Barry Jackson Tidbits before Training Camp

Tannehill is in witness protection.

You'll never see him this year.

I thought the most significant thing in there was Mike Pouncey's willingness to go on record saying that David Garrard has clearly been the best. All of the players have been very political when answering questions about the QB race. They want to know who the guy is quickly, but as for which guy they want, they've all just continually said "the best one". Hartline broke that a little when he labeled Matt Moore "his" guy, but he admitted it had nothing to do with OTAs or Mini Camps and everything to do with the fact that he's caught passes from Moore before.

Mike Pouncey comes right out and says "when Garrard is in, it’s a whole different tempo."

Very significant revelation, IF he's correct. Tempo seems to be very important to the new staff. If the offense has clearly run at "a whole different tempo" when Garrard is in then he's done 75% of the work he'll need to do to win the job outright.

Remember that the coaching staff are itching to pick a starter sooner rather than later, same as the players. They're not the type of people that keep a QB competition going into the 4th preseason game. They need to know which guy is the one so they get everyone the chemistry they need. They're going to know who their starter is probably within 2-3 weeks of the start of training camp. That's not much time. Whoever currently has a lead has a big advantage in a race that short. That's one reason Ryan Tannehill is probably already out of it. He's trailing by enough that it might not even be conceivable for him to win it within those 2-3 weeks.

i never saw anything of substance that projected bj cunningham and rishard matthews in the 3rd round...

Agreed, I don't know where the author got that idea from. Nonetheless, I think that Bess will be pushed for a roster spot, and pushed hard.

Bess has already been seen as having a "safe" spot on the team, there's nothing that suggests otherwise.

Uhh... ok. If you own a ranch, I would suggest that you don't bet it on Bess making the final 53.

Good info. And while not a house, ranch, etc., I'd be willing to bet a good chunk of money that Bess DOES make our final roster. No reason to believe otherwise. The guy has been our most reliable receiver the last few years. He's pretty much money on third downs.

If he does end up getting cut there better be a very good reason for it otherwise it'll be the first questionable decision of Philbin's tenure here that's fore sure. That being said, I can't see him not keeping Bess around. He's just too reliable for us.

Agreed, Agreed! I haven't seen much of Garrards QB play in Jacksonville! From what I vaguely remember he used his feet quite a bit to bye time. I personally like the fact that Tannehill will likely take a seat this season...

My question is what about Moore? Can he improve significantly from last season? Is he enough of a leader in the locker room ? How does this FO evaluate him fairly? Given the fact, that he apparently practices poorly...

So you think their is a legitimate chance that this FO might out-right cut D.Bess?

You're absolutely insane if you think Bess is cut. I just don't understand how people don't see a spot for a WR who 1) has the best hands of anyone on our team 2) is the best short route receiver on a west coast offense.

I'd offer some type of bet with you but we don't do custom titles or anything here. How about... loser pays for a year of VIP membership for the loser? That way the site AND the winner benefit! I love stuff like this :)

My general thesis is that at this juncture it would make sense to go with a receiver who has a bigger upside. I'm not trying to slam Bess, I think that he's pretty good. But pretty good shouldn't be good enough, and I think that the Philbin offense will be in search of the best and most dangerous weapons at skill positions. When I see Bess play, one word comes to mind, in the slot and returning punts- pedestrian. It obviously remains to be seen which of the younger guys steps up to the plate and threatens Bess. But I think that it will happen.

Lol he said "outside of quarterback, the most interesting position of the team is wide receiver". If by "interesting" he means Godawful atrocious then he's right on the money.

Just out of curiosity, where did you stand on the possibility of Brandon Weeden being drafted in the 1st round? Tim Tebow? People have a major habit on this site of proclaiming that no way, no how can something happen, and then getting awfully quiet when it happens. Preconceived notions often die painfully.

Weeden? I knew he was a first round quarterback. I think most people did, didn't they?

I'll admit Tim Tebow was a surprise. I had him slated in the 2nd to New England.

The draft is an entirely different monster, IMO. I completely understand what you're saying, which is in the NFL so many things are far from guaranteed. I see this team, and I see the production of Bess. I'm willing to make the bet! I only keep saying bet because you said something about betting the whole ranch and I figured it'd be a neat way to donate to the say. What do ya say?

Umm...pretty good? Bess has been very good for us at times. While not great, he has been our most consistent receiver since he's been here. Yes, he's not the flashiest or fastest guy on the field, but you still need a sure handed receiver that can get your offense a key third down conversion. Bess is that guy.

Younger guys...you do realize that Bess is only 26 going on 27 this season right? He's got that veteran experience but will still be able to keep his position on the team because he probably IS entering the prime of his career. He could very well have a breakout season on another team, even within the division, if we did end up getting rid of him. There's absolutely no reason to not have Bess on the team.

I don't have any desire to have my opinion elevated into a bet. My point is simple: I think that Bess will be significantly challenged for a roster spot this year. To those who disagree- so be it.
