Could The Dolphins OL Be Worse This Year?

I'm glad you did some research before starting this thread but the question you posed had been asked several times over the past week and I think people are just tired of trying to answer it.

That's the thing that's make this so frustrating. I think some people want the OL fixed yesterday but it is not going to happen. Sure it would be great to have the OL settled before the draft but how realistic was that? I would prefer for Hickey/Philbin/Benton to take their time to get it right than just sign what is available and not fit what they are trying to do scheme wise. Yes it is a risk to rely on two rookie players on the OL but it has worked out for the Dolphins once before and with the right players could happen again. :up:

I seriously doubt that we will see a Webb and Sims repeat. It's a totally different game with top "cream of the crop" guys failing on the OL. I guess we can all hope, and have patience for that to happen. I'm more realistic.

No, simple answer being Benton is the best I'm the business. Show me a bad line he ever coached. You can't and he almost always has a 1000 yard rb because of how good his line is. And we already have a better tackle then we had all of last year in Albert. We still have our great center and we have potential in Brenner and Smith. We aren't done yet either. What if we get Donald Penn and Zac Martin. It's to early to have a solid answer but Benton to me is evidence we won't be worse. Our coach last year was concerned with being friends and not a good coach

Not at all, I think I'm one of the more optimistic posters on this forum, even giving Wheeler a second chance. lol

With the talent left in FA, and our draft, you tell me of the 2 or 3 players on the OL who will be better than what we had in pass protect?

Just off the top of my head, Zach Martin or Xavier Su'A-Filo at LG with either Michael Schofield or Billy Turner at RT. Either of those would be an upgrade over what he finished the year with on the OL.

im getting sick of hearing people put blame on coaches for how a team does. Benton may well be a good OL coach, but that's probably because he has good players to work with. Last year we had Martin, Cogs, Pouncey, Jerry, Clabo. This year, as of right now, we have Albert, Smith, Pouncey, Jerry, Clabo. I for one think Sam Brenner has potential, and with the addition of an elite pass blocker like Albert, we are bound to help Tannehill much more. Adding Smith, whom I think will start, will help even more. Pouncey being back in action is a big plus. Adding an RT or RG in the 1st round like Zach Martin, is going to increase too. Having Benton here, its pretty obvious we will be drafting OL often in this draft, so I cant imagine our OL being worse. Not 58 sacks, maybe 30.

just wait, our first 2 picks will be OL. At #19, we may well trade backwards and get an early 2nd rounder. We get us an RG and RT for the next 10 years.

Penn was as bad as we had in pass protect giving up 12 sacks, 6 hits, and 28 hurries, and no one knows if Martin will be available or any good.

In FA I think Daryn Colledge offers similar ability to Jerry as a pass protector. Wade Smith would also be better than John Jerry. My concern is probably RT, I think we're going to have improved guard play. Davin Joseph is another guy I'd consider an upgrade over Jerry...I think with connections to those 3 we will land one. Tackle I'm probably looking at Ryan Harris at this point...played under Benton as well but I think we'll have a rookie RT this year.

Here's what I'm hoping for, That Albert plays 16 games at a probowl level and giving us a vet to lead this line into the future 80% chance of happening. I hope Smith is put at LG where under the tutelage of our new line coach flourishes, chance of happening 70%. Pouncey grows up and moves forward as a very good center, 90%. At RG, find a player in the draft who can play this spot from day one. Where we draft this player I'm indifferent too. This may be swapped with LG because Smith is put at RG. If we can sign a FA to play RG or RT I think we still need to address the line with late draft picks. I think a 4th round guard and a 5th-6th round Right Tackle prospect is a smart game plan moving forward. That's with us even spending a high pick on a guard or a tackle. With this scenario there is risk of being as bad or worse but I think the chances are we will have a better line, first because the focus is going to be on the line but also I think we have upgraded the coaching at this position more than anything else on our team.

If you are looking for guarantees you won't get any from me. Whether it be free agency or the draft, you have to trust your ability to evaluate and hope things work out for you.

I remember hearing how much Chicago's offense was going to suffer if they start two rookies along the OL. While they did struggle at times, they did not hamper the Bears offense as much as Miami's makeshift OL did.
