Most interesting position other than quarterback: Has to be receiver.Brian Hartline and Davone Bess are safe; Chad Ochocinco is still too gifted physically not to make it unless he struggles grasping the offense: “He’s still got it; he looks like a young kid out there,” Reggie Bush said. Joe Philbin really likes Legedu Naanee, who's in the top four now but can't allow the young guys to badly outplay him in preseason.

"I'm excited about our wide receivers," offensive coordinator Mike Sherman said. "I know it's an unknown group."

If Ochocinco and Naanee stick, that leaves one or two spots for Roberto Wallace (most impressive of the unproven ones), Marlon Moore (good speed but some exasperating drops), Clyde Gates (still thinking too much), Julius Pruitt (three touchdowns in one June practice), and long shots Chris Hogan (the second-year kid from Monmouth who was decent in May/June work), B.J. Cunningham (too many drops), Rishard Matthews (will get a look on returns) and Jeff Fuller (practice squad potential).

### Quarterback chatter: With David Garrard the slight front-runner, here's what some people are saying: Center Mike Pouncey: “Garrard has been great, has been the main guy running with the first team. He brings leadership. Matt Moore did a good job last year but when Garrard is in, it’s a whole different tempo.”… Legedu Naanee: “David has that confidence about him." But also... "Guys believe in [Moore], which is important….

Plus, there's a lot more in there. Pretty solid article, with a lot of good info.

Jimmy Johnson said he’s eager to see what Moore could over a full season and believes he will surprise people…. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett sees a no-lose situation: “Moore can be a good starter; Garrard has a track record of success.”… Rams coach Jeff Fisher: “You can win with Matt Moore. He’s very talented.”CBS’ Phil Simms: “Moore is a natural thrower. And those types of guys, they get better every year. But do not discount Garrard. He’s big, good pocket presence, spins it. He has thrown for a lot of yards in this league and played for a team that had success. The ball comes out of his hand pretty easy. People trying to tackle him fall off him more than they do even Tim Tebow. He’s one big dude. They have three potential NFL starters and two have proven it.”

That's pretty good praise for our QB's. Actually I think we are in a good situation with 2 proven vets and a 1st round rookie.
Some one will step up.

Good find.

And a good thing, since he's gotta pick up the slack for everyone else down here.

For once I'm not worried about our QB situation. I am however, 100% worried about our WR situation, I just feel like we're in really really bad shape in that department. We'll see, but I have very low expectations for the WR group as a whole.

I like the fact that Garrard has had lots to say about Roberto Wallace. I hope this kid makes the team

I think that Chad Johnson will prove to be a very good acquisition. Bellichick handled him poorly, he should have simplified Johhnson's responsibilities and set him loose to what he does best, play ball. Philbin looks like he's handling him correctly, and I think that Johnson will have a very productive year. I still think that Bess is in danger of getting cut, and I still wish that we had drafted Joe Adams, and as a second option Devon Wylie would have been good for the slot as well.

I'd love to see Chad regain some of his previous form.

I cant see Bess getting cut this season, not saying he is that all pro receiver but he's still a top 10 slot in this league with reliable hands, mayby next offseason if the team goes WR early in the draft but not before then IMO.

I can see it both ways, but Bess imo is not good for offensive synergy. He's just too damn slow and will not command double coverage very often- he's just not a threat, and you want threats at WR to become a very good and dangerous offense. He has good hands and he's productive- so was Brian Finnegan. The question is- is that enough? Same for his punt returning- statistically he was pretty good last year, but was he a threat? On both counts I keep thinking the same thing- how good would Joe Adams have fit in down here in the slot and as a kick returner? That guy is just sick as a punt returner, and I think that he'll flourish at WR in Carolina. I never was a big Cam Newton fan, and I'll be the first one to say that so far I've been dead wrong about that. Imagine Newton scrambling around, buying time, and what Adams can do in the meantime. If not for the trade up to get Lamar Miller I would be severely pissed that we didn't draft Adams in the 4th rd- iirc Carolina drafted him in the 4th with the pick that we traded to move up and get Miller.

Bess ain't going anywhere

Don't count on it. With Johnson on board they can move Hartline right into the slot, and we'll see what Pruitt/Moore/Wallace/Fuller/Matthews/Cunningham bring to the table. Bess is going to get squeezed.

Bess has the best hands, best route running and is the best leader in the group, no chance he gets cut.

As I mentioned, I can see it both ways but see Bess as far from a lock of making the team. This offense will be far more wide open- does it suit his skill set?

Interesting article:

Davone Bess could be the odd man out in the Miami Dolphins‘ wide-receiver competition. He is very popular amongst the Phin fan base because he has a good story, being undrafted out of Hawaii, and embodies the “hard work defeats talent” mantra. This underdog is still the smallest and slowest receiver on the team. He is also returning from a partially-torn ACL and MCL in his left knee.Bess has good hands, makes few mistakes, but lacks big-play ability. He was Tony Sparano‘s type of guy, a “field goal” of a receiver, if you will. Why on earth would you use him to return punts? Because he was 5th in the league with an 11.9 yard average, you say? Yes, but his longest return was 25 yards. 12 different punt returners scored a touchdown last year, and 23 had at least one return longer than 25 yards. Tell me you ever had the feeling that Bess was going to break one. I dare you.Slow and steady doesn’t win in the NFL. Sorry.

Now, let’s break down the receiver race. I believe Chad Johnson, Brian Hartline, Legedu Naanee, B.J. Cunningham, and Rishard Matthews make the team. Once again we have to applaud Jeff Ireland, who waited patiently knowing there would be WR value in the late rounds of the NFL draft. Cunningham and Matthews were projected third-rounders because of their size and productive collegiate careers but apparently slid because of their lack of top-end speed. I believe they will produce in the NFL.
Last year, the Dolphins kept 6 receivers so there could be one position left. If available, the battle will be between Davone Bess, Jeff Fuller, Clyde Gates, Marlon Moore, Roberto Wallace, Chris Hogan, and Julius Pruitt.Joe Philbin will also place Reggie Bush and Lamar Miller in the slot, at times, to bolster the passing game.Analyze it any way you want, Bess is on the bubble.
