Coyle trying to inject emotion and enthusiasm into defense

Didn't you know there's a conference every year where up and coming NFL reporters are told that the way to fame and fortune in the business is to bash the Dolphins?

Mind blowing, though the signs have been there for years. I mean, theres been photographic evidence of where they hold the conference:

Obvious in hindsight.

It's certainly helps that the crowd there has always been one of the loudest even before the new stadium.

Seattle's fans are known as the loudest in the NFL, so much so that the league instituted a noise rule in 1985. Despite the rule, the 12th MAN continued the tradition, giving the Seahawks a home field advantage to this day.

Maybe it is the rain :idk:
I spent a couple weeks there and it did not get dark until around 9:30 at night. I felt like screaming as well from lack of sleep. Did I mention they sell coffee and expresso on every street corner ?
Everyone is already wired when they get to the game.

The rule change(which, from what ive found, was made in '89?) were in response to a plethora of incidents, not the least of which occurred in Miami. Every few months someone starts a thread with the video of the '85 Bears game of the crowd disrupting it, but another noteworthy incident happened in '81 with the Eagles.

Visiting teams have long struggled with noise. The former quarterback Ron Jaworski remembered a game at the Orange Bowl in Miami in 1981 that was so loud, he turned repeatedly to the referee for help.

“He finally said, ‘Run the play, Ron, or we’ll never get out of here,’ ” said Jaworski, who played 15 N.F.L. seasons, mostly with the Philadelphia Eagles.

As Walrus pointed out, Seattle was able to recognize and galvanize the effort before most. The Bills and Colts jumped on board as well and inducted the "12th man" into their Ring of Honors. And, of course, the trademark belongs to Texas A&M despite the fact they were half a decade late to the party but were savvy enough to lock it down. I can only imagine how infuriating that is to the Seahawks.

I can see the appeal of playing up the coffee angle to fans on the way to a game(and as an addicted coffee drinker it sounds like heaven to me, ensuing insomnia would be worth it). That said, im reminded of Jacksonville's attempts to get people riled up for games last year:

Jacksonville Jaguars ✔ @jaguars
2 free drinks for next 2 hrs w/ #INDvsJAX ticket purchase(starting @$45, 21+ for beer). #DrinksOnUs from @BudLight: http://bit.ly/1dJo6VG

Some might say this year's version of the Jaguars would drive its fans to drink. It's nice that the organization is encouraging you to do just that.

Vastly superior.

Because the fans feel like they can affect the outcome of the game by being loud, which the Seahawks as an organization play up (retiring #12 in honor of the fans) and so on. Dolphins fans don't feel that way (anymore) because the facility doesn't afford them the opportunity.

no doubt...miamis a little more spoiled than seattle is also with alternative things to do and the weather etc...

I was already slightly perturbed that we didn't draft a QB but knowing this makes me angry.

ha ha la canfora is credible i take it

this is the same clown that also dropped the mike wallace is on the trade block crap...

You ever notice teams that constantly don't win never have a worthy 12th man

Yes, and why are Seattle fans so much louder than the rest of the leagues fans? Do they inherently love their team more? Does the constant rain have an effect on their lungs that somehow manifests into louder and longer screams? Or could it simply be because the owner spent money into making it a loud stadium?

...na, clearly the lungs mutation. Michael Phelps is legion in Seattle. Good teams dont require an mutant army fanbase, they are just good period, which is why some teams dont hover around a .500 record every single year. Understandably confusing for Dolphins fans though.

If you can successfully convince me that Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith, and Joe Flacco are among the best quarterbacks in the league, i willl immediately eat crow and admit coaching has no effect whatsoever on the roster and teams are only as successful as the talent on them. Good luck.

In any case, your not going to hear me suggest the talent in here wasnt lacking. I suggested as much earlier with the "Ireland is atrocious" mention. But again, that doesnt excuse Philbin. We are a bad team, but we have enough talent to defeat the 6-10 Thaddeus Lewis lead Bills at least once. Our general manager deserves every ounce of criticism for how our roster is. But Philbin didnt even come close to using his resources in the best way possible. Ireland didnt force Wallace to sit in one spot all year. Ireland didnt dismiss the idea of playing Dion Jordan at linebacker. Philbin made those decisions. Im looking forward to seeing who you pin those decisions on though, should earn a chuckle. My guess: Heat fans.

And i happily provided the link in my other post, but i love the suggestion that the consideration could never have happened because it is to absurd. I mean, a head coach trying to keep his job by throwing others under the bus? Perish the thought! Has never happened and will never happened!

