Can Phins Contend in 2014 & Aging D Cap Questions?

Hickey may decide to not sign anyone. This would not surprise me.

Well I think the coaching staff will have a lot of input on re-signing players. Hickey cant make that call without consulting the coaches. He's probably focused on getting caught up with the draft, but I expect some signing soon.

The only way that the Dolphins will contend in the AFC East is if they managed to get some steller rookie talent.

Philbin is not going to inspire the players or out-scheme Bill Billichecks team it just is not going to happen.

He needs to have clearly more talented players in order to beat any other good coach.

He may be able to make the team more disciplined but that isn't enough to get to the playoffs.

Maybe Lazer will make a difference and get the most of the talent on offense?

Keeping Soliai at least lets Miami hold off having to take a DT high in the draft. The Dolphins need as many resources as possible this offseason to fix the offensive line.

We need 3 DT's for a rotation, not two.

I'm sure they will but, Hickey has the final say. IF he is focused on the draft in April as opposed to FA next month, he should be tarred, feathered, and fired. No way that happens.

You don't build around 30 year old players, other than a franchise QB. However, you do keep them if you believe we can contend. There is no reason to keep them if it's only another year of waiting until next year when they will be a year older.

You don't necessarily build around 30-something year old players but you keep them around for a year or two while your younger players get their feet wet, so to speak.

Between Soliai and Starks, Soliai would be the more difficult to replace because of his ability to take on multiple blockers. Odrick can do many of the things Starks can do so Randy would not be missed as much.

Grimes is just too good at this point to do anything but resign, IMO. Jamar Taylor and Will Davis have to step up their game and be the contributors they were drafted to be so we can release Patterson without much of a drop off playmaking wise.

You don't want to have a number of starters who are all over 30 unless you believe you can contend, when nothing else matters and you take your run for better or worse.

Otherwise, chances are that the productivity from all will diminish at the same time and you have to do a big rebuild. Consider that if we would have kept Dansby and Burnett, we would have had 7 starters on D over 30, and all making a lot of money. Not something you want to go 7-9 or 8-8.

However, I see potential starters waiting to get the call. I do not see age as an issue.

I agree that Joe and Hickey do not value many of the current FA's.

I would think that they would value Clemons, as a solid S who is the QB of the secondary, higher than Starks, Soliai, and Patterson. NOT money wise but, team value wise.

Wake isn't going anywhere....this offseason and he has his potential replacement on the team (Jordan)

Grimes is a mystery....he played great and seems to have a lot left in the tank, but he is over 30 and will want a pretty decent contract. Even if the Dolphins are cap sound I don't think breaking the bank for a 30 CB is a smart move.

Starks and Soliai....at times I feel like the Phins need to keep one and others I just want them to move on and find guys who can give middle pressure on a consistent basis.

Patterson...often injured and pricey....time to let that one go...

In the end...the team has too many holes on both sides of the ball that need to be filled and it will take more then one offseason to make all those moves.

Completely disagree. The draft is a mystery, requires investigating and a lot of resources. Free agency is pretty easy compared to the draft.

OK but, naming them would be a good thing?

Shelby 24
Odrick 26
Jordan 23
OV 23
Misi 27
Jenkins 21
Jones 25
Taylor 23
Davis 23
Ellerbe 28

Some of these guys already start or have the potential to help as such. Plus, add a draft this year, I do not think age is an issue going forward. The Steelers? That is an age issue.

For argument's sake, our D was pretty good, with Ellerbe, Wheeler, and Jones playing terrible and Wake having somewhat of an off year. Keeping everyone together "could" make them special with adding in Jordan. Is it worth the risk?

There is not a single player there who anyone here can project to be a star, and as of now, not even sure most will still be with the team in the future.

They are no where near special...no middle pressure, below Avg. MLB and an awful OLB...it is not worth the risk...
