Do we need to be worried about Shelley Smith?

Now really isn't the time to get upset guys. We have plenty of time for that ... and Dolphin history has shown we are very good at that part of fandom, so we can probably afford to take some much needed rest from it during OTA's.

Nobody is ready for the season yet. Even if Smith dominated Starks every practice through the day before the season began, it would mean nothing. Everything gets reset on opening day. That's what counts. Until then let's hope everyone is progressing at a good rate.

We have a lot to learn on offense this year and it usually takes the offense 2 or 3 weeks into the regular season before they catch up anyway. By week 4, we can get a good feel for what people can do. Until then, there are just too many variables to really know whether the Lorenzo Booker types of OTA are really going to be dominant and whether the Brian Hartline type vets are really going to be in a hole from missing time in the preseason.

Well, at least that's the rationale I use to be optimistic this time of year. :)

Sent from my phone, so please forgive any typos.

Let's qualify that. You have opinions from Phins coaches, and many experts who have plyed, coached, and were GM's in the NFL. Then there are reporters and many a site, who know less than a number of posters here. Take Jaws for an example. He watches QB to an extreme on tape, and I will take his breakdown over my own. It does not mean I do not watch and have my own opinion but, I do not have the knowledge or have not broken down a QB on lots of film. So, I would defer to him on his opinion over my own.

I agree with that plenty...though I do have a problem with how adamant people are when they're just regurgitating random blurbs they've read as the sole basis of their opinion. A guy like Shelley Smith, an OL with little playing time isn't exactly getting a ton of pub, and I think it's pretty clear everyone is keying in on the PFF rating for his pass blocking and latching onto it. Going off that same source if I recall they said he was a real sleeper in FA, among other sources. Really what I'm hearing is 2 things, he sucks at pass blocking (according to PFF, result no formula) and he's a career backup and will always be a backup (by that assertion a lot of great players would've never made their mark in the NFL). So I'm hearing one source being taken as gospel and then some board members trying to form an opinion on playing time. Neither of which really tell much of the story IMO.

I wonder if it was the same PFF guy who ranked Robert Quinn the 2nd best player in the entire NFL, or the guy who had Gerald McCoy as the 4th best player in the entire NFL.

One in the same. However, they ranked their top 100 basd on individual grades given to players based on their grading system. They were not giving any opinion on "the best players in the NFL" as that would be different in taking positions into consideration, and many other things. They put up their list based on what they do.

One big factor is that this is a very different offense from Shermans'. Lazor's thing is to get the ball out really fast. Peyton Manning got the ball out last year an average of 2.8 seconds. He had Moreno blocking for him and that kept the sacks down. Tannehill now has an offense that gets the ball out much faster and like Peyton last season, he has Moreno blocking. He won't be back there patting the ball waiting to get hammered. If the o-line doesn't have to sustain blocks as long it becomes easier to protect the QB. To me a lot of the sacks last season were on Sherman's offense and Ireland's lousy picks for the o-line. Both are gone and I suspect the problem with the sacks will be gone also. I always noticed that when Tannehill drops back and gets rid of the ball in rhythm he is deadly. Rich Gannon said something to that effect last season. Roll outs, throwing in rhythm and giving him a back like Moreno will make Tannehill a much better QB. Lazor and Hickey make a big difference imo. I feel better about our offense than I have in years. I also predict that Jarvis Landry will be great. Watch some tape of this kid! He catches everything and runs polished routes. He is a great football player. He'll be a fan favorite for years!

PFF posted their grades, which is what they do, and as you say, had him as a sleeper, as well as ranked around #7-8 on FA OG's available. They never said he sucked, and if ya look at their game by game breakdown, it was a better than the overall look at him, as it gave some limited detail. I posed this to try to create some balance of an opinion.

Shelly's story is still untold. He may work out well or not.

Hope springs eternal every spring for Dolphin fans, lol.

Can we please get off Moreno being anywhere near a big upgrade in pass protect. Facts are very simple to understand. Moreno pass blocked 80 times, and gave up 1 sack, 3 QB hit. and 3 hurries. Miller pass blocke 127 times, and gave up 2 sacks, 1 QB hit, and 4 hurries. Anyone care to explain how that is any form of upgrade?

Also, Miller does NOT have bad hands. He dropped one pass all year. Moreno dropped 5 in many more throws but averaged more than Miller.

The OP clarified that he was talking about Earl Mitchell. NOT SHELLEY SMITH. while it is fun that this thread has gone on and on and on for (so far) nine pages, mostly about a player nobody inquired about, i would still like to know where the OP heard that EARL MITCHELL was getting torched, and how anyone could have rendered that opinion in non-contact, no pad, drills.

I do not get it either. You've been saying this stat since before we signed him! It's evident but somehow Moreno is seen as some huge upgrade. I do not comprehend

i don't think it's that hard to figure out. the OP thought shelley smith was a DT, and there were reports that shelley smith was getting torched.

that makes sense. i hadn't read about shelley smith getting torched either.

There is a reason those players are still Free Agents....

Also...Turner, Smith, and Thomas will be the last three standing...Wade Smith is not an option...the goal is to get better not more average....

Why not add competition?

Nope, they said is was an open discussion between PFF analysts. It wasn't just a culmination of individual performances. It was an open discussion, which involved opinions.

C'mon Southbeach! Get real. Lamar Miller is a huge liability in pass pro. So bad, that he was taken off the field in favor of Danial Thomas who couldn't start for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Ask anyone in the know and the word is Moreno is great in pass pro. Game on the line who do you want back there? Say Miller and lose cred. Simple as that.
