Barry Jackson Tidbits before Training Camp

I stopped having any hope for the Legedu Naanee signing when I watched a few of his Carolina games.

For me, I think the Dolphins themselves made him obsolete when they signed Chad Johnson. Naanee could have been a 3rd stabilizing veteran presence in the unit, but with Chad Johnson here then suddenly keeping Naanee would be overloading on (mediocre) veterans while not holding enough young talent that could actually develop into something. The mix would be bad, unless you're keeping 6 wide receivers, and like I said I see little reason to do that when you plan on using your RBs and TEs like WRs.

I think that Carolina made a good move trading for Louis Murphy. Murphy, Joe Adams, Brandon LaFell, Steve Smith, Greg Olsen- they're getting Cam Newton some weapons, good for them.

He was on my mock draft and I think he's the best pick we made, from a value perspective. Interesting that Slimm mentions McNutt. When you consider our new WR coach is his former OC in Iowa, Ken O'Keeffe, it doesn't say much for McNutt that we passed on him for BJ Cunningham.

O'Keeffe is the interesting coach in the mix. He's an ex-WR himself, but hasn't directly coached WRs for years. Has been instead a successful OC, with a Dan Henning-like penchant for pretty vanilla offenses. Apparently is a good QB mentor, also interesting as we don't have a QB coach (I think?). Could we see a committee approach to coaching the QBs from Philbin, Sherman and O'Keeffe?

Anyway, back on track, we've got this raw goup of receiver and a few guys we need to wring more production from. Ken O'Keeffe wouldn't be the name that jumps at you to accomplish that, in terms of being a progressive, modern coach who understands today's NFL receivers. On the plus side, he has had to turn pretty raw clay into Big 10 receivers and did a pretty good job with McNutt.

He's an unsurprising choice in that he's very tight with Philbin (as per Coyle and Sherman), but surprising in terms of the challenge we face to get a great corps out of the talent in house. Much as I like Philbin, might he have been choosing buddies to coach with in order to keep him secure and unchallenged as HC? Might he have been better served going out of that comfort zone and taking on an NFL coach (on the big assumption somebody of quality was available to offers)?

I believe Sherman is the QB coach as well as the OC.

na na na na na na na hey hey hey cut naanee...does absolutely nothing for me

jets acquired jeff otah today...that's a pretty good fit for that downhill power scheme you know that they're gonna roll with under sparano...provided otah hasn't eaten himself out of the league...seems like a solid get even though i don't know what the compensation was

Otah's big issue isn't weight, it's his laziness. He apparently refuses team massages and all that, which bothers the team as the gets massages elsewhere (Some place named Envy) and they are not for sports. He also has injury issues.

It was such a cheap trade though.

yeah i know he has injury issues but he looks like a man to me that if he doesn't really work at his conditioning he will balloon...what's the compensation for carolina on the trade...only thing i've heard is conditional undisclosed draft pick

I think it's a tremendously positive trade for the Jets. The issue to me has just been injuries. If he's healthy you can put up with his quirkiness because he can nail down a spot for 7 years.

yeah it looks that way on paper to me also...the jets had a hole at right tackle and i think they have to feel pretty good about acquiring one for what sounds like low level comp that fits what they want their identity on o to be about...and a still young one at that...

The Otah trade raises serious alarm bells ... there's more wrong than is public.

Carolina traded up to 19 to get him
Carolina then used the 19th pick.
He's had some health & conditioning issues, but to just throw your LT in the garbage is unprecedented unless he can't/won't play.

Rex & Meatball are always out to take a flier on OL. For some reason they both think they can fix them & they both have proven they can't do squat, except make poor decisions.

Have also read he's a dissension-type guy ... more flammable material for the locker room Can't wait!!

Jeff Otah's issues are well known at this point. They are what they are. He's played four games over the last two years due to injury, and the team has openly questioned how much he wants it, because he doesn't cooperate with them to the fullest in his rehab or weight.

Incidentally he was never the team's LT. He was always their RT.

Because Tony Sparano has this uncanny knack for uncovering Free Agent O-line gems, right?
