Did Young dis Marino?

Maybe I was a little delusional (sp?) sitting in the hot sun at Fawcett stadium but I could have sworn that Young tried to dis Dan in his acceptance speech. He said something about winnning the Superbowl was the best feeling in the world - much better than winning an MVP or holding all the passing records. Now that's not word for word what he said (I'm still a little dizzy from the heat) but it had that jist. I think he was pissed that sooooo many people were there for Dan and just had to get one in on him.

I dunno maybe not - but then again if Dan would have went up before Steve there probably would have been only about 43 people left in the stands.

I caught that too.

It sounds to me like Steve was just being honest and that Dan would probably agree with him. Winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate goal, and part of the reason it is so coveted is that awesome players like Dan and Barry Sanders have incredible careers but yet never get it.

You never fail, Steve would have to say that because he wasn't starting enough years to have huge stats.

Football is a team game, winning the Superbowl is the ultimate team goal, a great player stuck on a mediocre team can't do anything about it.

Dan Marino epitomizes class, the competitive spirit, was selfless in his tenure as a Dolphin and is a great father. Both his speech and his son's were near perfect as he acknowledged those around him that made his career great. Every professional should aspire to walk the same path he did. You can tell he's the most genuine person around and is truly happy.
He's a great man - that's what matters at the end of the day.

why were they so dependant on marino? becuase that's all they had, and one man can only do so much. the fact that he lead so many average/below-average teams to the playoffs is incredible enough

I'm sure he probably got sick of Marino's "ME, ME, ME" routine.

Dude, Marino deserved everything that was thrown his way yesterday. He was a class act during this celebration, and gave all the fans everything they came for! Me Me Me? What is he supposed to talk about, Tom Brady? What part of "that-part-of-the-ceremony-was-all-about-him" don't you understand.

Look, you are bitter because up until five years ago, your team was best known for pulling out a snow plow during a game, and losing a Super Bowl by 186 points. Trash talk is fine, but not today dude! :yell: :fire: :shakeno:

Oh, and Young didn't diss Marino. It was his day too, and how could he not mention the Super Bowl. Good for him!

Nah, he said that winning the super bowl was better than all the records HE set as a QB(ie.. passer rating, rushing..etc). He never made light of Dan's records. Young was a class act in that ceremony.

Agree 100%

Did any of you guys see the statues of Marino and Young? Simply amazing. Those were the best busts I've seen since Jimmy Johnson's draft days.

  I must say, that was classic. LOL

Pyper you are overlooking the extreme obvious. You are a young kid and missed Marino's career, so I'll cut you a break. But, you can't look at simple statistics when it comes to Marino's playoff records. The Dolphins never had a solid running back in his career. He was stuck with the likes of Troy Stradford, Lorenzo Hampton, and Sammie Smith to name a few. Secondly, the Dolphins defense was anemic. Bear in mind that this was in the days before free agency. So, it wasn't as easy as it is today to grab players to round out your roster. The Dolphins made some bad draft picks in the mid 80's on defense, including Eric Kumerow, Rick Graf, and Jackie Shipp. Coupled with devastating injuries to John Bosa and Hugh Green, and the defense just didn't have any infusion of the talent when the Killer B's were aging.

The bottom line is that Marino was taking teams that had no business even being in the playoffs and winning. When facing superior teams, he may have been forced to do too much.

But for you to sit there and criticize the guy as not being great just makes you look plain foolish. And not good at logical reasoning. But, you're young and don't have any idea what you're talking about, so I'll give you a pass.

 :rofl3:

It's funny to see you type that. Marino's entire legacy is built on statistical achievement. Without statistics, he's got NOTHING!!!

His playoff statistics are bad because HE PLAYED POORLY IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!

Those are just LAME EXCUSES!!! The fact that Marino himself actually believes all of that stuff just proves what at "ME, ME, ME" jackass he really is.

Besides, the Dolphins had plenty of talent. Great quarterbacks have won with less. Why don't you go click on the links I provided (counterpoints #1-3) earlier. They do a pretty good job of shooting down your theory and they do it was FACTS.

Marino got drafted by a Super Bowl participant known for its strong running game and defense. No QB has ever walked into a better situation than the one Marino did. He played 18 years in this league under two of the greatest coaches the game has ever known. Both of those coaches won mulitiple titles without Marino, yet somehow neither was good enough to win with Marino. Maybe, just maybe.........Marino wasn't good enough to win with them. Maybe just maybe, Marino's style of play was good enough to have modest success at winning in the regular season but simply wasn't effective in the playoffs. Maybe, just maybe....Marino failed to adapt his game and in doing so, he failed to elevate his game. Maybe, just maybe......The Dolphins playoff failure should rest squarely on the player entrusted to lead them. Maybe, just maybe........Marino wasn't nearly the QB you think he was.

He was a great passer. A great thrower. But as a QB, he left MUCH to be desired.

Nice verse, write it yourself. I'm embarrassed for the game of football when I read something like this. Remember the Bear's superbowl shuffle. Hasn't stood the test of time particularly well.

This Patsie fan is a loser, obviously. When he makes these logic- and fact-less arguments, it's clear he's just busting our balls. I'm sure choosing today to make these arguments was calculated just to piss us off. Let this be the last response to this brainless wonder.

LOL... you said "Dis". I also think you're overracting. I'm pretty sure Steve was just talking about the SB being the highlight of his career.

I agree. Look at it this way. If you don't hold all the passing records and aren't regarded in the same class as Elway and Marino, then the SB HAS to be the highlight of your career, what else would be?

I realize it's an unpopular opinion to have on this fine site but jouvenile and idiotic??? How so???? Please enlighten me but keep in mind, I'm not your enemy. I'm just a guy with an opposing point of view. I have an open mind though. I want to understand why you guys view Marino the way you do. I doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not following your logic. Yes football is the ultimate TEAM sport but sometimes SPECIAL players perform heroically and lift their teams to improbably victories.

Let's take a look at Marino's lone Super Bowl performance. He was 29-50 for 318 yards, with 1 TD and 2 Int's. His QB rating was in the 60's.

The Dolphins lost that game 38-16. My question is this: If instead of throwing two key interceptions, Marino had led the Dolphins to pay dirt on those two possessions.........How would that have changed the game???

My problem with Marino is NOT that he never won a Super Bowl. Winning the Super Bowl is a team effort. My biggest complaint about Marino is that he never ELEVATED his game in the big spots. The Dolphins didn't lose in the playoffs DESPITE Marino having monster games. The Dolphins lost in the playoffs, because they were so dependant on Marino and he repeatedly played poorly in the big spots.

There's a difference between losing and playing well and losing and playing poorly. Marino not only lost, he played poorly most of the time.

Like I mentioned earlier, how do you rationalize the fact that in 10 of his 18 career playoff games he threw 2 OR MORE Int's??? Oh yeah, by the way.....The Dolphins were 1-9 in those games. Big surprise.

Jealous much?:shakeno:

Simple fact... you WISH your team EVER had a QB as prolific as Marino....
