The Dolphins have five players on D who are all over 30 in Wake, Grimes, Patterson, Soliai, and Starks. All could possibly be kept or, all five could possibly be gone. IMO, decisions on all 5 boils down to whether or not you believe our team can be a legit contender this year.

If you believe we can contend, keeping all 5 is a good idea, although a very costly one as all will likely be paid very well. Our D was good last year, and keeping the band together will almost certainly mean getting better this year with having more cohesion among players, and the new guys adapting more to schemes. I'm thinking that it would also open up Coyle's play book more.

If you do not believe we can contend this year, it does not make much sense to keep any of them. What's the point in paying them when we could use the money to get younger, develop younger players, and focus to a year or 2 ahead when we can contend.

I'm on the fence here. Can anyone push me to one side or the other? :idk:

Too bad we have to spend so much on a not-so-special WR...Thanks Ireland!

We'll have 3 soon (Wake, Grimes, Soliai). As long as the mindset is to add young talent, we'll be fine.

I don't see the Wallace contract coming into play here. It's a question of the team being able to contend, and what Hickey believes. This is gonna make a Big difference in how we approach signing our own, and what we do in FA.

Wake isn't going anywhere, and Grimes needs to be brought back even if it is just one more year on the franchise tag.

I could see them going either way on Patterson, but he could be back on a restructured. He could be gone because they do have two young cornerbacks in Taylor and Davis waiting in the wings. Sure they didn't do much in 2013, but they still have talent and will become part of the equation.

As for Soliai and Starks, you bring back just one of them, and I strongly believe that one will be Soliai. He will be cheaper and we already have a DT replacement in Odrick.

I would say at least 3 of those 5 will be back.

Aging D?

Cap issues?

Huh?

You don't want to have a number of starters who are all over 30 unless you believe you can contend, when nothing else matters and you take your run for better or worse.

Otherwise, chances are that the productivity from all will diminish at the same time and you have to do a big rebuild. Consider that if we would have kept Dansby and Burnett, we would have had 7 starters on D over 30, and all making a lot of money. Not something you want to go 7-9 or 8-8.

i don't think we'd be wise to let our best players go. if you take away Wake, Grimes, Starks and Soliai, this defense is basically dead. i'm leaving out Patterson on purpose, since he's having a hard time staying healthy. so unless you want to start from square one, bringing back two out of Grimes, Starks and Soliai is imperative. Wake is under contract anyway. i'd prefer to build around our good players, not the scrap heap you have when you take them away.

Do you believe we can contend with them?

Yes, I think Wake, Grimes and Soliai are part of the formula if we want to contend. Take them away and we have no chance.

Don't agree on Solai but the other two are must keep at this point.

You don't build around 30 year old players, other than a franchise QB. However, you do keep them if you believe we can contend. There is no reason to keep them if it's only another year of waiting until next year when they will be a year older.

Keeping Soliai at least lets Miami hold off having to take a DT high in the draft. The Dolphins need as many resources as possible this offseason to fix the offensive line.

We only have 5 weeks until free agency begins. With all of the unsigned players we have, our FO better get to work. I'm surprised we haven't heard of any signings yet.

Hickey may decide to not sign anyone. This would not surprise me.
