking help- that is pretty much a given with Smith and they can coach him up as per pass pro, reading stunts, all of that. His job to lose imo. Brenner and Garner are backup quality, at best.

finnergan will be just fine, he a great corner back and hes upgrade over all our corners, before his injury in 2013 finnergan arguably top 10 cb in the league, i feel like this year with a guy like grimes on the opposite side of him he will flourish.....everyone who doubts this move will over this move soon

Personally I think it's the mike that they will go after they have wolb options and I think they want to see how jelani Jenkins develops...which means shazier who I wouldn't take in the top 20 anyways would be out...I think they will pass on mobley also I wouldn't do that at 19 either...could see a Matt Borland at pick 50 or the 3rd round...that's more your mike with very good instincts

Borland is exactly what we need. A tackling machine at MLB. We have the athletes at OLB with Misi, Jordan, and Ellerbee.
I would take Mosley (1), and Borland (3) if they were available. The center of our defense is soft.
The Pats, bills, and Jets all run the ball well. We have to stop their running games and control the LOS.

Reading some of the posts in this thread one would think some of you never saw Finnegan play prior to his injury plagued year last season...If he stays healthy this year we could very well be talking about him next year the way we feel about Grimes now.
