Coaching Question on Dallas Thomas?

hoops made the comparison I planned to make, to Egnew. Very similar. Disaster as a rookie who will probably improve a year later but still not what you are looking for.

This wasn't a case of poor technique. Thomas was overwhelmed in all areas. He was out there from the opening exhibition against Dallas so I don't see how injury is a valid attachment. He played too high, was beaten immediately off the snap, and my primary vision is of him chasing the guy who just flashed beyond him.

If anything, Thomas looked weaker than Egnew in terms of functional strength required for his position. That's scary.

The good news for Thomas is that mediocre guards have a place in this league. They have cover on both sides. A tight end can't be pathetic and nobody notice. Guards are like minor league golfers who can stick around and get one opportunity after another for a ticket to the big leagues. The last guard on your roster is often one of the worst players on the team. If they get cut, another team is willing to use them for cheap filler. That's how a Mathis can hang around and develop.

I see Albert, Pouncey, and Zack Martin being the stalworts of our O-line, with the ability to plug in some mediocre/developmental interior lineman. With BA and Z. Martin at tackle, we could hide some deficiencies while players like Dallas Thomas gain experience and skill.

-This is assuming we draft Z. Martin at 19 if available

I just wish some people would wait a while before naming a first year player a bust. We have had so many players in recent memory that looked lost until their 3rd year. Paul soali was a bust until year 3 or 4 when he was a pro bowler. Charles clay broke out 3 years in. Hartline same thing. Rashard Jones etc.

Patience is a virtue that Miami fans have forgotten through these past 10-15 years. DT was a third round guy. He was injured and needed a year getting physically stronger. I was not surprised that he didn't put out much last year.

I think the majority of fans are already writing off last years draft picks as busts far to soon. Our entire draft class from last year was essentially red shirted. Its this year that I am expecting contributions from Jordan, Taylor, Sims & Thomas. If those four guys can come in and contribute this year, we are going to be better than most people think.

Not being able to lift weights or work on the fundamentals for 4-6 months will cause a player to lose functional strength.
