Dolphins have 'expectation of mastery' for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa

Good point, I forgot about him. God was he awful in the playoffs last year though. To me it’s no surprise the Rams won it all as soon as they got rid of him. Nice player, but nothing special.
I think he’s doing a great job leading that franchise and I think he’s good enough to win it all

Unproven theory, and he’s had his chances. He really sucked last year when they needed him most. Might just be a product of his environment but we’ll see in due time.

Even if he is successful I still say he’s an anomaly. The game is moving towards fast QBs and that’s what I want moving forward.

He can scramble a little bit, but overall he’s just so physically underwhelming, like Bryce Young for example that it’s hard to overcome at this level.

The game has changed. Speed used to be an added asset for QBs. Now days, not having speed is a liability imo.

All 5 QBs drafted in the top 12 last year were fast, that’s the direction this game is moving.

Michael penix is fast?

This is my biggest concern, as I'm sure it is everyone elses, we gotta figure out this inury thing and how to avoid it better...Tuas brain just shuts off for some reason in the game though and he ends up going full retard

Just wait til he’s dropping his head into contact week 1

If Tua could run an unofficial 4.46 like Penix, I’d do cartwheels.

There’s no way I buy he’s a sub 4.5 guy. But looks like that’s legit so I stand corrected. He’s always been such a pocket qb and with all those leg injuries I’m shocked.

Unfortunately I agree, when he came back from the concussion last year he said all the right things about being available for his team no hero ball blah blah, then he’s running headfirst for 2 extra yards and hurts himself again.

Love the warrior mentality but he’s not Josh Allen, just don’t think he can shut off the hero ball in game he’s not wired like that. Let’s hope I’m wrong and he’s sliding at the first sniff of contact
.

I believe Burrow, Mahomes, and Tua’s 40 times are pretty similar. Tua’s issue isn’t his lack of speed, it’s his inability to avoid getting hit.
it’s not all about 40 times, but general athleticism which Tua lacks. Everybody knows Pat can move well and scramble, no issues there. Burrow as I mentioned earlier is one of the few pocket passers left in the game. If Tua can pass the ball at Joe Burrows level, we’ll be fine. So far, he hasn’t been able to, especially against tough competition.

Basically Tua needs to be near perfect as a QB to overcome his lack of athleticism, height, and arm talent. It’s an uphill climb for sure but I’m rooting for him.

I think Tua has the ability to scramble when needed. Is he fast? Hell no, but might be enough to get by. He just needs to be smart about it, he's already talked about that during this OTA's, has he learned to keep himself out of danger? Who knows, I'll believe it when I see it

Agree. There are 3 types of scramblers.
Type 1 - those who can't
Type 2 - those who can get get out of trouble and get a needed 1D. TT can do that. at times it seems he's under orders to NOT scramble. He'll see open space, take a step forward and stop. His problem is, get the 1D but if a defender gets within 10yds, he won't slide.
Type 3 - JA and LJ. Yeah, I'd love to have a QB like that, just like everyone on FH. TT isn't that guy.

I think he's limited in the plays he can call. For example, Tua isn't very good at throwing to the sidelines.

Again, my point is it seems Mcd has one scheme - timing patterns. If that is true, he's inept, regardless of QB. everyone here has seen the results. Cover the windows, allow nothing deep. Mcd has yet to adjust. Yeah, I love timing patterns, but 31 other OCs adjust the scheme to the D.

We did adjust last year with the short passing game and targeting Jonnu and Achane instead of force feeding Reek and Waddle all game. After Jackson got hurt, our lack of a running game was the real issue and why we could still be defended because teams didn’t have to respect our run game at all.

The counter to a cover 2 shell is running the ball because of the light box, if we get a solid consistent running game to complement the short passing attack we installed last year then that will open up the rest of the field and we’ll start seeing the chunk plays again.

You are correct though that because of Tuas limitations the defense doesn’t have to cover the entire field, they can overload the middle and cover the timing windows we love because Tuas arm can’t threaten the sidelines consistently with deep outs etc.

A strong running game will allow us to maximize Tuas potential, he will still be limited with the throws he can make but it’s the key to unlocking this offense imo

Your post is mostly correct, but I can’t believe that people are still using the “he can’t throw a deep out” mantra. That’s been proven wrong so many times. Tua’s arm is average for an NFL QB. But he’s an NFL QB and can make all the throws needed by an NFL QB.
