Dave Wannstedt's Quaterbacks, if you want to call them that

You know, I actually do think it was intentional and not circumstance that Wanny used lousy QB's. His approach to offense was mindnumbingly conservative and I think his preferred quarterback is of the Trent Dilfer caretaker mode. A top tier QB could never have been satisfied in that offense and the last thing Wanny wanted was a power struggle. I think Wanny was a coach who had a very clear philosophy and "system" (or lack thereof) that supported it. He wasn't the kind of guy that would adapt things based on the talent he had or go after guys that weren't necessarrily suited to his style, even if they were the most talented. Scary he was allowed to coach in the NFL for so long.

This is probably the best answer yet, it's actually the only one that makes sense because I can't think of any other reason why he liked to use subpar QB's besides Wanny just being stupid.

Hey, didn't he kinda chase Marino into retirement? It's been a while but I do remember somekind of controversy between the two when he got hired as the Head Coach.

Kramer and Harbaugh were probably Wanny's best QBs....which doesnt say a whole lot. You can't really give him any credit for Harbaugh though...he inherited Harbaugh and only used him for 1 season before Jim left for Indy. (where he was fairly decent)

As for why he seemed to always favor lower quality QBs..... I think he just didnt care how good the QB was. I think in his mind the main reason for a QB's existence is to give the ball to the RB. A below avg QB can do that just as well as a Dan Marino or John Elway, and for a lot less money.

Has anybody ever wonder why Wannstedt seem to have a aversion towards quality QB's?

These were his QB's in Chicago:

Erik Kramer
Dave Krieg
Steve Walsh
Jim Harbaugh
Steve Stenstrom
Rick Mirer

And in Miami:

Jay Fielder
Ray Lucas
Brian Griese
A.J. Feeley

In 12 years as a head coach the best QB that Wannstedt could come up with was probably Dave Krieg and he was 38 and at the end of his career.

It was a couple years ago that I noticed this puzzling trend and I was just curious on how bad they were, but I didn't expect this. I mean look at these guys, they are freakin' horrible!

Sometimes I just have to shake my head on why a head coach of 12 years never bother in getting a top notch QB, hell his best attempt was Feeley. And if you look at the QB's in had in Chicago for seven years, none of them were better than the crap he got in Miami.

Sorry to bring up bad memories, but this is so baffling on his pathetic choices you have to ask what on earth was this man thinking and that I can't believe we wasted five years on this ******* and his clowns behind center.

He attempted to get Griese, who was a Pro Bowler 2 years before and put up pretty good numbers now in Tampa. The QB's under Wanny were either horrible because Wanny's system sucked or the QB's themselves sucked or possibly both.

Yes, he did. Wanny never actually "fired" Dan, but reports said that Dan was called into Daves office where he was told that the Dolphins were going to "go in another direction" as far as quarterback. (boy, did they ever!)
Basically, the QB was going to need to be mobile, and the Phins were going to place far less emphasis on the passing game. Dan was invited to come to camp and compete for the starting job, but that was really just lip service...Dave had already made up his mind to push Dan out, and Dan pretty much knew it.

It was almost certainly a combination of both. There certainly isn't a Peyton Manning in that group, but Wanny took average - below average QB's and made them look even worse. Handing off and passing on 3rd and long would make it difficult on any QB. It clearly wasn't a position he valued highly in his scheme.

Wanny and Pitt have a decent QB in Tyler Palko. They are going to be doing ESPN's gameday with Lee Corso and the gang Sept. 3rd against Notre Dame...that should be worth watching. Check out Dave!!!! He gone Hollywoood on us. :yell:

I can only imagine what Palko said when he heard Dave Wannstedt was going to be his new head coach.

Yeah, that's a pretty pathetic list. But remember, he's a defensive minded coach who believes in the Tony Dungy system of Defense first.. Peyton came before Tony, not the other way around, and after watching Baltimore and Tampa Bay win with mostly defense, Wanny thought he could do the same here. Didn't work obviously! I don't know about Couch, i'm not sold on him at all, i've never been impressed by the guy, but really, at the most, he's not any worse than what we have. Hopefully, in the next couple of years, we'll finally grab someone worth being excited over!

That he needed to compete for the starting job was all Dan needed to hear.

it's not a sin to punt and i think that list of qbs proves wannstedt's faith in his philosophy

Yeah, I nearly threw a beer bottle though my TV when I heard Dave say that. What kind of philosophy is that anyway.."not a sin to punt"??? Its like telling your offensive players that its OK if they screw up. Gaahhhhh! It still makes me mad when I think of that jerk and his messed up ideas destroying my Miami Dolphins.
OK, I need to go break something now. I'll be back in a few.

That's kind of interesting. My theory is that he figured you could win without having a Pro Bown QB, and built his team around it. With the Salary Cap, you're going to have to sacrifice in one area or another and, being the fool that he is, he decided that QB was unimportant enough.

Sorry man to bring up bad memories, but this has been driving me crazy for the longest time.

Dave Wannstedt. :shakeno:
