Calais Campbell to the Arizona Cardinals

No surprises clearly didn’t want to come back

Just saw an article suggesting a Dolphins/Cardinals trade down in rd. 1.

There's plenty of speculation and guesswork going on pre-draft.

What if there is a "wink wink" deal going on with the Fins and red birds ... 🤔

What if Campbell was part of the wink ... I know, I know ... HE made the decision (wink wink)

A lot of overreacting in this thread. Still have a dline with Seiler, Chop, Chubb and Phillips. Also, have a really good draft for dline talent. Put piss in your own cheerios over a 40 year old DT if you want to.

It may not be embarrassing to some, though it is to me in the sense that the organization could not offer him more than $5 million guaranteed. He's worth $10 million a year and we have it.

Whoever it is who are putting the curbs on the spending this off-season, whether Grier or Ross, et al (and there are rumors and innuendo out there that it comes from Ross and the higher ups), it's an abject failure not to re-sign him given his play last year, his leadership on the team, and how incredibly thin we are at DT. It was a no brainer to try harder than $5/7 to bring him back!

Only one of those are DTs. We have nothing beyond Sieler. It's absurd to have one bonafide DT on the team at this stage.

Sure, but why not cut Tyreek too so he could go back to a contender? At least Tyreek has been with the team more than 1 season.

Or Ramsey?

Those guys HoF’rs and play positions that don’t last long after 30.
Because cap hits. But if either one wanted to void their contract and return unearned signing bonuses I'm sure something could be worked out.

You have to remember that NFL coaches and GM’s are very very wise people. Very few people on the planet can do what they do. The fact no one can ever see the plan is actually part of the plan.
Their work is mysterious and important.

Probably low balled him on the offer knowing they were inline for a 4th round compensation pick if he refused and signed elsewhere.
I wonder how many top end players would take one year deals if the contract value was much greater than the AAV they could get in a multi-year deal? What's it worth to "buy" comp.picks in this fashion?

The signing bonus is “earned” though. The cap hit is just spread over the contract by accounting choice of the Dolphins instead of taking the full cap hit in the actual signing year.

That’s not the fault of the player.

It’s why we have things like Xavien Howard counting $15M and Kendall Fuller counting $5M in dead money in 2025.

Edit - Remember cap hit is when the team accounts for the money, not when the player actually receives the money. For example, Tua’s cap hit in 2024 was only $9.5M but he got paid in cash $49.4M by the Dolphins.

Does the signing bonus still hit the cap if the player returns it (the pro rated amount)? I know it is fantasy fiction and was being facetious--nobody is giving back signing bonus without a court order--but it does raise a curious question. We often see salary converted to signing bonuses but is the reverse also possible (if a team wanted to accelerate cap hit)?

We could not pay him enough to play for McClown and this "circus" we call a football team! Arizona is nowhere near a contender, and you would think that at 39 years old, he'd want another shot at a ring. Couple that with how desperate the Dolphins are for defensive lineman...what does that tell you?!!!
