Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan: 'I've got a lot of work to do'

i don't think that 260 lb number we got in camp last year was legit either...i think he was lighter...248 at the combine...

LOL yea not getting those picks back so we better live with it. There was a reason we moved up so cheap, we were much more enthused than any other team about him.
Hope he pans out but I think he will be an ok player at best

What makes you say we were the only one interested?!? He was projected top 5 by EVERY analyst. All this hindsight talk is bull ****!

well he could have came in heavier like many linemen and lost weight as training camp went on but u are probably right

Because we gave up very little to move up in comparism to what is usually asked.
Didn't say that some draft people didn't have him top 5 by some so called guru.
Not every guru had him top 5 and that's irrelevevant anyway.
what hindsight crap please explain. I said this when he was drafted

yes you do dion...work your rear end off this offseason to develop a counter redirect back inside move and work to get off the snap faster

I noticed the get off too. For a guy who is so athletic it takes him forever to get off the line.. You think its a reaction issue, or a technique issue in his stance. Looks like he is standing up first out of his stance not exploding foward

hes not a pass rusher so anyway you look at it he was a bad pick. hes never gonna be a dominant pass rusher and for those of you who say its too early to write him off, what high draft pick in recent memory who was a rusher did pretty much zippo his 1st year then turned it on and became a double digit sack machine?

don't have to go far. olivier vernon.

i was referring to top 10 picks who were duds their 1 st year then dominated...i cant think of one

Wel, not a good thing when even HE said, he's a pass rusher only. hey don't want im out there on running downs. Just great to use our 2nd to move up and draft a part time/project player. I guess Ireland felt he had the luxery to use 2 high picks on him.He might turn out to be a decent player but for what we use to get him, he needs to be a pro bowler. Time will tell.

Ozzy rules!!

The kid has a lot of good tools to work with going into next season. One thing that bothered me when he was called-in for pass rushing duties, that Hoops commented on quite a bit, was this:

Besides the speed rush to the outside he doesn't seem to have a counter and didn't even hint at one as the season progressed. I don't know if that was a function of his Shoulder, Lack of Power, Experience or Coaching.

I would further add it seems like most of our Pass Rushers don't have a consistent counter. If my observation is accurate then this is disturbing!

Finally scheme wise is it me or does it seem like we don't employee much "looping" on the D-line? 99% of the time Cam Wake and O.V. will be coming from the edges rarely, if ever, will you see them looping inside to a void created by the Tackles pushing to the outside.

My X's and O's members can articulate what I'm trying to say above. But, observing other teams it seems like we rarely use those kinda schemes...

It's not coaching. Kacy Rodgers is one of the best positions coaches we've had here in a long time and you can just look at the strides both Shelby and Vernon made and know it's not coaching.

This is more to do with a player that really doesn't fit the defense we run but he's here now and we have to get the most we can out of him. Coyle needs to decide if he's a linebacker or if he's a DE and let him go into the offseason knowing what he needs to work on. In either case he needs to get a lot stronger...a lot stronger.

I'm not worried about Jordan at all. I think as he plays more we'll see why he was so highly valued.

Mario Williams was the #1 overall pick in 2006 and only had 4.5 sacks, 2nd year he had 14 sacks. His poor rookie season cost Charley Casserly his job IMO.

Before the 2013 draft there hadn't been a DE taken in the top 10 since Tyson Jackson by KC...also #3 overall (and he's been a disappointment).

Yes, a lot of work to do. Like, get in a time machine and give us back our first and second round pick. So, instead of an unused edge rusher, we'd have a blocking TE or RB,..AND leverage in the Brandon Albert trade.

There are so many option with what could have been done with those 2 picks. But just at first glance, to go with the plan Ireland seemed to be going in initially...which was Tavon Austin and Brandon Albert....would have been much better for our 2013 season.

Great reference. Weena!

Anyway, the first thing Dion needs to do is make sure that shoulder is healthy. He didn't look 100% to me all year. Like all of our rookies, his injuries lingered all year. Training staff deserves a ding for that.

From a technique standpoint Jordan needs two things. The first is more functional strength and technique versus the run. And to be honest I'm not worried about this at all because Kacy Rodgers is a technique fanatic and every guy he's ever had come through his room has turned into -- at minimum -- a solid run defender.

The second is some kind of reliable inside move. Spin, rip, swim, bull rush or shed... something. Right now he's an outside move guy only and left tackles don't have to worry about getting beat if they over set. Cameron Wake had this same problem early on -- though he was helped by facing RTs most of the time -- and has developed his bull rush to great effect. I'm not sure the bull rush is going to be the one for Dion -- at least, not at first -- but he needs something. He's too easy to ride past the quarterback.

The people ready to give up on him so early are being silly, imo. He is a phenomenal athlete with excellent overall physical characteristics. Great height, arm length, speed, COD and worth ethic to go along with it. Criticize Ireland all you want -- and started a thread about desecrating his dead body -- but Tannehill, Pouncey and Jordan will all go down as being excellent players by the time they're done, imo. Odrick is above average, while Vonte was too inconsistent to rely on and Jake Long... well, what more needs to be said?

It's every other spot in the draft, as well as free agency, where Ireland poops the bed. And boy does he poop it.

I tried telling everyone it's physiologically impossible to build muscle that fast. You're limited to about 20 pounds a year as a theoretical maximum. Football players are naturally going to build less than that due to their nature of their profession. If Jordan weighed 248 at the combine there's no way he gained 12 pounds of muscle by training camp. I posted about this back in July:

Not to mention he had a bad shoulder so how would he have gained the weight without being able to lift?