I'll correct the lazy term of "hovers in the background": Philbin is "totally absent". Much better. Sounds legit.

it's absurd to bench the only qb worth a damn in the building for hot garbage but if you can't see it i can't help you...the league would laugh at miami for that kind of decision...yeah this head coach was so considering benching it's qb and was telling potential gm candidates that that they didn't even draft one when they had 7 rounds of picks to do so and the closest competition in house has been a career backup nor did they explore any vet free agents at the position...use your brain spesh...

The Dolphins scoring defense under Coyle is ranked fifth with only Seattle, San Fran, Cincy and Carolina ranked ahead of us. .

I agree with your point. But, that ranking was with a huge double team demanding DT/NT in the middle blowing up offensive lines and freeing up the rest of our undersized DL and LB to fly to a spot and make the stop.

Without Paul Soliai, who was immediately snatched up by his old Defensive Coordinator for big bucks in Atlanta, we are a different tem. The offense can double team whomever they want because nobody on our tem can consistently dominate a single team block. Paul was the Incredible Hulk that let our team of Flashes make plays.

I think there is a lot of reason to be excited about our defense. Lots of additions in the secondary. More depth. Health and experience for CB's Taylor and Davis as well as DE Jordan. But, all w have now are gap penetrators. Nobody on our defense is stout at the point of attack.

People saying Starks rated well don't understand that the reason was because he was constantly single teamed. Soliai forced the double team. This year, Starks will face a lot more double teams.

People saying the same thing about Mitchell are ignoring the fact that JJ Watt commanded a double team more often than Mitchell. Same problem ... nobody on our DL commands the double team, so the offense will simply select who to taken out of the play each play ... and they will succeed.

Our scoring defense was solid but u cannot ignore the yards being given up that lead to these scores.
We were 8th in scoring defense last year but was 21st in yardage given up both seasons
we were not good against the run last year and that may not change much this year with the LB corp and the change at DT
The defense has not improved under Coyle and the run defense has got worse. The pass defense is better but we went from an elite run defense to being average at best

To me it's a tiered system, and the guy at the top is Belichick. Alone. And it's not that close.

The next group after that is Jim Harbaugh and perennially underrated Marvin Lewis (no coaching staff in the league has turned around more ****heads than Lewis'). The next group after that would be Sean Payton, Rex Ryan (shoot me, I know) and Pete Carroll. After that is a large level of above average guys like John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin, Jeff Fisher, Andy Reid, Mike McCarthy and Tom Coughlin. After that is a bunch of :idk:.

I'm a stats guy and I'm trying to create THE WORLDS FIRST coaches rating system and a lot of your subjective observations matchup with the results of my formula, even Rex Ryan (who I also thought belongs in that tier even before seeing the stats). Marvin Lewis is in the same tier as Ryan and the others overall but lately he's been one of the best according to my stat. Belichick had an incredible run for a time but he's fallen off slightly as of late, him and Jim Harbaugh are essentially tied for top spot. Sean Payton is at the top of the next level and its interesting to see the stark drop off the season he was suspended.

Mike Tomlin still has a decent rating overall but he's in a downward spiral and if he doesn't do something he's a goner. Mike Smith's rating was horrible last season and often a coach is fired right after a performance like that. Look for the Falcons to be bad this season with an intermittent head coach.

My work is incomplete but right now Jeff Fisher (Rams) is the worst of everybody with Mike Shanahan (Redskins) next then Jason Garrett then Tony Sparano then Jim Schwartz.

Oh and for me elite, like with the QBs, means he can go to any team in the league and turn it into a contender almost immediately. I think Jim Harbaugh would win 10 games with any team in the league as they are right now. I believe Belichick could do it also but maybe not as quickly.

I would double Wake... Just sayin

coaches rating system...sounds like time well spent

If I lived in Vegas I would plunk down everything I was allowed to bet the under on the Rams, I think they limit the wager to only a few thousand so it doesn't make sense to fly there from eastern Canada but if I could bet 20 or 40 grand I would fly out. So in that respect it could be worth its weight in gold.

Besides, its probably a little more productive than all the time I waste [STRIKE]arguing[/STRIKE] debating with other Dolphin fans.

Good luck with the system. I'll be interested to look at your results and a description of your methodology once you're done.

I think Jeff Fisher is a good coach, however, so we'll have to disagree about that.

I would double Wake... Just sayin

Wake is a DE so you would only double him if the play were going to him or around end. Otherwise, there is no need. But Soliai would crush any inside run without a double team.

If you force the offense to always run wide, that will be a major problem for most running teams. They tend to make the runs up the middle their bread and butter.
And while Wake is a monster in the pass rush, he can be handled by one blocker usually on run plays. He isn't that big and nowhere near as strong as Soliai.
