Commentary: Supplemental Draft: Wright or Wrong?

He has shown signs of underachievement on the football field, and there have been accusations before that he would be the type of player to take plays off, especially if he had a significant starting role.

As for figuring out whether or not he's good as a 1-technique DT, I would think that's rather obvious. He's 6'6" and plays mostly around the 310 pound area. His strengths are his footspeed and athleticism. His weakness is his upper body strength. Saying we don't know if he'd be a good 1-technique DT because we've only seen him at 3-technique to me is like saying we don't know if Jason Taylor would make a good middle linebacker because we haven't seen him there yet.

I wonder if there were any private meetings between Wright and the Dolphins we don't know about.

Chances are there have been.

great read. i wouldn't give no more than a 5th or 6th for this guy if any at all.
had a horrible workout, iwas hoping for him to tear it up and us pick him up, but very dissapointing. :shakeno:

This sounds far-fetched and i apologize, but with miami's past interest level in Wright being the highest, many teams might assume we would be front-runners for selecting him. Now in one of saban's meetings with wright, he convinces wright that miami is where his career needs to begin. He promises a decent contract and the all-important PT. He then convinces wright to blow his workout, and stages miami's personal walk-out to make teams think we, the front-runners, are no longer interested. Then teams (i.e. Philadelphia) don't need to invest a 2nd round pick to get him and Miami comes in under the radar and scoops him with a 3rd/4th...

I know everyone here hates speculation, and I'm sorry... just kinda bored and this thought struck me. What do you guys think?

Not as obvious, because my understanding is he plays with good leveage so I don't know if he can't play the 1 spot. I think the height thing is blownup too much because most OL will be shorter than him and he's made a impact, so he must be playing with some kind of leverage..He has potential...does he have the work ethnic to get there...that's seem to be mixed reviews..his trainer, yea the guy works everyday and does everything..the workout suggest he doesn't..

played high school football at Poly High School in Long Beach along with several other top-rated USC prospects... three-technique defensive tackle with first-round ability, but has not always played at that level... needs to make better use of his hands to get off blocks... plays with good balance and lateral quickness for a player of his size... shows good ball recognition... takes off a few downs here and there... said to be a coachable guy with solid motor on the field... talent level falls somewhere between Albert Haynesworth (Tennessee) and Marquise Hill (New England)...

All in all he's an unknown with maybe good upside..who's knows, the whole draft thing is a crapshoot, if you ask me.

I would say any higher than a fourth and were making a mistake. I watched him play with Cody and that excellent D-Line out in Southern Cal and he played well he really did. The combines made him look bad and his weakness was just depressing. Cut to the chase hes a good player but really should go 4th or 5th and someone else possibly philly who have had deeper drafts as of late can afford to take the risk on him we cant.

I wouldn't honestly give up more then a 7th. The supplemental draft has turned out a high degree of busts. In fact outside of Jamal there's been no good players selected in like 10 years. The bust rate is above 90%. That's just too hard to ignore especially when he's got enough issues to make him slide right out of a normal draft.

Playing with good leverage can mean penetrating or staying put. To me, the guy is clearly a penetrator...which isn't really what you need out of a nose tackle. A nose tackle isn't going to take on two interior linemen and move straight forward penetrating...he risks getting moved to the side which would be disastrous against the run.

Like I said when a guy can penetrate like he does, you don't put him at the 1-gap, that would be like putting a great receiving tight end at fullback.

I still think he's worth taking, although probably earliest being the 3rd round. Running under 5.0 at 6-6 329 is very impressive. Plus, I disagree that strength can't be drastically improved and the lazy rap doesn't seem to fit either if he entered USC weighing 365. His 16 reps is a concern, but not alarming. The sky really is the limit with this kid and I wouldn't be scared off by one workout.

Actually, it fits perfectly if he struggles to maintain his weight, which has been reported before about him. He played high school at lower than 300 pounds, ballooned up to 365 going into his freshman year, and first thing they ask him to do is get down to 300 pounds? The guy has trouble keeping in shape, and the fact that he worked out at 329 pounds instead of 310 pounds supports the theory that he was out of shape at his workout.
