CNN'S Twist on Martins sister

I am still trying to figure out how some of you guys can't distinguish "jokes" from real actions.

Do I condone gang rape? HELL NO! Do I condone a person THREATENING gang rape on another's family member? HELL NO! But I can see the difference between a THREAT, and a JOKE. When we as a society start to blur the lines between language that is THREATENING and language that is in JEST, we are working toward eliminating our freedom of expression and free speech. It's a move toward censorship. And ultimately, that will end in real VALUABLE speech being suppressed as well if certain people in authority can quell ALL speech.

The good comes with the bad when it comes to protecting free speech. If we want to protect our freedoms from oppression, we must also protect language that we are uncomfortable with, so long as the language isn't a DIRECT THREAT or could cause BODILY HARM (ie,. yelling fire in a theatre)

Now, it is entirely possible that Martin was uncomfortable with this. And if he was, and he approached others to stop this, and they did nothing, or they laughed in his face, or continued to direct vile insults in his direction, I would be FULL ONBOARD Team Martin. But from everything I can gather, not only did he not approach anyone about his discomfort, he JOINED IN. And then he can run off and claim he was harassed after the fact seeking a payday? How could anyone be comfortable with that?

I am not condoning Incognito. I have already said it was despicable if the Dolphins organization covered up his sexual harassment of a female volunteer. He is a creep if all that is true. But none of that exonorates Martin of this farcical, media-fueled legal fight. He had a many opportunities to handle this appropriate way, and he chose to do this in the worst way possible and hurt MANY completely innocent people in the organization as a result.

sorry, I joke with some of my friends about similar things usually involving their mom. they in turn joke about my mom, and at no point do I feel bullied or feel the need to think they are serious.

Is that what real men do?... threaten to rape women. I'm 53 years old and I've never in my life felt the need to make a statement like that. When I played football I never heard anything like that on the field nor in the locker room. Bottom line, boys: real men don't rape women nor do they threaten to rape women. Even in jest it's disgusting. And anyone here who thinks they kind of crap is okay should spend a bit of time thinking about that while they watch their daughters playing in the yard. The crassness and stupidity around here is off the charts this past week. Show a little respect for yourselves.

LOL, you fell into this spin as well. There were a bunch of dudes goofing off and now its threatening to rape someone. Eh boy!!!

Nah dude I can honestly say I have never threatened or been part of a bunch of guys that have threatened to gang rape "my friends" sister!
Mom yes, sister no.

BTW; What kind of grown ass man allows this to happen if he takes it seriously?

Run train = gang raping. Like what the Notre Dame football team did to that girl that killed herself.

Yeah but they were serious. We were just F***ing around. Now people are acting as if there was a plot to actually carry through with it. Get serious!! Yes, Cogs is a scumbag and I do not want him or Martin back on this team but this media s**t is ridiculous!!

Very well said!

I agree most men myself included are fighting. However the players on this team appear to be a bit detached from reality.

The players are fine because they understand the context.

I'm not saying what RI did, if he did dance up on some worker without her consent was
right.....I'm just saying in the big picture, if we are going to point to this as the
source of dysfunction, we DO have players on ESPN who have done FAR worse.

Dance up on her? He knocked glasses off her head with a golf club and battered her private parts with it then dumped his water battle on her face! If Incognito was a private citizen he gets rung on multiple felonies!

This times one million. I am about as alpha as it gets and I have never felt the need or even wanted to make a statement like that. The problem here is that the Dolphins locker room and this bulletin board appears to be populated by a number of people who have never progressed emotionally from being fourteen years old into being responsible adults. Responsible adults don't joke about serious topics like the potential rape of a friend's sister.

Is that what happened? Yeah, that's not cool. But again, that's pretty minor and stinks of yellow journalism.
We have players that have engaged in some of the most malicious and damning behavior
around, and they STILL get adulation, and adoration.

I'll put it this way; A grown person has recourse. A dog has no recourse.
Funny how ALL OF A SUDDEN all this stuff pops up.

Meanwhile, we have teams where a dude KILLED a guy, and nobody's
really blaming anybody.

If they meant it, it would be a serious issue.

It perpetuates a culture in this country that needs to be eradicated. High school girls get raped and we have school districts covering it up because the rapist is a football player. Women get raped in the military and their commanding officers sweep it under the rug. Women get raped every day in this country and as a society we are far too quick to blame the women ..."it's how that acted" ..."it's how they dressed." This happens all the time. And don't, for a second think I don't know that sometimes those accusations are unfounded. I know some are. I'm speaking about those cases where there is clear evidence that a violent act occurred and that a rape was committed. Far too many women are afraid to even to report it these days because they don't trust law enforcement to be on their side.

Anyone that has been around Alpha-males would understand if someone was going to do that for real, they wouldn't talk about it.

Are you suggesting that Alpha-males never commit rape? Ridiculous.

I've spent a good part of my career around Alpha-males. For the past 10 years or so, I've shared a workspace with a guy who's the epitome of an Alpha-male. We're good friends both inside and outside of work and I've never heard him or anyone else ever say anything approaching the stuff you guys are defending. As a matter of fact, I'd bet my paycheck that if someone went there in front of him, he'd have the same reaction I'd have.

Being an Alpha-male doesn't come with a requirement to be crude and vulgar. That's a characteristic cretins take on for themselves. Let's not paint the whole group with that brush.

In my experience, it's the quiets ones you need to worry about.

You're implying that people who think rape is funny are less dangerous than those with the moral clarity to not joke about an issue so serious. That's monumentally ridiculous.

Goon, yes we do have teams where a guy has killed someone. The Miami Dolphins. See: Wilson, Jimmy. So yeah, perspective.

And for the record, I don't want Jimmy Wilson on this team either.

Dance up on her? He knocked glasses off her head with a golf club and battered her private parts with it then dumped his water battle on her face! If Incognito was a private citizen he gets rung on multiple felonies!

Erm, I've seen incidents where people did worse and were not charged with felony conduct.

I think people who are acting like Richie Incognito is Al Capone are kind of being as silly as people acting like Richie Incognito is a stand up man and a good guy. The truth is that he is a jerk, and a putz, and probably a drug addict (alcohol). Which means that, unfortunately, he is not-atypical NFL player.

I believe that the team's decision to part ways with Richie (which they have said to anyone who will listen off the record) is the right one. And I wish they had done it sooner. And I hope there will be changes within the organization as a result of this mess.

But this thing is going into bizarro world now and I think the two main camps on this board ("free Richie" and "Richie equals Hitler") are heading off into cuckoo clock territory.
