The story of the day was the running backs and the forty yard dash. Ronnie Brown was reported to have unofficially ran as low as 4.32 on his second try after running a 4.40 on his first run, but the official time was 4.48. DeAndra Cobb of Michigan State ran the third fastest time with a 4.49. The fastest runner in this group was Cal's JJ Arrington who turned in a 4.46. The disappointment of the day was Maurice Clarrett who turned in a 4.82 on his first run and a 4.72 on his second. Ryan Grant turned in a solid time of 4.54 which Wisconsin's Anthony Davis matched. Nehemiah Broughton was unofficially timed at 4.48 as his fastest time, we will try to have his official time soon.
For the linemen, the impressive times came from Evan Mathis who ran 4.97 and Khalif Barnes ran a 5.1. Richie Incognito ran a 4.90 but sprained his knee and did not finish today. Elton Brown went home with an injury and did not work out, Alex Barron didn't run but did post a 35" vertical.
The defensive end weigh-ins were interesting today. Shawne Merriman was the most impressive player to come though. He came in at 6'4, 272 and was very cut. He looks like he could easily add 10-15 more lbs and had very little body fat. His stock is soaring right now. Some teams even feel he could line up at middle linebacker. Dan Cody was affected by a sinus infection he had last week and showed up at a light 255. He said the infection cost him about 10 lbs. Cody was advised not to run by his agent and willl not participate in workouts here. David Pollack joked that he's been sleeping upside down to try to stretch his frame out. He measured in at 6'2, 255. "I guess it didn't work," he said.
Jonathan Babineaux came in at 286, although he said some teams want him lighter and some teams want him heavier. The interesting part is that some teams, including the Saints even want to try him at linebacker.
Cedrick Houston has met with the Titans, Browns, Packers, Giants and Bengals.
An interesting name to look for is Tennessee Tech OT Frank Omiyale. He ran a 4.7 in the shuttle and did 22 reps on the bench. Some teams have talked to him about possibly playing guard. He's interviewed with 10 teams including the Bears, Titans, Chiefs and Jaguars.
The two Central Michigan linemen continue to impress. Adam Kieft posted a 33" vertical and Eric Ghiaciuc turned in a 5.11 forty. Kieft did have a bit of a disappointing 40 time of 5.5, but teams are still high on him.
South Carolina DE George Gause came in bigger at 275. He has met with the Vikings, Jaguars, Packers, Cowboys and Chiefs.
Shaun Cody missed his lift because he was stuck at the hospital, but will do a makeup lift tomorrow. He has talked to the Chargers, Cowboys, and Vikings.
