Dallas Thomas was hurt In training camp last year

Yeah, I just posted that he was very good for us here in Knoxville in college. I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get a lot better this year. He may not, but you really can't write him off yet this year.

Maybe I was not fully attentive but I can't recall much being said about this last season. Ireland seems to have had a strange fascination for drafting injured players. Dion Jordan (1st round - shoulder), Jamar Taylor (2nd round - groin) and Dallas Thomas (3rd round - shoulder) were all coming back from serious injuries and our other 3rd rounder, Will Davis was pretty obviously insufficiently physically developed and needed to build up to compete at NFL level. I can understand taking a gamble on one and having a longer time schedule for recovery but gambling on all 4 seems pretty ridiculous.
If all are fully healthy and strong, they could all be contributors. Why would Ireland gamble on all of them?
I was also surprised when the interviewer referred to Thomas as a top 50 Draft pick before the labrum injury. I didn't know that he was rated anywhere near that highly. That's up there in the Jonathan Martin 2nd round rating.
His play was just as good as Jonathan martin last year. That says alot! Both look weak, slow, and don't know how to block.

This guy is a perfect fit at OG. Stick him there and be done with it. Jeeez!

No it wasn't. Thomas was worse than Martin against 1st stringers while he was facing 3rd stringers who spend the season unemployed.

Kind of helps explain it for me at least a little bit now. I thought maybe the moving him around messed with his head or something. I'm here in Knoxville and us Vols fans all thought of him as a monster on our Oline at either Tackle or Guard, but he seemed best at guard. He was great here even did real well against teams like Alabama. I think a lot of us here were surprised he couldn't get playing time on the phin's Oline last year. I'm not giving up on him yet.

Ding ding ding we have a winner.

Coach Philbin on Dallas Thomas

- When asked whether offensive lineman Dallas Thomas is a guard or tackle, Philbin said “that’s a good question.” He said he’s looking at right tackle or either guard spot for Thomas, who was a third-round pick last year but couldn’t earn a spot in the rotation.

“We’ve got to find him a new home, give him a place to kind of anchor down a little bit and get himself comfortable with,” Philbin said. “He’s been one of the hardest working guys. He’s been in a lot, virtually hasn’t had anytime off. He was up in the offices last week, he looked good. I just think it’s a matter of consistency, gaining the trust and confidence in himself, the guy next to him, the staff. I really like what he’s doing so far in the offseason.”

Anybody follow him in college? How did he perform there?

I watched a bunch of his college stuff. I thought he played well. Much more a technician than a physical talent. Excellent angles and good functional strength, but the type where you're worried he's maxed out.

I talked him up after the draft and was shocked and embarrassed at how bad he played. Hopefully he can turn it around.

he had the same operation as Jordan and was then stuck at LT then when that failed RT ... the guy is clearly a guard

Well Jordan was injured too which is part of why the coaches didn't play him a lot they wanted him to be able to practice and learn his assignments on the field
