Describe a Saban type player?

I know. Ronnie Brown. That's why he drafted him number one.

1.Saban likes his running backs big, fast and powerful. During his 10 years at Michigan State, Saban always recruited physical players with a big frame. T.J. Duckett is an example. I would say that Barry Sanders is not a prototypical Saban back. I don't think Zach Thomas is a typical Saban middle linebacker either.

2.Saban wants north/south runners. He has always used a two tailback system. Even if Ricky doesn't come back, Saban will platoon the RB spot heavily.

3. There have been a couple of good threads on this site about the size increase on the Dolphins team, but it should be clear that Saban does not like body fat. He likes physical guys with big frames. He would go after Ed "Too Tall" Jones before he would go after "The Fridge" or Jerry Ball. Traylor fell into his lap at a cheap price and the Fins are desperate for help on the d-line so that is a no-brainer. Although I like him, Traylor is not the prototypical Saban lineman.

3. MIKE - (Middle backer) He likes them big. This is why I expect Thomas to be moved to WILL (weakside). He wants size and power at the point of attack. I think Crowder or Seau will be the MIKE. On the field, they will run the defense and they have to be smart. Expect to see the MIKE backer calling out the plays and slapping the left defensive tackle into place on occasion. Sometimes, the MIKE will change the front from a 4-3 to a 4-3 with an odd front by switching gap responsibilities with the left defensive tackle (the LDT moves from the 3 gap to the 0 gap). I guess some people are now calling this a 3-4 defense :shakeno:. Oh well, so be it.

4. On offense, this will be an un-Saban like year in Miami. Saban is conservative and would prefer to run it down the opposing defense's throat, but the Dolphins don't have the beef up front. Expect to see a lot of QB rollouts, quick draws, counters, traps and screen passes. Although Nick likes a smashmouth offense, he knows that he can't win that way this year.

5. Saban likes guys that are mentally tough. More than anything, he HATES to give up two big plays on defense back to back. If the opposing offense throws two 30 yard passes back to back, Saban will run down the sideline screaming at the secondary. :fire:

So the qualities are:

1. Big frame.
2. Physical.
3. Fast.
4. Smart.

Wouldn't that defy the point of having Scott Linehan?

I agree with all your statements but #4. In 5-years at LSU, Saban had really been "hands-off" on the offense letting a talented OC call the plays. I would have never called the LSU offense "conservative" until this past season... and that was due to the poor QB play. I think it would be better to say that Saban will not hold back the offense, provided the QB play can hold down the mental mistakes that can loose a game. If the QB begins throwing interceptions, then look for Saban to get more conservative. But otherwise, expect the OC to have full control and the offense to be wide open. I would expect the offense for the Dolphins to be very balanced between the pass and run. Being a defensive minded coach, Saban knows what would happen to an offense if you are a conservative or run-dominated team. You would be facing 8-men in the box and your QB would be running for his life. Don't worry about the offense being conservative. He will let his OC run the offense.

and the answer to your question is...............

nobody knows what a saban type player is so when you do hear that term just let them feel like they know what they are talking about
Just because you don't know what a Saban player is, doesn't mean that the knowledge is some great universal mystery. There are already a few posters in this thread that have hit the nail on head and you trying to paint everyone with a broad brush of ignorance, is just a reflection on your own lack of understanding, not that of anyone else..

Zach = 5'11 230

Jr = 6'3 250

:confused: by your question.

Ricky Williams and David Boston give us a good idea of the kind of qualities that Nick Saban looks for....

I think it's THE REASON he hired Linehan. If you can't consistently run the football, you need an offensive coordinator that knows how to spread the football around. That's Linehan's specialty. In truth, Saban preaches balance on offense. He would like to have a 50/50 - run/pass split.

But if you look at the offensive lineman that he brings in, generally they are more the run blocking type. At crunch time, Saban tends to be more conservative than the average coach. If it's a close game in the 4th quarter and it's 3rd and 2, Saban would rather run the ball behind a big offensive line than throw the ball.

I think that one of Saban's primary long term goals is to build an offensive line that can run the ball consistently. He loves it when the opposing defense knows what's coming, but they still can't stop it.

A Saban type player (according to this site) is any player good at his position regardless of off field problems etc. Because everyone who answered the "saban is just one man thread" felt Saban can solve any issue himself and can cure any lack of teamwork and that there will be no selfish players due to his great leadership.

In short, if you have the physical skills to play your position in his system, that is all that is needed, Saban will cure the rest himself.
