On a conference call with the media a couple hours after the game's postponement, NFL executive vice president of personnel Troy Vincent said there was never any conversation about a five-minute warmup period to resume play, as was referenced during the ESPN broadcast. "It never crossed our mind to talk about warming up to resume play," Vincent said. "That's ridiculous. That's insensitive."

What the hell was the NFL thinking?!?! The young man literally died on the field and had to be resuscitated and they tell the players they have 5 minutes to get ready to play after he is taken away. They stood there and watched this take place. What a bunch of insensitive pricks! I hope there is some sort of public lash back from the players and fans...
There will be a lot of backlash from this. Even if the NFL did everything right, there would be lots of backlash based solely on the player safety issue. Throw in the long delay to cancel the game and all the tweets from other players lambasting the NFL for it, there will most definitely be repercussions from this. Surprising to me that the NFL didn't have a protocol in place for this, as it has always been a possibility with a game this violent.

This right here...It was unacceptable how this unfolded but I actually posted that its going to happen one day and it almost happened before our eyes last night. If I could see the possibility of serious injury or death, How does the NFL leadership not see it coming?

There will be no huge backlash. The talking heads will say whatever they are going to say and then the Bills and the rest of the teams will line up and play again this coming weekend.

The game last night should have absolutely been cancelled under the circumstances but in a week the games will continue and last nights tragic incident will be relegated to the past for everyone but the player, his friends and family.

The NFL talks a lot about player safety issues but in reality the players and owners play the game because of the billions of dollars the league makes every season. It’s all about the money and every player is replaceable and that is the sad fact about the NFL.

Hopefully Hamlin will have a full recovery and go on and have a long and productive life but the NFL will continue on no matter what happens and that is just the reality of the situation.

I'm just coming in here to say: I was following this thread last night from my phone but don't have my login there, but I wanted to say that all of my prayers were with Hamlin as soon as I saw he had gone into cardiac arrest. It brought back memories of my mom who went into cardiac arrest. No mother, father, son, or daughter is ever prepared for a situation such as this one. It's frightening and the bottom just drops out of your world.

I don't want to be overly pessimistic about Hamlin's condition. My bias only knows what my mom suffered. 9 minutes is an eternity when a person goes into cardiac arrest. The most optimistic outlook is that they were able to administer, successfully, CPR and get oxygen to his brain within 2 minutes of him collapsing on the field. The brain can only survive minutes without oxygen before damage begins to occur. For that we have reason to be hopeful. If that isn't the case, there is a significant possibility that when they wake him that he may suffer some degree of brain damage, and if it's too severe then he may pass away.

I knew very little about this type of catastrophic event until it happened to a parent. It's gut-wrenching to sit in a room with a panel of specialists who are, almost unanimously, recommending that you let your loved one pass away due to the loss of quality of life and likelihood that the brain damage is permanent.

I know this is a grim post, but I saw a ton of colorful posts in this thread last night. The focus needs to be on Hamlin and his family and friends. We're not Bills, Bengals, or Dolphins here. We are all related somewhere up the human family tree. I'll continue to pray for Hamlin in the hopes that we get a report that he is awake and responding well and recognizing familiar faces.

I had a flashback of Christian Eriksen who collapsed on the football/soccer pitch at the Parken Stadium during Denmark's European Championship group game against Finland. It was scary. Eriksen has recovered and is now playing football/soccer again.
Thoughts go out to Hamlin and his family and team mates. Best scenario was it happened with the best medical emergency services right there and also local to the stadium. I wish him the best.

Anyone else find it weird these devastating injuries keep happening in Cincinnati?

Shazier, Tua, Hamlin. All same field.

Crazy coincidence.

the nfl can't say it cares much about player safety when they have an extra game of the season which further wears players down and creates a greater possibility of injury

Skip bayless did his undisputed show today by himself because Shannon wasn't on it. Shannon was like **** this guy lol and deservedly so, Skip was always a tool and I don't feel bad for him being left on his own to do the show. Had to be almost intolerable listening to him blabbing on whole time without another person's take or debate or taking time from skip talking

He really needs to be suspended for that tweet. I've tried reading them in their entirety and still think he needs a suspension from ESPN. The backlash coming at him is a tidal wave.

I work in Inteventional Radiology and our attending explained what happened. Apparently if you get hit during the T-wave rhythm, your heart is trying to “reset” and there is a depolarization issue. Getting hit during that particular rhythm is so rare that it is like winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning, and getting bit by a shark all at the same time. Craziness
