Dolphins Are A Playoff Team This Year

Does anyone notice that every year we say that we were one game away from the playoffs the previous season? It's our thing people. That's who we are. Forever 9-7

Hell we wish were were 9-7 forver. Like cam said turn that around

People are just nuts, man. How can you even pretend to know what to expect from this team? Talk to me after week 4 of the regular season. Even then you might not know. lol

I don't know how you can predict playoffs. We essentially have a brand new oline. We have no idea how they're going to come together. It looks like they'll be ok at pass blocking, but will they be able to run block? We have essentially the same WR core as last season, except 2 players are coming off of knee injuries. We have a brand new OC. Do you have any idea what our scheme is going to look like? Philbin has final say anyway so I'm doubting our O is going to look much different than it did last season.

On defense we have the same LB core. Maybe Ellerbe gets more comfortable in a 4-3 D but Wheeler is still there running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Will they finally use Jordan? Will Coyle call a better game?

No one knows. I'm not even going to predict a record with those questions against this schedule. At least not until the 3rd game of the regular season.

I think it would be fair to say we are a playoff calibre team currently, but injuries, bad luck, form etc. are impossible to predict and some teams will thrive and others will fail. Tannehill should be much better, but with the pounding he took last year will he still have the same comfort level in the pocket?

Dolphins Are A Playoff Team This Year

Many people here thought the same thing last year. We're not a playoff team until we make the playoffs.

Our biggest problem last year was the offensive line. It's been addressed and we'll have FOUR new starters on the o-line but we have no idea how well the changes will pan out nor do we know how long it will take the unit to gel. We're also going to have a brand new offensive system being put in place and we have no idea how long it will take before the key players are comfortable in that new system. We don't know if RT will be comfortable in the new system, and we don't know how much more ceiling he has.

On defense, we had difficulty stopping the run last year and I'm not sure we're going to be all that better at stopping it this year. Last year our defense was atrocious in 3rd and long situations. I don't see any great improvements in the secondary that indicate we're going to be better in that area.

Too many variables and still too many "ifs" to definitively say this is a playoff team. It would be nice to get there but with a tough schedule ahead, the playoffs are likely still out of reach.

I think this year finally marks the beginning of the Patriots' regression. The Bills, Jets and Dolphins have all narrowed the gap. I think 10-6 wins the division, but tiebreakers will be the difference as I can envision three teams in the division finishing with identical records.

People here have been saying this every year for at least a few years now. Eventually it will be true but we haven't seen any evidence of it yet. NE made it to the AFC championship game last year and they still have Tom Brady, don't they?

Most team sports are relatively simplistic in my view. If you aren't strong at home, you aren't going anywhere. In the NFL, that's duplicated by your division, if you aren't strong in your division, you aren't going anywhere.

This team split its home record 4-4 last year and was 2-4 in the division. You want Play Offs, you fix that first and foremost. You've got to beat your divisional rivals in your own stadium without question. Start right there.

Miami's home schedule.....

Pats
Chiefs
Packers
Chargers
Bills
Ravens
Vikings
Jets

You want Play Offs ? You go 6-2 at home at worst. You absolutely beat the Pats, Bills and Jets at home.

In theory, that sounds fantastic but look at that schedule. Our first four home games were Play Off teams last year and 3 of the other 4 beat us at home last season. You sort that out.

That's how you get Play Offs. Stop putting the pressure on your away trips.

Yeah our playoff hopes were effectively dashed last year when Tannehill decided to play hero but became the goat turning it over with the lead losing a home divisional game.

I don't blame his as much for the Jets loss because I believe he was hurt but you can't afford to have a single game like the Buffalo home game if you want to be a contender in the NFL.

This same basic thread/post is on every forum of every NFL team. Every. One. Of course we got better. The problem is, every team got better, which still leaves the same gulf between us and contention. If you want to argue playoffs you've got to show how we got more better than other playoff teams.

The one silver lining of the draft being later than usual this year is it's shortening the Plague of Rampant Optimism known as the post-draft offseason... that sparkling time when every draft pick is a steal, every free agent pickup fits into the offense perfectly, every young player is going to take the next step and every coach has learned from the mistakes of last year.

How many times have we heard it? How many years in a row has this thread appeared?

Could this be the year? Sure. But the statement I highlighted, with it's incredulity that anyone could think otherwise just strikes me as sad, because all too often it just means a hard rain's gonna fall.

When I was a little kid in Pa, friends and I would look at the Eagles problems at year's end, and make crazy trades with football cards to fix them. None were ever made but, it was still some fun. Then, there was the draft, where we did not know of anyone but the top pick but, everyone was gonna be good, according to coaches and the local paper.

Fast forward to recent history. I look at Dolphins needs after the season, as do many. I look at FA, who I want, who we got, and anoverall assessment, as do many. I look at the draft, who I want, who we gor, and an overall assessment, as do many.

When this is all done, I look at an overall assessment of how the team has done, and how I think they project into this year, as do many. It's all opinion and projection, and may be dead wrong but, for me, it's part of the fun of being a Phan.

I could care less if 10M other fans and/or forums are doing the same. If you ,and others, don't care to do the same, don't want to participate, and don't like it, I don't care. I do not have to compare other teams but, if you would like to, please do so. It would be a VG read.

Did our Defense get better? I really don't think so. I think we are worse in the defensive backfield. LB's still suck. D-line should be the same or maybe even worse. I think it's the opposite and the statement should be " How does anyone think the D is not worse ". Don't get me wrong I still think we will have a pretty decent D...just not as good as last years.
Is our o-line better? It better be but we will still likely have 2 rookies starting and an injury prone LT with poor back ups. I seriously doubt they will be good. I'm hoping and praying for average.
Will Tannehill improve? I think he will. The question is how much. Imo he needs to improve quite a bit or it will be time to move on. I believe he will do good enough for us to stick with him.
Can the Dolphins make the playoffs? Sure they can but is it likely? I'd say about 30% chance. Considering we are.... well.... the Dolphins and with a lot of question marks and a tough schedule. Not sure how people think we have a really good chance.
