Barry Jackson Tidbits before Training Camp

I dont know how you justify keeping Naanee over Bess.

Not sure how Bess' status is in question at all. He is probably in line to catch the most passes this season even if Johnson and Hartline are going to be tabbed as the "starters". His job is completely safe IMO.

Bess was an 80-catch guy before BM and might have the best hands of any WR on the team. Also, speed is not the most important quality for WRs in this offense, I don't see him being cut at all.

Bess getting cut is asinine! That "interesting" article fails to mention that he catches everything thrown his way unlike the rest of the receivers on the roster (hartline would have the second best hands on the team with Chad third). Most important part of playing WR is catching the dam ball? West coast offenses are predicated by short routes that are safe alternatives to the run game. How can they be safe if they drop the ball. Second most important thing a WR must have is YAC. That's where we are screwed! Only Ochocinco has proven that in this league and that was at least three years ago! Moore, Gates, Wallace, Matthews, or Pruitt must show they can take it to the endzone. Bess, Hartline (proof that YAC is not all about speed!), Ocho (last few years) can catch it but will not score! Can the fast shifty ones catch the ball and can the vets score when they get the ball will determine how good of a season we have on offense. Our QB's need to lead receivers better than what the wideout's have gotten the last few years also.

For once I'm not worried about our QB situation. I am however, 100% worried about our WR situation, I just feel like we're in really really bad shape in that department. We'll see, but I have very low expectations for the WR group as a whole.
I agree. But also keep in mind that we should have more weapons at wide receiver. I believe Egnew will have a big rookie year and Clay likely will take his game to the next level. Unfortunately, the front office couldn't fix everything in the offseason and wide receiver looks like a position that will need some major attention next offseason.

I think that Chad Johnson will prove to be a very good acquisition. Bellichick handled him poorly, he should have simplified Johhnson's responsibilities and set him loose to what he does best, play ball. Philbin looks like he's handling him correctly, and I think that Johnson will have a very productive year. I still think that Bess is in danger of getting cut, and I still wish that we had drafted Joe Adams, and as a second option Devon Wylie would have been good for the slot as well.
I can't see any situation where Bess is cut.

I agree that Bess has the best hands and should be safe, but what concerns me is if the writer got inside information that this is what Sherman or Philbin is thinking. I am not familiar with Richard Santamaria but the thought of cutting Bess is illogical. Roberto Wallace should also put pressure on Legedu Naanee, Cunningham and Matthews.

Brass - knows that Bess can elevate his game and that's the deal with the offseason messaging - they just want more

i never saw anything of substance that projected bj cunningham and rishard matthews in the 3rd round...

Aside from forcing Chad to tone down his act, it really wasn't Bellichick's fault he didn't get it done from a production standpoint in NE, it was Brady's. He refused to alter their playbook after noticing Chad couldn't pick it up. Hoodie mostly handles the defense and let's Tom run the offense. It's a machine and you either get down or get out. Chad didn't stand a chance.

Don't count on it. With Johnson on board they can move Hartline right into the slot, and we'll see what Pruitt/Moore/Wallace/Fuller/Matthews/Cunningham bring to the table. Bess is going to get squeezed.
Bess has more staying power than Hartline OR Johnson, especially Johnson who I have at 50/50 to even make the final 53.

Thanks for this article CedarPhin. You're an awesome guy to have as a fan of the Dolphins!

I also like Barry Jackson's work. I can't wait for training camp to start.

Bess is an effective pop gun. What we need is a rifle. I look to Fuller, Mathews, Cunningham, Moore, Pruitt and Wallace to threaten his job. Bess' upside is the most limited of all of them imo.

Yeah, I just flat out don't see it. First Fuller was a 1st round grade, now Cunningham and Matthews are 3rd round? Give me a break, guys. It's getting a little hyberbolic.

And again, Bess had his best season as an outside receiver before Daboll came in. He's being pigeon holed as a slot receiver only, but that's because he looks like a slot receiver and was shoved into it. Even sports writers are being lazy and saying he's one.
