Does anyone have any faith Philbin will replace Wheeler or Dallas Thomas?

I have faith that Dallas Thomas will be replaced, but I think Wheeler stays because there is nobody pushing him for the starting role.

Just a little perspective here- it's preseason. Yes this is the time to see how your players do; however, the playbook is limited and not all the players are in. This is where coaches put players in situations to see how they will do so there are no surprises in the regular season. Furthermore, you base your view of said player off of only a few series you are missing with how they would put together a complete game.

Don't freak out yet- we have options to start at G and it's obvious the coaching staff is evaluating those options.

Thank you for bringing some perspective to a pretty bad thread. It was obvious at LB that the coaches were pushing buttons with their backup rookie LB's Saturday night, putting them in with the starters for a play or two at a time to see what they have talent-wise in them. And IMHO both McCain and Tripp responded well. I think we will see the same with Billy Turner getting some PT with the 1's at RG this week if he doesn't end up starting outright. The team has holes, and they are clearly working to fill them. I'm as worried as anybody about the hole at RG, and in the linebacker unit, but you'd be blind to not see that we finally are building a talented roster from 1-53.

Mccoy is best in the league.

Not really defending Thomas, but I think Satele was late helping out a few times. We all were hoping our OL would gel quickly, but I think some of us were being a little too optimistic (myself included). Polian said on his finsiders interview that these things take time and we need to be patient. He's probably right.

As for Wheeler, I probably don't know what the hell I am talking about, but he looks like crap. Our staff has been very patient with him, but I am looking to see him get the hook early if he continues to play this way against the Cowboys, Saturday.

I have no faith in Philbin to make any changes until is too late. His history with us shows no differant

Do you have some evidence to back that up? History has shown us that he wanted to cut Incognito and trade for Albert but was denied by the GM. I think Philbin outsmarted most of us on that decision.

And too late??? You realize we were 8-6 with the Bills and Jets standing in our way to 10 wins right? What kind of ****ing donkey would make changes when you're 8-6 and just off of big wins over one of the best team in football and the Steelers in their house??? So what, you think this was such a great team that 8-6 was an underachievement? You think 10-4 or something was possible with a few tweaks to the roster? So tell us, besides Matt Moore, who was riding pine that makes such a difference in the outcome? Dion Jordan? HAHHAHAHAHAHA

And consider this:
-we lost what was probably going to be our biggest weapon on offense in Keller in preseason
-we lost our second best weapon halfway through the season
-we lost our third best weapon at the worst time
-the entire draft class was essentially red shirted thanks to drafting an entire class of injured players
-we spent $100 million plus on 3 free agents that all relatively sucked
-we left $24 million sitting in the bank collecting dust. No good team does that.
-mediocre QB play. Low 80's rating generally translates to about an 8-8 record
-and if Incognito wasn't dumb enough to leave the N word on tape that whole scandal doesn't happen. Certainly Incognito doesn't get suspended

You guys act like if the coaches just push the right buttons we could be 19-0 every season. Be reasonable!!! The Seahawks GM said in one of his opening pressers that they were working off of a 4 year plan. If the great Pete Carroll with all of his accolades is afforded four years then why does our guy only get two? And our guy is ahead of where Carroll was in year 2 with the Seahawks. And our guy is completely changing philosophies on both sides of the ball.

IMO 10-6 would have been an amazing coaching job with everything considered. And it was right there for the taking with two more good performances from Tannehill. Just 2 mediocre performances probably gets us to the playoffs. And two of the worst performances of Tannehill's career gets us 8-8. Could Philbin have done some things differently to squeeze out an extra win or two? Probably. For one he could have stripped Tannehill of his power to make audibles when the game is on the line. Allowing Tannehill to do that might have cost us a win but its less of a coaching mistake and more of an investment that will hopefully pay off this year or next.

I can excuse a bad game or 2, give a guy a chance to redeem himself and work on his mistakes.
However, much to OP's point, the Fins definitely let mediocre-to-poor players linger, almost habitually.

If this is truly do-or-die for Philbin this season, he won't have a choice but to start being very active with personnel and playing time.

Who's that?

Does anyone that the decision to replace Dallas in not Benton's? Does anyone believe that the decision to replace Wheeler is not Coyle's?

I believe Philbin's philosophy on this matter is pretty simple: you compete for the position and if you win the competition you get the position.

So Benton/Lazor probably have a lot of say when hashing out who's actually winning the competition, which most definitely would not be crystal clear and open to interpretation in a lot of instances.

In the case of Wheeler, despite what a lot of people think we did have packages where Jordan was the man in the "jack" LB position. If Coyle wanted Jordan on the field more then he simply could have ran that package a lot more often. So essentially Coyle has a lot more say over who plays on his defense than Lazor has on who plays on the o-line.

And Philbin has the power to bench players mid-game, like he did with Wheeler at times and I know he benched the starting guard in the Buffalo game (which didn't make a lick of difference).

I am not sure why it matters, but I am guessing that the decision is collaborative between the position coach, the appropriate coordinator, and Philbin. I know some are worried that we won't do the right thing, but I am confident we will.

Just that some are putting things on Philbin, who they do not like, and forgetting the coaches they do like in making moves.

People who think that just aren't paying attention. Our entire organization is collaborative. Philbin won't take a sh*t without discussing it first. ;-)
